Got the 5th Doc with TARDIS and UNIT 1975 sets for Christmas. Opened the latter so far. Scottish Tom is quite nice. He can't move his head much but the deco is very nice. Benton is fine and 'UNIT Soldier' is so obviously the Dirty Stinking Traitor with an added moustache it's hilarious.
The UNIT soldier is funny. It must have been cheaper just to keep the same head on the production line than change it for something like a random old Primeval head repainted. But the idea of Mike Yates international espionage agent in disguise is most amusing.
I'm not sure about that Tom head. I saw the renders, I know it's super accurate, but the paint job seems very heavy. Like he's wearing overdone theatrical makeup.
Love the line though. I think a new year project will have to be to properly categorise the figures to show which stories have accurate figures. Also to get them all out to properly compare them to note exactly which parts the figures are made from, particularly the Daleks.
Happenings at the Castlemilk B&M of Wonders! Having gone there for essentials (of course) I went and looked to see if they had any Who stuff in, and was quite surprised to find a whole load of things reduced. Of probable interest (from what I recalled from previous discussions) was:
- Coal Hill School Ace and Dalek 2-Pack - £12.99 - 2nd Doctor and TARDIS - £12.99 - History of the Daleks #1 (Dalek 2-Pack) - £12.99 - The Witch's Familiar (12th Doctor and Davros) - £12.99
If anyone's after any of that then let me know - I am sure to be headed back that way for essentials in the near future.
B&M Hyde had the 2nd version of the Sarah and Romanas 3-pack and The Witch's Familar set so the Chrimbo gift card was finally deployed for them. Ashton B&M remains a DW-free zone so I have missed the Coal Hill Ace/Dalek and History of Daleks #3 and #4. Never saw them! Och well.
It's a barmy looking list, but this time last year the prospect of Sarah, Romana I & II, Benton and Yates would have seemed a pipedream. The Dalek set looks odd because of the history sets; doesn't fit. And if they're following last year's pattern your have thought the Hartnell sets would follow each other with a minor change and repaints, not be in the same wave. Some first Doctor companions would be amazing though. As would Tegan if she links Earthshock and the Five Doctors with that set having a first doc with Hurndall head.
Apparently leaked list of upcoming B&M sets being discussed on GB:
July 2021; 370537 The Keys Of Marinus 370538 The Sensorites. 370539 3 Pack Power/Day Of The Daleks.
October 2021; 374864 Earthshock. 374867 The Five Doctors. 374868 Evil/Planet Of The Daleks. 374869 TARDIS & 1st Doctor.
December 2021 374862 Doctor Who & Giant Robot
Rumours continue apace on GB that these are real and that the first wave is due August 6th. The Earthshock set is a CO online exclusive like the Mechanus one last year. No news yet what the figures in the sets are, bearing in mind that B&M sets are a new head on existing parts or a new soft plastic wrap for the torso like Romana I and the UNIT soldiers had in their second issues last year to alter a costume. No completely new figures.
Looking at it, that new wrap they did for Romana I in the second set last year is a close match for Susan's top in the Keys of Marinus. There could be an outside chance one of the sixties Cybermen moulds with a new head would do a Voord. Then an easy first Doctor reissue for cheapness? Then you'd hope the Sensorites set had Ian and Barbara in it.
It's a shame the Dalek history sets now seem to be three packs instead of keeping to a pair of Daleks per story. So we can probably guess the first one will be a Power drone, probably with a scoop, a grey Day drone and gold. Then the other one will be an Evil black dome Dalek with the Planet drone and Supreme. All of those have been out before, multiple times, so will probably have a very slight tone difference in the colour like the first four history sets.
