So...I wanted to get some feedback:
Now that I've sold about 70% of my TFs and will hopefully get rid of the last ones within the coming week...
What TF series should I collect?

Hm. I actually haven't had those. But I don't want them either At the moment, I'm putting all my stuff on my newly freed shelves. All the TFs are in a cardboard box waiting to be packed into their boxes and sent away - forever! Muahahah... although strangely enough, nobody has yet to buy God Ginrai, Megatron, Optimus Prime, Soundwave, Soundblaster... but hopefully they'll be taken care of soon... Anyways... I was kind of thinking of having an iconic Transformer.. See - most of the super robot anime I like has ONE main hero robot. In a FEW cases there are three or four (Getter Robo or NGE) - but never are there entire planets full of them... Usually they're a unique thing... At worse, like in Macross, they're mass produced - but it's still the same design. And this means each of the designs is unique and cool - and most importantly easy to collect (since you don't feel like you're missing something if you don't own all the inhabitants of Cybertron)... That said... I wonder what I should collect... hm... Maybe Car Robots? But that would be kind of random... no fun there... See - the problem with TFs is that despite the chaotic continuity - they actually ARE all interconnected - and once you have ONE..you're like....oh gee...I wish I had X because then I could have this nifty adventure... Hmm... So - what do you guys suggest? Maybe I should collect the movie characters? Just the on-screen ones? Problem is I think the toys suck... What should I do? Pete

Trust me, I've considered the My Little Pony Assdecker and Goblowblubloo set (they have names, but I could never remember, so I just went with those as close aproximations)... and while it looks great, especially when Assdecker dones Goblowblubloo as a cape... I just couldn't justify it to myself...yet But I want to collect something from Transformers...I just don't know what....? Pete

Poland's main products are: 1) Vodka 2) Potatos (you make vodka from them) 3) Sasuages I don't need to buy sausages. I wake up in the morning and there are sausages falling from the sky, growing on trees ... you get the picture. Pete

Vodka, Potatos ad Sausage. Sounds like all the main food groups are covered there.
As to collecting, I have long since given up any remaining sense of completism - I don't think that there is a single sub-line now where I have every toy, and I doubt that there ever will be again.
At one point I was aiming to have a complete set of Beast Machines toys, but then I realised that I really didn't like shower Curtain Megatron", and couldn't see the point in owning a toy I actively disliked.
The only way to be happy in the collecting lark is only to collect things that it makes you happy to own. If you aim to collect all of a particular sub-set of anything even if you dislike individual items just to "complete the set" you will likely end up becoming dissillusioned and resenting some of your collection.
In the end the only thing you can do is pick a sub-line that you like and collect that, and no-one else can really help to identify that because only you know which toys you like and which you don't.

Yeah...
The problem is I've already had them ALL. And apparently I didn't like ANY of them enough to keep them. I mean - I've owned every possible Transformer from every single line ever.
Except ROTF....
But those are just so icky...
Then there's another problem - there's a whole load of stuff I want BEFORE Transformers...
But I feel like I SHOULD have some Transformers...shouldn't I? And they can't be random, can they?
Life is hard.

And they can't be random, can they? I don't see why not. You could set yourself a monthly Transformers budget and just buy whatever takes your fancy each month, whether that be something from local shop shelves, an import or something that takes your eye on eBay, etc. Over time you'd build a varied collection and you wouldn't feel the need to buy particular toys for the sake of completing a set.

Some ideas:
1. Build a collection of Transformer toys which are all to scale with one another in vehicle mode, and build a model landscape (with normal cars and little people and buildings, like a model railway, only with TFs instead of trains) to display them on in various battle scenarios.
2. Have a theme with an army of multiple copies - shoals of Seacons, for example, like those appearing in Masterforce - with just a handful of Autobots to oppose them. Or an army of Sunstreakers like in the IDW comics.
3. Collect Battle Beasts. They Battle For Fun(TM), you know.

That's another problem..nothing takes my fancy...and of all the stuff out there - I've had all of it In which case the maybe the answer is don't buy any of of it? Perhaps none of them? It maybe that you have reached a point where you simply don't want to own any Transformer toys. It does happen, and nothing says that you have to own any of a particular line of mecha. After all, I've seen quite a lot of UC Gundam over the last few weeks, and mildly enjoyed some of it, but I don't have any particular desire to own any of the Mobile Suits. You've fallen out of the continuity somewhere near the centre of the Galaxy! :-) (If you bump into Misa than say "Hi" from me won't you?) Karl

Pete, I think you are a very silly boy.
But try this:
1. Sit alone, relaxed and in control of your breathing.
2. Clear your mind of toys, robots, sausages and naked ladies.
3. Then imagine someone shouting, "Look! It's a Transformer!"
4. Take note of the first Transformer that comes to mind.
5. That is the Transformer you should acquire next.

