Do you know what just occurred to me? Using Pirranacon's (sorry, I'm using the comic's spelling) fists and any one Seacon's weapon, you could make ANY Special Team's limb a weapon. This realisation is 22 years late, granted, but that's just how slow my mind works. I never realised that either. Until now. -Ralph

Do you have the means to try it at home?
My Bruticus is now armed with Drag Strip and Breakdown. Superion's in for a shock when he gets back from the library!

I haven't got Piranacon's hands to try it. I think Special Teams marked a change in the Transformers brand, as they were the first step away from the core concept of robots in disguise and towards the gimmicks that followed annually. True, there had previously been combiners (Devastator and Reflector) but they hadn't really been treated any differently to the rest of the range. The Special Teams were the first "event" and marketed as something new and different. In the same year, of course, we also had the move away from realistic vehicles.

Okay if Soundwave is Onslaught then Scattershot would fill the Megatron or galvatron slot. I have different ideas for the cassettes.
The Audiocons Soundwave - Onslaught Overkill - Rippersnapper Laserbeak - Cutthroat Ravage - sinnertwin Frenzy or Beastbox - Blot
The Decepticons Megatron or Galvatron - Scattershot Cyclonus - Strafe Starscream plus 2 jets - three of Superions limbs
The Autobots Prime - Motormaster Mirage - Dragstrip Sideswipe/Sunstreaker - Breakdown Jazz or Bumblebee - the other two
The Protectorbots Inferno - Hotspot Prowl - Streetwise Twintwist - Nosecone Ratchet - First Aid Springer - Blades
The Oddbots Sludge - Hungrr Jetfire - the remaining superion limb Hound- Swindle Wreck Gar - Afterburner Hot Rod - Lightspeed
The leftovercons - Silverbolt Well maybe this should be jetfire Astrotrain - Blast Off Blitzwing - Brawl - Groove - Blades
The seacons just dont work as earlier characters do they. Unless the Dinobots had to go underwater for some reason. Or maybe the Insecticons.

not really know.
we've done this topic and not gone anywhere near why the planes are Autobots not Decepticons an why the Truck & Cars are Decepticons not Autobots as was the traditional dividng line in the toy range at the time.

I always thought of it as Hasbro balancing the sides. When the line launched it probably made sense to each side as distinct as possible. By 86/87 every kid knew about Autobots and Decepticons and the symbols each side wore.
From a fiction point of view once Autobots need air support and the decepticons need ground support so it makes sense for the reinforcements to fill the gaps.

Easy answer: The Autobots were short on air power and so built jets, the Decepticons were short on vehicle disguises that could blend in on Earth and so built cars.[/quote]
Actually when you think about it the division was broken before then.
The first year establishes the UAtobots as road vehicles, and the Decepticons as Planes, Cassettes and Animals.
The problem is when we come to the second year is that there are no new casettes. So no new carded Decepticon toys. Easy answer - make the Constructicons - they build things so they aught to be good guys - into Decepticons and shove something that aught to be Decepticon to the Autobot side like say ..... Dinosaurs. After all kids love Dinosaurs so they'll go for Dinosaur robots lets make them the good guys.
Or something like that.

The six-team combiners or the ones that combined in vehicle mode like Connectables?

Good point. Allow me to re-capitalise; that should clear it up: Micromaster Combiners.

Robots that each turned into half a vehicle. Completely useless unless they stay with their partner all the time. I bet they were dead envious of normal Micros.
And if your pal got killed, you were well and truly screwed.
Bizarre designs from a story perspective.

Aha no, for they could swap and change and be a million combinations! A tank-plane? You got it!
I think they missed a trick by only having connectors on one side though. We could have had huge Micromaster trains!

Can anyone remember if Connectables came out before Micromaster Combiners? I sort of half remember that they did. I assume that they were Hasbro's response to Connectables, in the same way that Micromasters were a response to Micro Machines. If the Combiners came first, I wonder how/why Hasbro came up with the idea, because they do seem to defeat the object of Micromasters a bit. "We've made all our Transformers really small - let's make them twice as big!"

I believe Connectables came first, they were definately the same timeframe. For those who have not yet witnessed the glory of Connectables, I have some pics on my site. Including the box my mum made for me! www.redshirt.co.uk/toys/collectible-connectables/

I just read your Thomas and Friend Combiner. fantastic, I can so imagine a Ringo Starr voiced train bot battling Devastator.
Also I now want to find a little Fat Controller mask for Megatron. Then more masks for others.

This week, the Wuzzles of the '90s: FUZORS.

Post by blueshift on Feb 1, 2010 17:54:04 GMT
This will probably be unpopular, but I don't actually like the Fuzors. Part of the idea is decent, as a way to make interesting new animals, but it is pretty much wasted on creatures either too baffling (injector) or that look like normal animals anyway (Bantor, Skyshadow)
Maybe it is more the wasted potential of the idea. Silverbolt is easily the best, because the winged wolf looks really iconic and mythological rather than just two things slapped together.

Silverbolt is very nice. I also really like Quickstrike, it's fantastically flexible and the animal combination is clever, imaginative and functional. Airhammer is also pretty decent.
On the whole the basics seemed to work better on most levels than the deluxes.
Oh and Buzzclaw, for some reason i forget its a fuzor, it's one of my favourite TF's ever.
The deluxes, even Silverbolt, are lacking a bit. Silverbolts basic concept saves the toy for me, but the robot mode is a bit limited.

This week: BEAST WARS BASICS (e.g. Rattrap, Razorbeast, Terrorsaur, et al.) from 1996.

Best Transformers of all time. The first full line of highly articulated figures. Effective flipchange, hidden proper weapons, detailed sculpts, whats not to love?
I am glad they dropped the flipchange after the first wave, as it did limit the variaty of transformations, but it was great fun especially for Terrorsaur. Swooping out of the sky and transforming in mid air was something I'd wanted to be able to do with every flying transformer for 10 years, but always had to stop transform and continue. So when I got Terrorsaur I thought it was great.
Rattrap, Razorbeast, Insecticon, Terrorsaur and Clawjaw are probably my favourite moulds from the full 26 years of toys, Buzzclaw too. And in Fractyl, Packrat, TM Clawjaw and Ikard four of the best repaints of all time.
It was this line that confirmed me as a supporter of smaller toys being better which I still believe even if the new movie scouts haven't excited me much there was still ejector and Scalpel.
