www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/17061It has today been announced that the King Of The Monsters is set to return to cinemas. That's right, Legendary Pictures have revealed that they plan on creating an all-new western movie based upon that legendary, historic monster from the east; GODZILLA! Now, when I first heard of this, my heart skipped a beat but was quickly put back into place by the memory of the last American attempt at the Japanese icon. That, combined with the fact that the last time a studio announced they had the rights to Godzilla, it took FOURTEEN YEARS for the film to be made. Like it was worth it. So I was more than a little 'meh' about this news. But then I got talking with a friend of mine on another forum, who is a reliable source of insider news (he knew about this months ago), and he has disclosed, unofficially, that Godzilla WILL be true in design to the original, and that he will indeed have another monster to fight. Then I started to think a bit more about it. I thought about Legendary Pictures, and the films they have put out based on other franchises. Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Watchmen. 300. and the recently announced new TMNT movie. These guys have a good track record of making an intelligent, true-to-the-original movie out of tricky subjects. My friends, I giggle at the possibilities. EDIT; After a little extra digging, I have discovered that WETA Workshop will be involved in visual effects. The Japanese Godzilla, fighting another monster, with effects at least on par with PJ's King Kong. I think I just shat myself.

Another American originated attempt at Godzilla? Hmmm. I guess we are owed an apology for the last attempt at the very least...
I'm going to reserve judgement on this, after the way the Jan De Bont version fell apart to be replaced by the mess that we got instead I am going to keep my enthusiasm in check until there is actually some proper production underway.
It would be nice to see them turn in a decent run at Gojira though, and it would be nice to see the greatest of all giant monster come out of retirement.

Can I get an 'Amen', y'all?
I agree completely, Karl. Only problem on my side is that I love Godzilla so much that I can't, try as I might, keep my excitement in check. Rest assured, as and when developments occur, i'll be letting you guys know about it. Unless someone else beats me to it.

I hope there's another Toho Godzilla on the way.
I'll certainly give this film a chance though.

My VERY reliable source has informed me that the new Godzilla movie will be officially announced before the end of the year, with an eye for a July 2012 release.

Apparently this image was released by Legendary at SDCC. I personally don't find that image too convincing. However, I did stumble on this while looking into it...

Apparently this image was released by Legendary at SDCC. Hmm, comparing the macquette and the concept art it looks like they have gone through at least one significant design revision. Not sure that the version in the concept art works for me. The head is a bit otter-ish and friendly looking. I prefer my Godzilla to look a little more angry and hostile. (the suit from GMK remains one of my favourite modern-era Goji's) Karl

Apparently that image was printed on a T-shirt with a bit of tech built in so that if you wear it and look at yourself through a webcam he shoots atomic fire and black smoke rises. I'm thinking that the image isn't so much concept art as was created by a third party developer specifically for the tee, probably based on some concept art. Can someone recomend me a decent copy of the 90s G vs King Ghidorah on DVD (or region free BD)? Jonathan's scratched mine. The versions I own are region 1 (US, released by Columbia TriStar) and 3 (Hong Kong release, Japanese lang with english subs). There is also an Austrailian version. I typically use ebay for such things.

Yeah, apparently the GI JOE, TF:ROTF and STAR TREK movie DVD's do amazing things if you plug in your webcam.
Re: the above. Nice bit of art, but that doesn't remind me of the big G.

WHaaat! I refuse to believe that technology exists! Is that on any webcam or do you need special software installed? I honestly have no idea how it works, but the tech isn't all that new anymore. I prefer my Godzilla to look a little more angry and hostile. (the suit from GMK remains one of my favourite modern-era Goji's) It certainly has a lot of lovely design cues, that one. But of the Millenium series, I think my preference is the Finaru-Goji. May not be an incredible film, but he looked proper bad ass at least. But for the record, the Ghido-Goji is by far my favourite look he's had to date.

Okay, I think I'm clear on the project history now.
For the last several years, Yoshimitsu Banno has been trying to make a 3D IMAX Godzilla film. However, he directed Godzilla Vs Hedorah back in the 70's, which is pretty much one of the most reviled movies in the series. Godzilla co-creator Ishiro Honda apparently even told Banno to his face that he had "killed Godzilla". So, yeah. Toho haven't really been very supportive of Banno's latest efforts. It doesn't help that the enemy monster which was to make it's debut was a creature called 'Deathla' and all early treatments of the script made it sound almost identical to Hedorah itself. Ultimately, Toho told Banno that they were not putting up any money for the project, but if Banno could gather funding and get the film made entirely off his own back, then they would give him permission to use the character. He has been failing for a long time now.
It sounds to me like Legendary Pictures have somehow hooked up with Banno, and he may have at the very least have been the studio's inspiration for the film. How much of his influence makes it *into* the film remains to be seen...

IDW have today released news from the NYCC that they have the rights to publish Godzilla comics, now. Oddly enough, I've been suspecting this for a while now, but I couldn't tell you why... It's very likely that they're going to do a comic which somehow ties into the new movie, but the artical makes it sound like the title will be ongoing, and will feature the western comic debut of other official Toho monsters from the franchise. I expect heavy reimaginings... splashpage.mtv.com/2010/10/08/nycc-exclusive-godzilla-comics-idw-toho/

Hmm. The possible Banno connection to the movie doesn't really fill me with confidence. It is early days yet though so I am still reserving judgement.
The news about IDW's Godzilla series caught me by surprise it is fair to say. Not because it is them, if anyone was going to go after the license they seem to be the most logical candidate. What boggles my mind is that they will have other Toho monsters in there. That means that either they have paid out a fair truck-load of cash to license them or Toho's licensing folk have finally seen reason. Will IDW's series be better or worse than the Dark Horse series? It is too early to say, but being able to have other classic daikaiju instead of having to create their own monsters may work in their favour with the fanbase at least.

Hmmm. Not having seen the film either I shall also be reserving judgement.
Mind you, just because a director is hired to make a US Godzilla film is not a guarantee that they will end up actually doing so - something Jan De Bont could confirm I'm sure.

Been a long while updating this thread, but Ken has directed me to this this morning; bkbn.net/profiles/blogs/godzilla2014designrevealfrom all the bits and pieces we've seen here and there over the last year, I'm pretty sure that this is indeed the legit design.

From what I've been hearing, while this is legit it might be a "softer" version of the design for promotion and merchandizing, and the one in the film will be a little less "friendly" looking. And apparently Legendary are asking websites to pull the image... so I guess this is really him.

Just a catching up with this thread. That design does look pretty good - it augurs well for them keeping at least something of the Big G's look and feel at the very least.
Quite looking forward to a second US run at Goji now. My confidence that they could do a decent giant monster flick has been boosted somewhat.

I keep forgetting this film exists, probably because the filmmakers are eschewing the obligatory year of hype that seems to precede this kind of thing.