So many wonderful replies Wouldn't this inherently limit me to either Binaltech or, say...Car Robots...or the G1 84 cars which I just sold off? I had all of those and don't really want them back I like the idea though - I really would love to build some dioramas for all my stuff... Shows how much I know....I didn't even KNOW that there were multiple Sunstreakers in the IDW comics ... Seacons are out too. Seacons are G1 - I just ditched my whole G1 collection. If I got the Seacons, I'd have to get other combiners...and if I got those, I'd want Metroplex, and if I got him I'd need Ultra Magnus...and it would all start again... Like it or not...that does seem to be happening at this point in time... Of course you don't. NOBODY wants to own Gundams based on watching the show - I've never heard of ANY Gundam collectors who got into collecting Gundams by watching a Gundam show. It always works the other way around - FIRST you get a Gundam, then you watch the show. The Gundam models are just that cool. It's the models that fuel the show - not the shows that fuel the models. Most of the shows are actually sub par. Mobile Suit Gundam is probably one of the better ones. I've heard good things about Zeta too. I'm watching Turn-A-Gundam now, and it's ok - but it has horrible issues with pacing. One minute it's great...and then it sucks...and then it's great...and then it sucks...it's like a bad roller coaster ride... I know But it makes for a happy life 1. I'm alone. I'm relaxed (well, ok...I'm tired...so I feel relaxed but it might just be muscle atrophy)....I am in control of my breathing - I was at the gym today so cleared the lungs of toxins and oxyginated the blood or what have you... 2. Impossible. 3. Done. 4. Oddly enough...Binaltech Tracks. 5. But I already had him. My gripe with Binaltechs are that they are a pain in the butt to Transform. Transformers need to be quick, easy and fun to transform so that they can do battle on carpets and assorted other areas... Oh well - I tried... Maybe next year, Hasbor will come out with a new TF line and I can start fresh from there? Pete

I had all of those and don't really want them back I like the idea though - I really would love to build some dioramas for all my stuff... I don't think the '84 cars were to scale with each other at all. Ironhide and Ratchet were too small, I think, compared to, say, Sideswipe. Grapple and Inferno certainly were too small, given their vehicle modes. Not as out of scale as the Mini-Autobots, I'll grant you, whose vehicle modes suggest the following relative sizes: But the large '84 cars are all too big to have on scenery. I was thinking of smaller car TFs - possibly even World's Smallest TFs or Micromasters - and then finding some jet or helicopter TFs that were actually to the correct scale relative to them. And you'd need some normal toy cars and little human figures, all to the right scale. I mean something like this, but with lots of TFs fighting a battle on it: Or, if you've gone off TFs, do it with robots that you do like. But someone will have to do it with TFs one day! Martin

Of course you don't. NOBODY wants to own Gundams based on watching the show - I've never heard of ANY Gundam collectors who got into collecting Gundams by watching a Gundam show. So I am probably pretty much bullet-proof as far as ever finding myself wanting to own any Mobile Suits then.... (Although if they made more of the capital ships then some of those could tempt me. I'm actually fonder of those than I am of the MSs) Except.....It can't always work the other way around, because I don't own any of the models but have just finished seeing all the UC material released in the UK (not that there is a great deal of it mind you but still). Am I unknowingly ignoring the laws of Gundam Physics?
Maybe next year, Hasbor will come out with a new TF line and I can start fresh from there? Pete
There will almost certainly be a new line to tie in with their next animated series, whatever that happens to be. And I wouldn't be surprised to see Universe rematerialise under some new name as well, to fill the gap between the end of the N.E.S.T toys and the start of the line for the next film. So perhaps one of those will end up floating your boat. Karl

Well - you're definitely going about it backwards I'll give you an example. I built a Gundam SEED Force Impulse Gundam and really REALLY love it. So, naturally curious, I went ahead and tried to watch Gundam SEED. To call it gay would be an understatement. People say it's great because of the animation. I guess if "animation" is the only criteria by which we judge a story - then ok - yes. The animation is great. But the story...oh my. It's just a total rip off of Mobile Suite Gundam, only with "bigger" Gundams that now sport more guns. And it's also full of pathetic melodrama. I quickly stopped watching SEED - but I am looking forward to my next Gundam SEED model - the Astrea Blue Frame, from SEED vs. Astrea... and no, I'm NOT going to check out the SEED vs Astrea Manga for fear of what I might find there. It's just generic robot-butt-kicking. Even within UC, I really couldn't stand going beyond MSG. I watched Char's Counter Attack for example and oh how I kept looking at the time "how much longer does this go?" ... booooring. I think the problem with Gundam is that you have to really love mecha to watch it. I'm far more interested in characters and situations. Mecha are neato and nifty - but for me to watch them, there needs to be a good story. As such - I just build Gundams, but I'm not at all into the shows. Yeah... maybe ... I would like to have some kind of Transformers... but my faith in their ability to create cool things is wanning... Maybe I'm just getting old.. Then again - maybe I'm just discovering the 70s? I have plans to one day acquire Getter Poseidon - who I think is just dandy Pete
