Apart from the normal - make more money. Why do Hasbro now do the having the same character release in same year within different toy sizes.
It really started with Cybertron. RID, Armada & Energon having characters like Optimus Prime releeased in 2 forms but not right away. But can't remember if Cybertron Optimus came out in the 2 forms right away - so might be Movie before this started happening. But Animted does it with 3 sizes of Bulkhead.

It's all about economics, Pete. To maximise (or terrorise) your profits, you have to make sure everyone can afford your products no matter what. So, Optimus Prime needs to be available at all price points.
It's like coleslaw. Tesco's have normal coleslaw, Value coleslaw, and Finest coleslaw. So it doesn't matter what your budget is, you can always afford coleslaw.
Hasbro just want to apply that same logic to their products.

I only just noticed when just looking at past years toy ranges & now you go in shop & have 3 verison to pick from. While in past years you had to wait for another year for the smaller one.

As Graham said, common marketing ploy, you make the popular item available in several price points, that way, more get sold and hasbro keeps making us poorer.

I think Beast Machines was the first time they started really experimenting with different size classes / variations. Lots of Jetstorms and Primals at least, odd sizes, smaller versions for people who couldn't afford the big ones, etc etc

Thanks to the UK classic line the was quite a lot of of overlap wasn't there. Outside of the UK, G2 really started it with the heros versions of Prime and Megs. Then sort of again with Laser Prime and Gobot Prime.
