The BM season 2 boxed set arrived today. Once again, it's the episodes and nowt else, but for £8 you can't complain. But can anyone explain why there are Beast Wars pictures on the back of the DVD boxes? Here's hoping for a full BW DVD release... Hey, it might happen.

Ooooooh! I'll be getting this. I really enjoyed the first series, despite its reputation.

Following a certain infamous Hubday, I can never think of this series without imagining Tankor shouting "FASTAHHHHHHHHHH!" Well that and Cullen's tales of sweetcorn.

Can't wait for season/series 2 top pop through the letterbox tomorrow AM Haven't seen that since 2001 when the now-defunct Fox Kids channel aired it. Be interested to re-assess it, particularly as we've had nothing near as good since.

I picked mine up from HMV in Dublin while I was there at the weekend. Hopefully I'll get to sit in and watch a few of the episodes tomorrow night. I'm not exactly 100% happy with the series and still have reservations with how it ended, but it was much better than anything since then. Marc can correct me if I'm wrong here, but at BotCon 2005 at the voice actors panel, one of the guests said that they now refer to it as "the bad thing" which seems a lttle unfair.

All this Beast Machines nostalgia led me to watching the last few episodes of season 1 last night.
I really enjoyed it! Especially when Waspinator is re-awakened. Looking forward to seeing Season 2 sometime this week.

Okay, since my last post Beast Machines discussion has been hot hot hot!
I finished season 2 last night. Even the Missus was engaged in it! The ending was a cheese-fest of epic proportions but enjoyable. Some nice twists and turns throughout the series and i'm pretty happy with it. Now, to import the Beast Wars sets!

Looks great in 480p. If you take into account it's visually stylised, it's arguably the nicest-looking Transformers series.
The big problem I have with series one though is that it could be easily edited into six or seven much tighter episodes...

I saw the S1 Boxset and was too weak not to buy it!
Seen the first two eps and enjoyed it more than I was expecting - since I know in advance about all the contraversial bits, I can get onto enjoying the heroes on the run, meditating Primal and big explosions. Also, Rattrap being his awesome Rattrappy self and his reaction to not being able to transform.
The Maximal designs are ugly (how does robot-mode Cheetor not fall over?!) and Megatron's sudden change in motive & personality does grate though.

Egads, no! Now Nightscream's in it! Also annoyed with "The Weak Component". It's a strong episode that does a lot with Rattrap, but I find it slighty iffy that he's going to guard Megatron when the guy was that easy a target - Rattrap fights dirty. But okay, I can live with it... but Megatron keep his word? Leave it out!

I've never gotten the whole 'hating Nightscream' thing. He's not the best character ever, but he didn't grate on me as much as i was expecting.
Rattrap's robot mode though...eurgh.

Up to the Rhinox-is-Tankorr bit and while I like the bit where Optimus steps in to stop them forcibly reprogramming him... it's Rhinox. Him supporting Megatron only makes sense if his Spark actually has been corrupted by the Tankorr shell-program. (Which IIRC is the general 'fanon' explanation)
I do like the misdirection with Silverbolt-is-Thrust! when I know in advance it's Waspy. That's very interesting, that the Vehicon that fights past his Spark to save Blackarachnia and accesses his memories first is Waspinator and her One True Love is the one happily ripping her Spark out. This says interesting things about Waspinator...
And Optimus' "we must restore nature!" makes me cackle as I've read Graham's fics and "know" what nature that is...

I loved the misdirection involved with Thrust's identity and the payoff was absolutely splendid.
As I've banged on repeatedly I think the Rhinox/Tankorr thing was a good idea badly handled. His betrayal should have been the S1 cliffhanger.

His betrayal should have been the S1 cliffhanger. Andy The Thrust thing was a lot of fun and was really rather well executed. The Tankor-as-Rhinox thing was something that I thought was a really good idea, and does actually make sense to me. It feels like he has been pushed by the events of Beast Wars more and more towards the realisation that whilst there are individual maximals/predacons there is likely to be war, and that making sure that there isn't another war has "hollowed him out" psychologically. As if he has become so monomaniacally committed to that goal that he has lost sight not only of the fact that his methods have become corrupted but also of the reasons he wanted to achieve that in the first place. The whole thing with Primal wanting to "bring back nature" by destroying the technological is a plot element I really like - especially because it is obvious to the audience fairly early on that he is as fanatical and uncompromising as Megatron. Having both leaders as bad as each other in their own ways in the first half of the story is an interesting depature. I do agree that "Weak Component" is flawed in that Rattrap seems more likely to think, "Megatron is napping, I can whack him and take his stuff", but I think it just about works in the context of the episode. Megatron's behaviour I have always put down to him being just a little bit crazy. Karl

Up to ep 12 - awww, poor Waspinator! Loving Tankorr's scheming: "...driving you mad, leaving you with an empty Spark so I can take over!" Drone: "...driving you mad-" "What, no don't say that!"

Diagnostic Drone is one of my favourite parts of the show. He's like an evil Alfred the Butler, and despite not having much of a defined face or body he is wonderfully expressive. Karl

"Noble is Megatron!" is probably the most obvious twist of the entire Beast Era...

"Noble is Megatron!" is probably the most obvious twist of the entire Beast Era... It is fairly heavily telegraphed. What I do like though is the fact that most of the Maximal's are at least somewhat suspicious of Noble - with the exception of Nightscream (who has a need to form a genuine friendship with someone, anyone at this stage) and Primal (who has swung back to the "too-honourable for his own good" at this stage). Although it is a fairly heavily telegraphed development I think they got away with it because they played straight and let the audience in on it - letting us know there was something sinister about Noble with information that the characters in the show weren't entirely privy to. If they'd tried to hide it from the audience and then spring it as a "Surprise - Noble is a baddy" I don't think it would have worked so well. Karl

Megatron seems to be getting more BW-like as Season 2 goes on. Botanica's confusing me though - this prominent a character, on a Mainframe TF show, and she's not a toy nor ever expected to be? I like the character and all, but surely it would've made more sense to have her as an existing BM Maximal figure?
And I don't like the Rattrap/Botanica set-up, that's just groan-inducing. "They disliked each other - because they secretly love each other!" Bugger that (though it would bring up questions about Rattrap's true views on Dinobot and Blackarachnia...).
Thrust is brilliant.
