Getting excited now, baby!
Not 'cos I think we'll win, just 'cos of the specticle of it all!
I think, best case, we'll get knocked out in the quarters by Argentina.
All this 'Beleive' stuff everywhere makes me laugh! Like when they say it on that awefull game-of-chance sho with Noel Edmonds!

I get that all of this 'England will win this year' from my father everytime there's a World Cup. Personally, I think Brazil will win it this year - England haven't got a chance! We've already had our captain bugger up his knee in first practice and Rooney being threatened with a red card if he continues to swear at the referees so what chance do we have of winning the damn World Cup!
Whenever the World Cup comes on my father always criticizes me for not supporting England (or to put it in his terms 'not being patriotic') going on to say that 'people like you have being saying that we won't win since 1966'. I quickly retaliate by saying 'yeah, and every time they've been right!' Football is easily one of this countries least successful international sports as we haven't won the World Cup since 1966. Compare that to other sports that England competes on the world stage. I'm a fan of Formula One racing and since 1966 England has had six World Champions (1968, 1976, 1992, 1996, 2008 and 2009) and if you add Scotland into that tally as well then we have another three courtesy of Jackie Stewart (1969, 1971 and 1973). It's the same with a few other sports as well. We're better at Rugby and Cricket than on the International stage (although somebody may have to clarify that for me because I'm not a fan of Cricket) although we do seem to be the laughing stock at Tennis.

English football players are just not fit enough to play international football. They spend more time advertising Hugo Boss perfume and Addidas trainers than training for the next big match! This also explains why a large number of our homegrown teams hire foreign players because our own players just can't cut it.

Can we not pollute this thread with whether Premier League players are over paid or not or other politics surrounding football and just focus on the tournament? As for England's team not being successful, just because we haven't won the trophy doesn't mean we haven't had our fair share of success. www.englandfootballonline.com/cmpwc/CmpWCTmRecTourn.htmlI have England in the work sweepstake and Portugal in another. I've also been designated as Brazil in a world cup style poker tournament I'm playing in. Concerned about the opening game vs USA, England may not pull off the win. But our qualifying form was pretty good, despite our last few performances in friendlies. Here's hoping Capello was experimenting with some things and is going to unleash something during the actual tournament.

Although I'm not a fan of football I will still watch the World Cup and watch it as a neutral and not as one of those 'England till I die' football fans.
You are though asking us to keep politics and whatever else there is out of this thread but the bottom line is that its all of those things that taint English football these days. When England last won the cup in 1966 we had on our team footballers by profession and nothing else. Todays crop of English footballers appear in adverts, appear in gossip magazines like they are some kind of TV celebrity and show off by driving fast and expensive cars all over the place and getting drunk in nightclubs. If they concentrated more on the game of football rather than advertising and showing off their wealth then maybe they would be better at playing football and maybe we'd win the cup more often.

The modern footballer trains longer harder better and live much healthier lives than footballers even 20 years ago, what they do in their spare time is entirely up to them. I doubt any of them there aren't entirely commtted and focused on the world cup.
The English players in the premier league are often the workhorses of the team, the ones that never stop running (Gerrard, Lampard, Rooney) if they don't win its wont be due to fitness, it will be technical skill, which is a failure of the countries youth set up rather than the indivdual players.
Personally I'm really looking forward to the whole event. My interest in football has really increased over the last few year so this will be the first tournement that I'll be trying to watch as many games as possible.

I think discussing the 'politics' of it all is part of the fun! Why we're not as good as so and so, why who-ever isn't in the team, why we can't come up with an English manager etc etc.
I don't really know enough about the game to say that England aren't as 'technically' good as other teams, but I suspect that that is one of the problems. We have so many non English players in our top league, our top teams have to compete obviously, ie they have to have the best players that they can get, but to only have 2 or 3 English players doesn't seem right to me. Maybe that is why were not as 'technical' as we would like to be. Then again, maybe playing with foreign stars will help our top players be more 'technical'! I do think they're overpaid and aren't as, I don't know, hardened to actualy playing as great players in the past who didn't get paid a tenth as much. Then again, football does generate huge amounts of money, so why should those that actually do it get a large chunk of that?
Anyway, we have some excellent players, no doubt about that. On paper they should be the best team in the world, or one of. So why aren't they? Or, is consistent qualification, and consistent appearances in the quarter finals a sign of one of the best teams? Shame we can't go that extra snip and do the deal. I keep thinking back to when Greece won the European Cup. How did they do that? They had a good manager, and appeared to have outstanding team spirit and togetherness from what I remember. Is that the key?

