www.newsarama.com/php/multimedia/album.php?gid=1541Hmmm. That pretty much sums up my reaction to this. The dialogue is intelligent and has complete sentences. However Spike is continuing to be a douchebag asshat with the totally unnecessary booty call random chick. Seriously, is that the only way female characters are going to exist in this one? I still can't determine whether Spike is a douche as a joke or whether they still intend him to be taken completely seriously. *shrug* Still has to make it several more issues along before I even think about maybe buying it as a trade.

Sheesh.

Hot Rod makes me laugh but I don't like his James Dean attitude, too selfish, that kid needs boundaries. I liked the way he deployed his canons Wolverine style when Brawn confronted him.
Is that Hot Spot at the bottom left of page 5?

If Hot Rod's this disgruntled, why didn't he leave before or just not come?
Don't the Autobots have a 2IC? Before, when Prime was out of the picture, someone else quickly filled in (Prowl, Jazz, Jetfire and Ultra Magnus), why not here?
Are we might to find Spike rougish and cool by taking time off to have sex, instead of thinking he's the crappest commander ever if he doesn't have his comms on when he expected an Autobot attack on his effing base?

Bafflingly, reading that has made me want to write to IDW asking for some positive female role models. I thought I'd never become one of THOSE guys!

Maybe he's not dead and Sideswipe was merely seen visiting him and then later pushing the button of a nearby vending machine to get some Skittles.

After reading through the preview, I ask, are any of the characters likable? Spike is a smarmy toad. What does he release pheromones women can't resist? Even the dog is saying, "Spike's such a dream boat", blech. Seems that the author decided it would be funny to find out why they call him Spike. Hands Up Optimus Prime is impotent and quite reckless. What leader surrenders his command surrounded by enemy combatants? He doesn't even choose a replacement. Without Prime, the Autobots crumble to indecisive squabbling children. Hot Rod's exit strategy seems strained and out of sync. Mark my words, Hot Rod and anyone who follows him are going to wish they didn't leave Earth. Predictions Eventually, the Decepticons will return with humans and Autobots joining forces for the win. Unfortunately, until that time comes, we are stuck with the Transformers equivalent of the Phantom Menace. Looking further into my magic cosmotron, I foresee 14 issues of Costa and Figueroa before a creative team change.

Agh, I doubt it. There's been a better response in general thus far. I think it's shite based on buying #1 and the preview for #2 so I'm voting with my wallet. But for folks who like this take, by all means purchase your comics, enjoy them and post your comments.
IDW lost me with AHM, the AHM 'coda' issues which managed 2/8 readable stories, the lowering of quality in spotlights post-Revelation, the error-ridden Continuum book with dreaful writing quality, areshole 'characters' like Spike and the fucking awful 'DULL SURPRISE' art style on the ongoing as no one can now emote properly. I'd rather ram Skylynx toys covered in minty chocolate sauce up my arse than pay for any more of that bollocks. I've had enough. Unless it's a Roche and/or Roberts comic or a reprint of a Marvel UK tale, I just don't care anymore. Burned too many times, IDW, burned too many times. They had my regular custom, now they have my occassional custom.
Ah. Feel better now. Carry on.

Actually, IDW is giving us an opportunity to opt out of the ongoing. Which I will be taking. The first issue of the ongoing didn't exactly impress me, and these preview pages do nothing to recapture my interest. In previous IDW works we at least got the sense that the Autobots had been fighting their war for long enough to develop some idea of what they are doing. In this issue it appears that they have no procedure in place even for determining who takes command when their commanding officer is removed from the picture (a CO who, if his personality is even vaguely similar to previous IDW stories has an unfortunate tendency to occassionally endanger his life unnecesarily). Apparently they have no chain of command to speak of, which kind of suggests that they really haven't got the hang of this warfare thing after all. Meanwhile, the lead human character has yet to demonstrate any qualities that make him either likeable (assuming that we are supposed to see him as a protagionist) or an opponent to be reckoned with (if he is supposed to be an antagonist). Going off to get laid at the moment he is expecting his troops to come under attack is not the recognised way to win the loyalty and respect of your men. Rather the opposite. (True, there are many officers in real militaries who fail to inspire confidence in their troops, sometimes catastrophically so. I'm just not sure it entirely works dramatically). It would be a bit of a missed opportunity if they don't show one of the junior officers or a senior enlisted take the initiative and sort the situation out - in the absence of a clue from their commanding officer. The ongoing has pretty much failed to gel with me. In financial terms I have to drop another comic or magazine to be able to pick it up. It therefore needs to capture my interest more than, say The Unwritten, something which it has failed to do. I am in a similar boat to Ralph. IDW had my regular custom up until the launch of All Hail Megatron, where I bailed out of the first issue as it significantly underwhelmed me. I came back for the extra issues that they bolted onto that series but of those only two half-issues were up to snuff. The rest varied from mediocre to outright stupid (The Galvatron story, where even the characters can't tell what is supposed to be going on. What hope is there for the audience?). I will be back for Last Stand of the Wreckers as a) Roche/Roberts are the only creative team working on IDW's non-movie line that have come up with anything since AHM started to interest me so far and b) the preview images and interviewage for it give me a good vibe about it. As for the ongoing, I think IDW have convinced me not to bother. Karl

