Has to be said, that was one of THE best movie posters ever, the one used for the cover of the mag eh? Liked how they had multiples of the characters on it. I've wondered who that robot is flying by Primes leg....
The movie poster is much better than the one used in the USA....

That mag is one of my TF Holy Grails. I've long sought after a repro of the UK Movie poster, ever since the one I had as a kid perished. My amazing missus recently tracked down an original cinema foyer poster, complete with credits (and creases) and it now hangs majestically in our living room. I felt a genuine sense of closure when I got that one. Nice.
BUT...who is responsible for this piece of artwork? It must be a UK artist, working off stills etc, because as far as I'm aware this startling image (how can a shot be so effective even with its hero's back to the viewer?) wasn't used to promote The Movie in other territories. But there are a few techniques in the pic vaguely reminiscent of Cam Kennedy. Could it be he, sticking rigidly to his source material, but using some of his own tricks of the trade?
Or maybe I was just re-visiting Dark Empire the week this got delivered...
Still, an absolute treasure, you utter magnificence.

There are a few bits that do remind me of Cam Kennedy, but there is a sharpness of line that is missing so I don't think it is him. I fijd myself thinking it might be the chap who painted the Insecticon centric Marvel storybook.

I've tweaked the formatting of the first post so the rest of the page reads OK.

An amazing find, Andy!
Interesting to see Sheila Cranna as editor of it. Was Ian Rimmer editor of the weekly title at that point?
I remember getting the actual poster in Jolly Giant in Glasgow in 1987. Sadly, that's long gone now.

I was reading an issue of Marvel UK Secrets Wars last night which had an advert for this poster mag and I was wondering what it looked like as I've never seen it before.
I log on to the Hub, and Andy answers my question before I even ask it, thanks Andy!

Heh!
I only ever saw the cover in a local newsagent and never saw the interiors until yestetday when it arrived. Like Nick, it has been something of a holy grail in terms of comics.

I was never too fussed about this to be honest. I gave away (or sold cheaply - can't remember) my copy a few years back. Didn't realise it was so sought after.

Like most things to to with the Movie (excepting the Marvel Adaptation) this is something I don't think was particularly available where I was back in the day. It is something I only really know about because of fandom, and not something I have seen many examples of "in the wild" even so. A very nice find indeed Andy.
I'd agree that it probably isn't Cam Kennedy, but more because of a subjective sense that although it does seem to be very like his style it just doesn't quite feel right if you see what I mean.

Thankgoodness I am currently off the ale or there would be danger there.
I had the poster mag back in the day and it hung majestically on my bedroom wall. It's long since lost. I am very nostaglic about it (same goes for the marvel adaptation special and the Ladybird book and cassette).
A few years back I lucked on one in a mixed lot in amazing condition. Alas, that was lost during a house move.

Thinking about the poster made me remember seeing it way back in 1986....My Dad took me to the local Odeon in Reading...I'm sure it was a mild day even though it came out before Xmas...
My Dad bought me a small pot of vanilla ice cream, it had Rasberry swirls in it. I remember before the film started they showed all of Madonna's videos up to her then Material Girl...I just wanted to see the film! I was amazed by it and remember as a child being totally on the 'goodies' side - I was sad seeing Lithone being destroyed, sadder when Prime died - but what child wasn't?!
My Dad wasn't fussed....He probably thought it was a load of bollox lol....We sat in 'the smoking' side of the cinema, odd that cinemas thought if you sat in non smoking you could avoid the fag smoke when it would rise and waft over...I didn't really like any of the new characters as a kid, I did like Wreck Gar and thought he was Chinese with that tache and beard and thought Galvatron was fat.....I remember the ending and the narrator saying Prime would return and I was really excited telling my Dad as we got up to leave.
My final memory of the film as a kid was that I was sure the head of Unicron froze on the screen large instead of flying towards the distant curve of Cybertron as on the dvd as the credits rolled....Maybe we were getting up and leaving as that happened but I'm certain of it.
Much better than Bay's tripe any day....
What are your memories of seeing it at the cinema and who did you go with?

I bought the poster mag off eBay a while back. Another interesting item I've got, which I'm pretty sure uses the same art, though printed monochromatically in shades of yellow/orange, is the information/marketing sheet that the distributor sent to cinemas. It's a four page (folded A3) document with a synopsis and other information. Unfortunately, the eBay seller I bought it from didn't pack it very well so the edges are creased - he sandwiched it between two annuals when it was larger than the books and the edges overhung them.
I like things like that, things that weren't intended for public consumption. They give an interesting insight into the business side of Transformers.

I remember picking this up at Ephgrave's newsagent and being shocked at the whopping 99p cover price. I still have it, but alas, it bears the scars of a hundred drawing pins and bits of Sellotape.

And much as I love the artwork, I always thought it odd that we get a lovely detailed shot of Prime's... back.

I know all the images are directly from the animated cells but can't quite place that Unicron one...it is brilliant though.

Ha! One of the first things to spring to mind for me upon this thread was 'wow, I bet 99p was actually quite expensive then...' I've always wondered if the Prime's back image was because it was based on some kind of classic fight picture from centuries ago. Don't think it is though. As much as I love the UK poster, I kind of prefer the Japanese one now. The US one though is absoluete bobbins and I'd go as far as to say it might have contributed to its poor box office in the US.

My mum wouldn't let me get it at the time because it was 99p. ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png) The poster magazine was probably roughly 3 times more expensive than the weekly comic, which I guess cost about 30p at the time. The current UK Transformers comic costs £2.99, I think, so the equivalent would be a DOTM poster mag costing £9!

You're not far off!
99p in 1987 is the equivalent of about £2.20 today.

The wacky world of comicbook publishing pays no heed to the rate of inflation. There was an article a year or so ago that said if you take the early Marvel comics like Spider-Man or the X-Men which were, say, 12 cents an issue in the 1960s, today they should be about $1.75 but they're much more likely to be $3.99!
