Issue #80.5 has extra layers for readers in the UK.
For example, why has Optimus Prime chosen to mentor Hot Rod and why does Kup call him the Chosen One? Well, Optimus Prime met the Rodimus Prime from a possible future in 1989 at the end of 'Time Wars'.
Also, Ultra Magnus and Kup being pals is significant. The present-day version of Ultra Magnus never met Kup in the classic Marvel comics, but he did meet Kup from the future twice. Now their present-day versions have become acquainted, presumably Magnus has told Kup all about the Kup he met in 'Target: 2006' and 'Fire on High'. (He has no reason not to - it is now clear that the future in question didn't come to pass.)
Another nod to the UK comic... communicubes!
After the entire creative team kindly signed more than 200 copies of #80.5 for UK fans at the launch event in London yesterday, I refuse to believe that Furman & co. won't be catering for readers of the UK run who were never educated in the distinction between US- and UK-originated material, when putting RG1 together, as well as catering for US-only readers.
PS Square speech balloons with sparky corners? Check. Sound effects? Check. Thought balloons? Hopefully appearing in #81... Up until issue #80 I could read Optimus' thoughts! Give me back my mind-reading powers!

Thought balloons are a bit out of favour in modern comics full stop.

Though let us take a moment to note that as of today, the Marvel run is back to being a current ongoing series again and not an artefact purely of the past. That is a good thing. -Ralph I'm actually choosing not to read it as THE continuation but rather A continuation, one of several possible realities post-80. (Generation 2 being the main other reality.) I'm not reading it as the definitive conclusion, though that seems to be the creators' intention.

I'm actually choosing not to read it as THE continuation but rather A continuation, one of several possible realities post-80. I would say that's not really a choice on your part but a fact. This can't be THE continuation when there are already two existing ones out there (written by the same author and both intended at the time to be definitive!). The original one - and in my opinion, the best of the two so far, and the one with the greatest authority, as it was plugged in issue #80 and published within the original continuous run, albeit only in the UK - is 'Another Time and Place', not G2. When issue #100 comes, we'll all have a view on which one of the three is best and which universe we prefer. If everyone dies, or if the UK stories are seriously contradicted, or if there's too much shoehorning of post-Marvel concepts such as sparks, I'll be sticking with ATAP. But it'll be a fun read in any case. I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy it much more than I did G2. Martin

To the detriment of modern comics, I say. Martin I agree. They are one of the core tools writers have in comics. Far too many modern comics are written as if they are movie/tv storyboards/stills. -Ralph

Never cared for ATAP myself. Always felt like one of the very minor quality Annual tales. I have never understood the love for it, to be perfectly honest. I just don't get it.
And I am a Doctor Who fan, with it's many continuations so will have no trouble having all 3 'conclusions' of the Marvel run fit together in my head as one big thing.

Fans also have the option of taking issue #80 as the end, which is quite nice as the series began with Optimus Prime saying farewell to Prowl as he sent the Ark crashing to Earth, and ended with him telling Prowl that after all the fighting they could finally go home to a Cybertron restored. A happy ending!
The Prime/Prowl scenes and the inner thoughts of characters (which would require thought balloons in a comic) were what I find memorable and like most about ATAP. The final battle scene was less special. I might have left out the framing segments and the reference to a new war in the horizon. Again, I like a happy ending for the good guys. Prowl being right, and then Prime and Grimlock putting Megatron down for good - that's as good a way to end as any I can think of.
But if Furman has twenty issues of fresh new ideas to give us, let's see them!

I felt we had already had a proper ending with 'Peace'. Yes, it's a tad GrimDark and not how I would like the series to end in terms of how things turn out for the Autobots but it felt like a natural logical end to a series about robots who have been killing each other for millions of years. It made a strong impression on young Ralph about how stories can end.

But if Furman has twenty issues of fresh new ideas to give us, let's see them! That's something I'm quite intrigued about and will be asking the Furmanator about at AA (if I remember). When he and Wildman were discussing the idea before it was given the go-ahead, it was in terms of a six-issue (or so) mini-series. I'm interested to know how much of the twenty issues is the ideas for the mini-series being expanded and how much is entirely new in light of having a larger run.

Not sure if its a misprint but the indica gives this series the (slightly) less rubbish name of 'The Transformers: Regeneration'.
The issue itself was OK, about as good as could be expected for a reduced page count, recap/introduction thingamajig. It hasn't killed my interest in #81 and I'm looking forward to seeing where the series goes, so I guess it did its job.
Good looking issue but I hate the pasted on faction symbols.

Quite enjoyed #80.5, good use of a limited number of pages and a surprise twist at the end.
Still confused as to who human blokey on the the first page of recap is...?

Not sure if its a misprint but the indica gives this series the (slightly) less rubbish name of 'The Transformers: Regeneration'. The indicia for TF IDW issues have been doing that since they launched in 2005. Though technically in this instance it is incorrect for by the time it had ended Marvel's 'The Transformers' had shorted its title to 'Transformers' so for this to follow on it should not have the 'the'. I imagine I will be the only person on Earth enraged by the indicia in #80.5! Such is my way. -Ralph

Been sitting and re-reading this now that my copy has arrived. Something I haven't pontificated about yet is the colours. They are very clever - Bove has managed to square the circle between giving us a colour pallete that resembles that of the closing era of the Marvel run but executed with modern colouring techniques. It is a clever trick, to come up with something to satisfy both the old-timers like myself and the newer audience who have less exposure to older comics technology.
(I've already pontificated on the StarDub Special about the issues virtues as a "jumping on point" I shan't bore everyone by repeating said pontification here)

Just got my 2 copies just now - had flick in them & noticed sprayed on walls no matrix & Unicron symbols - so could we see the faction from #us74? Don't know if anyone has stated this before. page 4 panel 5.

The latest issue of Scifi Now contains a feature on Transformers, covering the comic, TV series, and movies. I was only able to have a quick glance this morning, but it appears to contain a short interview with Andrew Wildman on the Regeneration comic.
Edit: It's a good read, but is obviously written as an introduction to the Transformers comic world, rather than something for existing fans. The majority of the quotes appear to have been lifted from other sources. Still, it's decent coverage and the rest of the mag is infinitely better than SFX (we don't know how to review Transformers DVDs) magazine.

Gits. I went into their Croydon store on Free Comic Day and they didn't have any copies on the shelves (leading me to the always super helpful Steve Bax)...

They did have them on the day; I had mine from there (online) and they sold out, so they must have got more from somewhere.