Maybe we could all petition for a Verity comeback. And Jimmy. I liked him, nice headband. I would, but given how Mike seems to like portraying women in both his GI Joe work and TF so far, he'd likely either very *friendly* person her up or make her Spike's latest conquest. Spike, to me, is modeled on the various maverick GI Joe characters - in other words. If he's meant to be a spoof, Mike's not quite doing it hard enough for it to be obvious. I think we're supposed to think he's cool. I know this is a 'traditionally' boys' own property, but this sort of ultra-masculine character lead with females as nameless simpering asides is tedious. It's why I don't read most other mainstream comics. As to the rest of this preview - what is up with the whole 'Let's elect a new leader thing'? Is there not a military chain of command and protocols for handling this sort of thing? Prowl or Jazz should be doling out orders. You could still have Hot Rod getting up in their faces and being insubordinate about going AWOL, but it'd make more sense than the voting thing. And the line about how they'd all nominate themselves and then have a fist fight sounds more like a bunch of Decepticons than Autobots. I know there are splits in the faction, but it makes them look incompetent and childish. That said Hot Rod seems fairly well done here. Small compensation for the rest of it, and that's only five pages. Oh hey - when did Jetfire et al get to Earth? EDITED TO ADD: Okay, seriously, I can say fuck but not s-l-u-t? Your rude word filter is a little cockeyed.

Now that you guys have brought it up, it does seem daft that the Autobots don't seem to have any contingency plans for the loss* of Optimus Prime. *However it happens.
I think our swear filter is set so as not to offend our uniquely British sensibilities. Fucking is acceptable, just not with s-l-u-t-s.

Yeah it just does not connect to the Autobots being an organised group of military units galaxy wide, with their own field commanders and Prime in a remote location at the top of the command tree. I don't expect everything to 'fit', I'm quite relaxed with continuity and am used to changes of direction in comics, but this is just stupid. The Autobots no longer act like soldiers, but hide in a cave moaning at each other. I mean, honestly, come on! My suspension of disbelief is gone. A clever reason may be revealed later, but by then I've already stopped reading.
But nevermind! WRECKERS! Yay!

One of the TF Archive regulars has noted the hiding-among-us thing is like Infiltration. We've gone back four years!
He did seem surprised the 'bots are pretending to be real cars, asking "Is this an RID comic?". Oh god, imagine how much more awesome it'd be if it WAS. (And Prowl's actions would make more sense and Hot Rod could be Magnus! And Kelly could almost get blown up!)

What gets me about this little teaser (aside from how much I hate this Spike. Always did, now I hate him more) is that not one person has pointed out that Hot Rod is the reason they lost both Ironhide and Prime in the first place, and now it seems that some of them are actually going to be finding him inspirational? People seem to be praising how Hot Rod is handled, how he wants to get off Earth ASAP, yet it was he and his signalling Omega Supreme in AHM that put them there, and he obviously had his chance to leave when Kup et al did so yet for whatever reason chose to stay. Go back even further and compare his desire to GTFO to Escalation/Devastation/Maximum Dinobots where he refused to leave when he knew that a single solitary warrior was captive on Earth. Apparently there are now droves of incarcerated Autobots, and he himself mentioned Windcharger and Gears by name. If you took this issue and replaced Hot Rod with Huffer, it would be nigh on perfect characterization and a hell of a lot more interesting.
Regarding the chain of command, me and my brother have decided that unless the very next page of this book has Jazz laying Hot Rod out like he did to Springer and reminding him that HE'S now in charge, the book appears to be unsalvagable.

That's the problem with various writers coming onboard over the years. If they don't read what other writers have put into previous comics then their own interpretation of certain characters doesn't make a lot of sense. Schmidt proved this conclusively with Continuum.
On a side note, I wonder if Titan will ever print the Ongoing in their UK comic? With Spike canoodling around with scantily-clad women would they think that it is suitable for their target audience?

Now I want to Photoshop Huffer's face onto Hot Rod. On a side note, I wonder if Titan will ever print the Ongoing in their UK comic? You know what I hope for? Spotlight Kup, Roche's AHM 15, and Last Stand. That'd cover 13 issues!
