Yeah, this is just straight pimpin', guys! This week's installment of the Moonbase 2 podcast is an extensive and very long round-table discussion about Dreamwave comics and I thought I'd post it over here, as the Hub is big on the ol' comics. I know Ralph is an MB2 listener, but I don't know if any of the rest of you tune in, and wanted to share! moonbase2.madmooseforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=5551

I'm listening to some (SOME!).
Dreamwave beating IDW in TF-dom? You guys are taking a controversial stance! (Rereading Armada was a real pisser, I remembered it being a lot better than it was second time around)

Eeeeh, that's more the other guys' stance. I'm probably more on the side of IDW, but I don't get into it in this one (that's next week!). I rip the fuck out of Armada later on in the show, don't worry!

I rip the fuck out of Armada later on in the show, don't worry! Prime Directive getting love is a bit of a shocker - I'd almost forgotten how we all loved it at the time. That said, as time went on I started to think "wait a minute... that bit is CRAP! And so's THAT bit! And THAT bit!". Ah, aging. (Though Trailbreaker twatting Grimlock with an i-bar is nifty!)

Oh god. I've reached the guy (I can't remember names! ) saying Dreamwave beat IDW because they didn't do unfamiliar stuff, they did familiar, fan-catering stuff full of nods and re-used waves. And then I remember the raves over AHM being "proper Transformers" and think - damn. I disagree with him on a sense of what makes a good TF comic, I think IDW beats Dreamwave because it didn't do that, but from a coldly business sense he's right. Doing that turns out to sell more comics and excite a large, vocal number of fans. This is what more of the fanbase want from the comic and if IDW wants lots of money, it should do that. (But don't do Drift) EDIT: Oh wow. I've reached the bit where it's mentioned Raiz couldn't draw anime and was forced at the cost of the Armada kid's faces.

Honestly? I think just like a pretty bimbo, excellent art can cloud the mind. The art in AHM was stunning, thus people loved it. Dreamwave's art, though odd in proportions, looked, or at least felt, amazing, so people loved it.
Of course, don't underestimate the nostalgia wave of diminishing returns Dreamwave was riding on. IDWs sales numbers are perfectly consistant with where Dreamwave was when it ended (ie falling fast)

Dreamwave's art, though odd in proportions, looked, or at least felt, amazing, so people loved it. That's also true - I saw some muted reactions from AHM fans when they reached #9 and that fill-in artist who was very different to Guidi. And I was recently bemused to see someone on a non-TF site rave about Dreamwave but slag off the Marvel stuff - all the Marvel stuff - because of the 'bad art'. As in, all the art. Dang.

I've got past the War Within part, which is very interesting - and has much slagging off of Fallen Dave, always a good thing!
EDIT: And now they're slagging off Micromasters, yay!

Ah, Dreamwave. Enjoyed the first mini when it came out, though I don't think it holds up to re-reading. Only bought one issues of the Mick run as it wasn't my cup of tea. War Within is ok, nothing exceptional but has some nice bits in it. Still haven't read all of Armada/Energon.

I was actually looking through my collection of Dreamwave issues that I had accumulated through Auto Assembly and Ebay two or three years ago and it turns out I have more than what I thought. I think I am only missing about 35 issues all told (not that I'm in any hurry to get them you understand).

Only thing with the Marvel US runs did feel like the artist was just brought in to do the issue.
In the UK we had artist being given free toys - Mike Collins with his Optimus toy. So that the artisthad time to know what they are drawing. But did this happen with the US artist - or they just had the character sheets & not seeing what the toys could do unless they bought them.
But when you get to the DW artist - they [apart from PAt] know what the characters can do. Don doing fanzine's then you get EJSu from DDP.

I want to hear more angry McFeely. That's the best Transformers podcast I've heard in years.
The discussion of The Fallen's appearance in TWW Vol2 was entertaining. I had forgotten that Primus had made his one and only appearance in the DW universe to smite the non-believer. Simon Furman clearly thought it was necessary to go old testament on his ass (as the cool kids probably say nowdays).

For all its flaws, and I agree it was misconceived from start to finish, I still enjoyed the Animated Movie Adaptation. I liked the colours.

I am listening to your four hour podcast! D:
For the record, since you were wondering about licensing with Titan and IDW, Andy Schmidt told me that IDW had no idea that Titan were going to edit AHM to hell, and that it was Hasbro who gets the final sign-off on what goes in the mags. Apparently IDW sold them the rights to reprint it, and then Titan could do what they liked as long as Hasbro didn't mind.
Strange but true.

I'd like to listen to the podcasts but every one I've clicked on doesn't seem to work for me. It takes ages for my browser to load it up and when it does it can't be bothered to play it.

Right click on it and save it, then you can play it through your WMP or whatevs.

I'm 1:06 in now.
I love IDW, but I have to agree they did mess up the launch and got everyone badly confused.

Hmmm, I think I may be the only one who actually really enjoyed Armada and Energon, and especially Worlds Collide. I thought the Megatron vs. Galvatron fight was fantastic.
With the exception of the War Within stuff, most of DW was just fanwank and Pat Lee's art was terrible. I'd much rather read the IDW stuff up to and after AHM.

Listened to a bit more - I agree with the "wow, it feels like a war - if only a bit more was done".
These days, I think Scorponok's scheming should've been the big Revelation plot instead of the Dead Universe - it would've kept everything more cohesive.
