I just heard about this from Simon Williams' FB. As I said there, I was concerned about the axe falling on Marvel Studios; I didn't see this coming.
The irony is that this could prevent Disney's own core market getting into Marvel; it was because of the catalogue of characters that Disney bought Marvel in the first place.

It makes the Death's Head return seem something of a final goodbye, doesn't it?

This would leave the only continuing newly published legacy of Marvel UK originated material being the comic strip in Doctor Who Magazine (it having itself originated as a Marvel title).

This is a crying shame. I mean, I wasn't buying much of the Marvel UK stuff - it wasn't really aimed at me - but I appreciated the fact that it existed and it was available to, suitable for and accessible for kids of the age I was when I first started getting into comics.
It seems like a rather foolish move in all honesty, but I have long since given up trying to comprehend the ways of Disney.

It might seem foolish but, as linked above, there's history between Disney and Panini ...... You can draw some lines and see where this might go.

Panini's license will not be renewed by the looks of things. Which is daft, as Marvel currently do fuck all that meets the target audience that Panini do.

I didn't know at the time I posted this that DH/Hulk actually was the final original strip; no doubt the dedication was an intentional farewell. www.delusionalhonesty.com/2011/05/ode-to-marvel-uk-may-it-rise-again.html

That dedication now takes on an extra sad tinge.
There are times for long detailed well-reasoned discourse and there are times for a gutteral less than couth reaction. This is one of them: FUCKING DISNEY!
Apologies for the swearing and bold caps.
It's a damn shame. Marvel UK strips have entertained generations of kids. At least the DWM comic strip is still running though so it's not 100% dead, but still...

I've been pondering Marvel Heroes. I've never paid it much attention, the only issue I've bought being Death's Head, but I noticed that the issue before featured Power Man and Iron Fist. Heroes For Hire, Death's Head - children just aren't going to be introduced to lesser characters like this. It'll all be Spider-Man and whatever the current film is.
Having said that, my own introduction to Marvel (and DC) as a child was mainly through TV - Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends, Hulk and so on. Even into my teens, it was the X-Men and Spider-Man cartoons that formed most of my super-hero exposure. I guess screen versions are a valid route into super heroes, but you're still not going to access the lesser characters. Some characters - Ghost Rider, Iron Fist, Elektra, Galactus and lots of others - I only really knew from my brother's Top Trumps cards. It was only quite recently that I read a few Power Man & Iron Fist strips - back-up reprints in some 1984 Ben Grimm comics that I bought. As a child, I read super hero comics only really when they were the back-up strips in Transformers and Thundercats, along with annuals and odd comics that my brothers had. The one super hero I read regularly was Spider-Man - and that was only because he shared a title with Zoids.
It's difficult to see there being suitable material available featuring the second-stringers that can be reprinted to showcase the characters to children. Even the headlining characters are going to be difficult to repackage because the US and UK (children's) markets are so different.

Contrary to the above link, the DH/Hulk strip isn't the final UK material. Issue 34 sees Thor team up separately with Spider-Man and, notably, Captain Britain; the latter continues next issue, so I guess that Captain Britain will, appropriately, be the final material. It's interesting to note the artists in the issue. The first story is by "new" artist, Simon Williams, whilst the second is by Marvel UK stalwart, Mike Collins. (Jason Cardy is on colouring duty with Williams, making the issue something of a Welsh affair. )

Marvel Heroes is out now with the Captain Britain tale. It's drawn by Mike Collins. There was only 1 copy in my WH Smiths so it was snagged very quickly.
