IDW reveal a Ironhide miniseries for May 2010. "During the Great War on Cybertron, one of the Autobots' fallen heroes was Optimus Prime's best friend-IRONHIDE. What does that have to do with the fate of the planet today? Find out in this all-new miniseries by TRANSFORMERS writer Mike Costa and the phenomenal Casey Coller. You didn't really think his death was just some stunt with no ramifications, did you?"

If its going to be anything like the rubbish that is the Bumblebee mini series I doubt many people here will buy it.
I notice that there is also a single-issue story coming out to explain where the Decepticons have been all this time. IDW has yet to make a single-issue thats worth reading - or indeed one that has a new story in it so I won't be waiting in eager anticipation for that one either.

Ironhide's never been one of those guys that has interested me, he's always been just 'there'. Of course, I came into Transformers after the 86 Movie, so Ironhide has always just been 'that guy who died'. He is a dead mech walking

The fact that Casey is illustrating it has some interest, but I'm not terribly into Mike's writing. I'll look at previews and see whether it's worth it.

They're giving him a mini when he's DEAD?

Choice quotes from IDW's Ironhide press releaseSan Diego, CA (February 19, 2010) - This May, fan-favorite IRONHIDE is back from the dead for his own four-issue series - or is he? Under license from Hasbro, TRANSFORMERS: IRONHIDE explores the history of OPTIMUS PRIME's best friend and the aftermath of his shocking death in TRANSFORMERS #1. "Just because he's dead, doesn't mean he's not important! This is comics, folks!" said IDW TRANSFORMERS editor Andy Schmidt. "While IRONHIDE's death is extremely important to what's happening in the ongoing TRANSFORMERS series, it turns out it's even more important to the TRANSFORMERS home world of CYBERTRON."

I would pay good money (around £2.80) to read an amusing "You've got red on you" joke in the first issue.

I'd like to know how they are going to pull this one off. Are they just going to write a four-issue back story of Ironhide or going make the four issues fit into the very tight gap in Ongoing #1 just before he died.
Or is he going to be brought back to life as an Impactor style zombie? Anything is possible I suppose from IDW's current fanwank storytelling.

Can't say this really interests me. Casey's art will be pretty darned good but the current ongoing story doesn't float my boat so I doubt this mini will be any different.

That last bit just sounds ridiculous. Does Ironhide turn out to be some super special Transformers whose life spark is essential to the salvation of Cybertron itself? Fortunately for me and my wallet, I don't care enough to buy it and find out.

As far as I can tell Ironhide's death has bugger all to do with the ongoing series so how can it be 'extremely important'? Furthermore, it also says that he is more important to Cybertron. WTF? Is he some kind of reincarnation of Primus or something?

Casey Coller has said that this will be his last interior work for the foreseeable future. He doesn't specify why, but one gets the impression that he's feeling a little burned out.

I dunno, looking at the preview this might be good.
Ironhide is probably one of my least liked Transformers, in that he is astonishingly dull and boring. If this series can change that then, well...

Hmm. Nice art and idea but the dialogue just reads really weakly.
And, I know I shouldn't judge it solely on this, but... let's roll out all the Sunbow characters again...

Yeah, he's one character who I think has more character in the live-action movies than in the old comics and cartoons, which is saying something. (The same goes for Frenzy.) Mind you, at least he has a better disguise mode for blending in than all those Porsches, Lamborghinis, Formula-1 cars, jeeps, etc. Martin

Ironhide is one of those characters I latched on to as a kid, even though he did sod all.

Hmm, wonder why Casey's dropping out? There are valid criticisms of his style, notably the boring samey backgrounds and the characters lacking a sense of motion. Otherwise, his style is very pretty to look at. I did have this on preorder after all, but my local shop has gone out of business, so now I'm back to not buying it. I'll pick it up in digital format through iTunes.

From this preview my initial reaction is: Well isn't that just so dull and pretictable. Granted, it's just a flashback and the real meat of the story is (hopefully) yet to come, but this does nothing to improve Costas standing as a writer in my eyes.
Good points: Windcharger! Someones just read his tech specs, but still, Windcharger!

Read #1 in the toilet this morning. It wasn't too bad. I am at least intrigued by the cliffhanger.

A good issue!
Aside from the over-humanising of the Autobots on ancient Cybertron, I quite enjoyed this.
And a very intriguing cliffhanger! In fact, this is the first time I've actually felt interested in Mike Costa's Transformers storyline.

Where does all of this ancient Cybertron stuff fit into the IDW-verse? Is this story the first in the IDW continuity or does it take place after some of the other stories set around this time?

Looks to me like it's set after Spotlight Blurr. I think.

I suspect that all early Cybertron stories will be told in flashbacks now. I doubt that IDW will wish to mess up the order of their precious hardcover volumes.

I was starting to wonder about that. They've just released a trade with all of the early stories (continuity wise) in it and then they release a comic series with an early back story in it. Presumably then, so as not to mess up these recent trades the Ironhide series covers parts not previously seen from other comic issues. Or has this already got a little too confusing?

Ironhide #2 gets a little weirder, but I appreciate the more psychological nature of the story. There's effective use of flashbacks, leading to another jump-out cliff hanger. The story could be tightened up a little more, however.
Art-wise, it's just as pretty as last issue with clear, crisp storytelling and rich colours.
I've got a few theories as to where this story is going, but I hope I'm wrong as I don't want "Ironhide" to be as woefully predictable as the Ongoing.
