Well, not literally. But is there a Transformers thing (could be toy, comic, artwork, tat, whatever) that is your 'holy grail' of collecting? Or do you have a 'holy grail' that is achievable, and one that maybe isn't? For instance, I long for a Grand Maximus and with enough cash I can get one if I really want to*. But I'd also kill for original art from the DISTANT THUNDER and MAN OF IRON comic stories, but that seems highly unlikely as I've never seen art from those stories on sale, and the more time passes the greater the chance the art no longer exists**. -Ralph *Several hundred quid! **Considering it was a weekly disposable toy tie-in comic, I'm amazed as much of the art has survived as has been seen!

I have a feeling hearing that one of the artists (might have been Geoff Senior?) used all their old art to line their pet's baskets with.
Bet they're kicking themselves now!

Senior apparently gave a lot of it away, thinking it was worthless. Which I suppose it was, at the time!

Wow Man of Iron artwork would be amazing.
I no longer really have any holy grail items. Finally prying Jetfire from my cousins hands and getting Packrat and Fractyl 2 years ago were about it. I got both of them at good prices too.
I did manage to get a few Japanese toys in the last few years including Grand Max which is great but I was never really in search of them.

My holy grail at this point is centered around Soul of Chogokin. I've finally gotten General Daimos and my SOC collection has grown to an impressive...5 I think?
Anyways - while the next additions will definitely be Combattler V and Glendizer + All Spazer Set, what I'm really yearning for is good old Ideon.
Also, I have a strange desire to come into the possession of Posseidon (no relation to Transformers King Posseidon).

When I was young, the likes of Swoop and Blaster and other "US-only" Transformers were my grails.
But these days, I don't have any.

Fortress Maximus has long topped my "most wanted" list. But, I suspect that my Holy Grail, I don't yet know that it even exists. Over the last couple of years I have become increasingly interested in obtaining items that were never intended for public consumption and have acquired some unusual items: animation cels, a Transformers The Movie distributor/cinema information sheet, Hasbro/Takara internal photos, photographic transparencies, 2007 film promotional items and recent business-to-business material. I think something along those lines would be my Holy Grail.

I would say the original comic art I have managed to acquire are my favourite TF related items. If I had to get rid of everything else I would hang on to them.

The current one for me is already in my collection, a Lucky Draw Cheetor. ;D
Apart from that, I want to complete the collection with a few prototypes, and the ultimate one would be a Transtech Cheetor.

Mine is a bit esoteric. I'd quite like a Jetfire form the first Matsushiro production run one day. The distinction is probably meaningless to most folk, but it is the sort of thing that piques my interest.
Other than that, I would love to have some of the original art from the first part of the comics run. A Johnson/Baker page especially is something that I have a mild hankering for.

If I really wanted to, I could probably save for a Grand Max, Black Zarak or a Big Powered giftset, but more important things have had to take priority in recent times. I'd also really like an e-Hobby Omega Sentinel, but I don't fancy hacking off my right arm as that's probably what it would take to get it now.

It's a black and silver repaint of the Beast Machines Cheetor done for a competition for the Japanese mail order company Perfect Choice. There were somewhere in the region of 60 of them made (although the guys over at Transformers@TheMoon would have a better idea of the real number!). It's a crap toy but it fills another gap in the Cheetor collection and to be honest, I never thought I'd ever own one of the Lucky Draw toys! The moonies have a few photos up on their site here www.transformertoys.co.uk/content.php?/transformers-toys/toy-gallery/881/Beast+Wars+Returns/Perfect+Choice+Cheetas.html

Yeah. I would love to own guys like that, and could afford to, but would feel like crap for spending that much on one toy. I think for me, it is not just owning something, but knowing that I didn't pay a silly amount for it since that dilutes the pleasure.
Holy grails for me would probably be Geoff Senior artwork.

I too would have loved to get an Omega Sentinel, but finding one for less than about 200 quid these days is unlikely. Other than that...
Maybe a few more Brave toys- OOH! The red Brave Dai Atlas and Sonic Bomber! Must have all Micromaster bases! Skyhyper (Japanese white Skyhopper) would be nice too. Regular patrols of Yahoo Japan will eventually provide one I hope.
I may have a go looking for Omega Sentinel at Botcon. See if one of the US stores has any. *checks* Huh. BBTS has some for 130 quid. That's not bad- I wouldn't fancy the postage (not to mention customs) on it but I'll take one from them in the dealer room if they still have some.
I think that's about it. Looking forward to some of the ROTF toys, but there'll be plenty of time for that.