Can a mod please rename this thread to "bitching about how professional footballers have a more fun life than me" please so I can stop coming in here hoping to actually have a conversation about results and performances, thanks.

I agree. Zudo, please stop. So I got Germany and Greece in our sweepstake. This year we have booby prizes for the worst performance and most violent team so I'm actually quite pleased with both of those.

Obviously there are people here who think that I'm bitching about certain topics when I'm not. I'm not one of those 'England till I die' fans I look at the World Cup as a neutral but it seems my point of view is either ignored or badly misinterpreted by the die-hard England fans here.

No.
The thread is meant to be banter and celebration about the World Cup and the games. If you want to post about what you see is wrong in the modern game create another thread in Have Your Say and people will doubtless chip in.
Good first game, glad to see South Africa score but wish they could have held on for the win.

Listened on 5Live. Sounded like they came alive in the second half despite being dire in the first. Looking forward to highlights and France vs Uruguay late tonight! In the pub all day tomorrow building up to England vs USA. Trying to get my American friend down to watch it with us

Yes the horns are tedious. Andy My dentist had the game on in his surgery this afternoon. I couldn't see it (and don't really _get_ football anyway so wouldn't actually have paid much attention if I did) but I could hear the droning of those horns. It sounded like an insect plague of Old Testament proportions. Karl

Great fun the world cup and a good game yesterday between South Africa and Mexico. France game was pretty poor. Looked like Le cheating gits might lose at one point but following the sending off I'm just glad they didn't win. England game will be a radio job for me today.

I'll be doing my best to catch some of it at work, but I doubt that'll happen. Andy Even my workmates who hate football are going on and on about the World Cup. I honestly don't understand it at all I guess it stems from when I was little. My dad is a huge Spurs fan, so every time football was on my mum would tell me to keep out of my dad's way, since he would be in a bad mood when they inevitably lost. So I've always associated football with that!

Well that was rather underwhelming. From the radio coverage it sounded like the game could have gone either way - though due to poor play. Watched the brief highlights on the BBC website this morning and YIKES that was quite a horrific goalkeeping error.

The game was indeed pretty poor, though on the balance I would have to say that England deserved to win. Robert Green's error was a bit shocking but not a patch on the Algerian keeper today - now that was atrocious.

Managed to see the England game whilst at work, amazingly enough. Got a job just as the final whistle blew!
England looked good at numerous moments, just couldn't quite finish off what they started. Considering we "always start slow" there's hope there. I liked Lennon and Johnson going forwards on the right. Gerrard and Lampard looked good. And what an excellent game Heskey had, holding things up, just a shame he was caught offside a million times. I'm a bit concerned about the defense, not enough pace in the middle there, showed last night. Should've beaten America, even though thet played very well, but a draw isn't a disaster.
Green's mistake was terrible, suppose that's the problem with being a goalkeeper. An out-feilder's mistake alot of the time can be covered up by the nine other outfeild players, but when a keeper makes a mistake it often means a goal.
Argentina looked like they had similar troubles. Lots of attack, but couldn't finish things off. If they, especially Messi, get it together I can see them winning it.
Fill me in on the France cheating story someone. Something about hand ball?

If Ireland beat France they'd have qualified. France needed a draw and Henry hand balls to control a cross, passes in front of the goal and they score.
As for England game... Johnson and Lennon down the right was sweet, if they can just get the crosses a little better, that side is going to be dangerous. Lampard or Gerrard need to be a little more aware of what's going on behind, I wonder if Ferdinand used to shout out if one of them needs to drop back? Sean Wright-Phillips needs to stop thinking he can dribble past 20 players and be more aware of his options.
And now time to reveal my deep-dark-secret. My mother was German. And as such...
[shadow=red,left,300][glow=red,2,300]4 - 0 BABY YEAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!![/glow][/shadow]
They looked so dangerous going forwards, Aussies did put the defence to the test a few times, but all in all, an organised and attacking German team that's going to ace their group. Let's hope England win our group otherwise will face Germany in the last 16 which we really don't want.

The fiend Henry!!!
Great competition so far. Loving it. Mrs Shockers is a quarter German, so even though she HATES football, her (and her brother who is amazingly enough also a quarter German) were pleased with the German result. Have to say, they did look fantastic, best team so far. They're such a great 'team'. Couldn't beleive Spain loosing to Switzerland! Shame the South Africans looked like going out. Still, you never know, with France not playing too well, they may just cause an upset!
