Fun issue, but for a "Spotlight Arcee" the gal herself doesn't seem to be the true focus - Decepticons VS Garrus-9 and subplot furthering seem the name of the game here. Which is a pity - there should've been more development of her origin and trauma to fully sell the idea of psycho-Arcee.
Lots of fun violence, and much more coherent and interesting than Megatron Origin. Whether this is Milne improving or a script designed more for him, I like it.

Perhaps, I suspect, Karl is in league with Jhiaxus to unneccessarily impose gender on the Transformers race?! Fiend! Ah, who knows who I am secretly in league with. Life is a twisting laybyrinth of shifting alliegances, sometimes I lose track myself. Karl

I thought it was pretty decent stuff, only let down by some muddy printing/colouring on some pages.

Finally arrived today.
I enjoyed it, easily Alex Milne's best story to date. The pacing and layout were much stronger. The colour was a little muddy in places but not too bad overall.
An interesting set-up and obviously means chances are Arcee will be cropping up in the next mini.

Spoilers, in case any folkes ain't read it yet.
I thought it was ok, a good read, good scrap. Alot was happening though, as though Furman tried to cram too much into it. Arcee's character was ok, but I agree with Karl in that I'm not sure about the birth of Arcee's gender. Didn't seem to sit right- not sure yet though. Art was good, but dark in places. I actually disagree with Fort Max being in charge of the prison. Doesn't seem to fit his personality. I think he deserved his own Spotlight some time, and maybe it should have been Red Alert in charge of the prison.
So, the prisoners. Ransack I understand being there. Wonder what Longtooth's done? Repugnus was an Autobot monsterbot wasn't he? Was he the thief? What's left of Bludgeon is locked up I see. Who's Skyjack?
Characters seen in this ep: Seemed to be lots of Action Masters, which was great. Kick Off, looked like, what's his name, Gutcruncher? Maybe Jackoff and Rad in there also.
Mayhems. So is Banzaitron the leader of the Mayhem Attack Squad? Was that the actual Mayhem Attack Squad? He reffered to his outfit as Secret Service. So Onslaught and 3 of the other Combaticons are under Banzaitron's command. Obv Swindle hasn't joined the Combaticons yet, which was a good detail to put in there.

Spoilers, in case any folkes ain't read it yet. I'd disagre with you there I fear. I thought that what we saw of Fortress Maximus in the issue did fit him being in charge of a prison. Mind you, we don't have much to go on given that this is the first time this character has appeared, and few scenes in one issue isn't much information on which to assess their personality. No way to tell really. But the name is of a existing toy:- www.tfu.info/1995/Decepticon/Skyjack/skyjack.htmActually I read that more of a statement that he had a secret service - which is something that every would-be absolute ruler should definitely have (and every constitutional monarch or elected ruler for that matter). As to a Mayhem Attack Squad - I think I may have blinked and missed it, but I don't recall that term being used. Am I suffering from memory failure this morning? Karl

No no, you're not loosing your marbles! Not yet anyway! Coupla others mentioned the Mayhem Attack Squad. All that's in the comic is Banzaitron says something like "let the mayhem begin". I don't think it is the actual M.A.S. thinking about it.
Fort Max- oh yeah what we saw of him was good, but I just think it was a case of too large a character in too small a role. I've always seen him as a scholar as well as a warrior, and feel him 'just' begin in charge of a prison not really fitting in with his standing. Red Alert would have been much better, IMHO of course!

Ian I can see where you are coming from Ian. However, I don't find previous depictions in other sources a good guide to what these characters will be like in the IDW comics. Look at Thunderwing for example - rather than the hard-as-nails combat-monster with an obsession about the Creation Matrix that he was in the Marvel comic the IDW version was a) in flashback a drive scientist with a bit of a survivalist mentality and little or no ethical restraint and b) posthumously a giant zombie monster. Optimus Prime in the IDW universe is a distinctly different character to the Marvel version - much more proactive and less prone to over-analysing his past decisions. I tend to treat each IDW version of a character as a blank slate - I form my impression of their personality from what they show me as we go along. But that's just the way my brain is wired. Karl

I agree with Karl on this one. The IDW versions of characters can be quite different from the original Marvel ones, as ably demonstrated by Thunderwing, Arcee, Omega Supreme and Galvatron to name a few.
Regarding the issue itself, spoilers folllow...
As is known by a few folks round these parts, I'm quite a fan of Arcee, although I agree that (the Beast-era DNA-scanning semi-organics notwithstanding) gender's a tricky issue for Transformers. Having said that, gender only seems to be a notable issue if we are talking about female robots. The other Transformers are equally gender-based, it's just that they're male (use male pronouns, male voices in film and tv media, etc) and no-one ever seems to say "why would robots be male?" instead of "Why would robots be female?". Then again, if they all used "it" as a pronoun and spoke in genderless flat voices it'd all seem a bit less exciting.
I agree that Arcee wasn't in her own Spotlight too much, but as long as the suggestion that she'll be popping up in the next miniseries comes to fruition I don't mind. I wonder why Jhiaxus tried to introduce a "female" aspect to the Transformers. Perhaps he is creating an IDW-verse version of G2's biomorphic reproduction and a side effect of these experiments is that those Transformers with a reproductive spark will be considered "female"? Perhaps he studied the likes of female black widow spiders or praying mantises and thought here was a particularly vicious and powerful subset within some organic species and he could replicate it to make more vicious warriors? I don't know, and even though we'll be seeing Jhiaxus and (I hope) Arcee again, I don't know if we'll ever find out...