Not got any Geoff Senior artwork (yet!) but I've got quite a few pieces from a lot of the other guys - Andy Wildman, Lee Sullivan, Jeff Anderson, Guido Guidi, covering Marvel UK, Dreamwave, 3H Universe, and Panini UK and some toy box art so I'm reasonably happy on that front.
Favourite piece artwise is either last year's Bumblebee/Spiderman original postcard artwork from Simon Williams or the unused variant cover from Issue 2 of Transformers Universe by Guido Guidi.

I have about two dozen pages with a nice spread from early to late Marvel US/UK and a couple of UK covers. Plus a Wildman Infiltration cover, a page from War Within 2 and sketches by Staz and Nick Roche.
I was fortunate to pick up most of my haul a few years ago when pages were cheap as chips on ebay (compared to what most comic art goes for). Pages cost around £10-£30 then. The most I ever paid inc secure shipping from the US was £52 for a Johnson/Baker page from Warrior School. TF art pages are somewhat more expensive now!
My personal favourite is the 'Bumblebee uses his senses' page from Dinobot Hunt, personally signed by Barry Kitson.

You know, 'Tis only since I've been infulenced by The Hub, that I've started to think of original art as 'Must Haves'. Of course they are! Especially 'Man of Iron' and 'Dinobot Hunt'. They're the BEST stories ever, ain't they?!
To answer this rather excellent question, I'm gunna have to go 'toy'. I'm beginning to think that a Classics/Universe version of all/most of the 1st and 2nd wave of TFs my 'Grail' (I have in my mind a 'COMPLETE' collection list that I wont bore you with now). Which is Mad!

Karl; is the Jetfire you mean the one with the extra stickers on the wings, or am I thinking of something else? Not actually. The one with the UN Spacy insignia as stickers is actually the second Matsushiro maufactured Jetfire. The first one has the "kite" insignia painted on, and also has a "ridge" two-thirds of the way along the canopy. (There are surprisingly quite a few "Block-variants" of Jetfire out there). Karl

I don't have a holy grail, at one time it was things like original art but I've passed that on, Brave max - sold him, Diaclone magnus - again passed him on.
Sometimes it's just the thrill of tracking it down and owning it that does it. After a time you realise it's just stuff and you'll keep it if you want or move it on.

I think there is a lot of truth to that.

This is very true. My attititude these days is that if it's something I really want, but can't get straight away and later find I can now have that thing but don't feel excited about 'now I can have it'...then it was never worth getting in the first place and I move on. Whereas in the past I would have just bought the thing anyway, then felt stupid.

I know what you mean. Shockers (Marvel version) is my favourite character. I'd love an original, but it's far too pricey to find a working intact one. A re-issue would be nice, but I'm not holding my breath. But at least I have the AM version, which is nice, though I've never been able to find his handgun anywhere!

This thread is more than 12 years old. Twelve years! The children born on the day it was created are now in secondary school. Many of my holy grails continue to be obscure or expensive figures, primarily influenced by the final years of the Japanese G1 line. However, a more recent example that has been added to my grail list is Marvel crossover Ghost Rider. This was a fairly common figure on release in 2010, but only a few are currently listed on ebay US and I can't find any trace of one appearing on ebay UK during the past 6 months. Anyway, I'm resurrecting this thread with two important questions: what are your current holy grails and how has your grail list changed over time?

Excellent thread resurrection! I'm beginning to think that a Classics/Universe version of all/most of the 1st and 2nd wave of TFs my 'Grail' (I have in my mind a 'COMPLETE' collection list that I wont bore you with now). Which is Mad! Well, not so mad after all, young Shockprowl! A Shockprowl so young his second born wasn't even a twinkle! Siege, Earthrise, and the 'New Scale' have finally given me what did become my Holy Grail: the '84ers in a unified Classics/Generations style. All in the correct scale relative to eachother (in robot mode). Thought I'd got to the finish line, but the Dinobot Road and the Mini-Autobot Road in the 'New Scale' scuppered that. Almost there though.... Almost there.... Figures like the huge CW Devastator, Omega Supreme, the beautiful Earthrise Prowl... Massive Grails. So to answer the resurrection question- I think my Holy Grail has clarified itself and my Grails now are the completions the two Roads that tug at my nostalgia-gland.

The disturbing thing about collecting as much as I have in recent years is that I no longer have any sort of Grail item - I've either collected them all now, or I've just got so many toys that I'm not really that fussed about missing out on anything else.
If I had to think of anything rare and difficult to obtain that I'd really like, I'd probably have to pick Monstructor or Dinoking. But equally, if I never get them then I'll live and won't lose sleep. So not really much of a grail...

The closest I can think of to a grail would be a carded Action Master Tracks, which seems very unlikely to ever happen. I'd be happy if I could find a loose, complete one at a reasonable price.
