Spinning out from the Robin Hood thread...we've been chatting about longer/alternate cuts of films. Do they interest people? Or is it threatrical cuts all the way?

I myself prefer a film that averages around the 90 minute mark. A two hour film is also good but any longer than that and I tend to lose interest in what is happening in the film regardless of whether it has an excellent plot.

If I'm really enjoying a film I don't want it to end. I remember watching 'The Dark Knight' in the cinema and thinking it was finished when the Joker got captured, as it was already a decent length by that point. But it hadn't! It had _loads_ to go. Dear God, imagine how much poorer it would have been if the studio had looked at its 2.5 hour runtime and demanded it be cut down to under 2 hours. I suppose we'd have had to wait for the director's cut. Martin

Director's cuts all the way. I like to watch movies the way the artists intended them to be, not the way studio executives have made them due to wanting more showings and revenue in cinemas. Although you could argue that part of the skill a director and editor has is the ability to fit the story within the limitations set. So err, yeah.
Something to consider is Aliens - the revelation that Ripley had a daughter who had grown up and died in her absence whilst in hypersleep explains more why she forms such a bond with Newt, which was previously assumed to be a simple maternal instinct, we now realised it went a lot deeper. The use of the auto-sentry guns helps build suspense during the mid-part of the film, although some will say that it dragged on a little long.

Re: The Dark Knight.
I kind of lost interest with all the ferry stuff. But loved the hospital scene.
