Obviously it's a pain in the arse but there's some education need there - "Lisa Walpole, from Norfolk, has been told she must pay £121 to the parcels firm UPS for a £236 clothes order she made from the Norwegian website Onepiece.com, which specialises in premium jumpsuits. At the time of the order the company had promised free international delivery." The postage probably was free; that isn't the same as import vat or collection charges. So that would be £47 VAT plus say £15 fee. So thats £62. I wonder how the remaining £60ish breaks down?

It's over £135 so import duty will be applied, which is about 12% for clothes, that's about £28 The VAT is then charged on the value plus import duty, so 20% of £264, which is about £53. Then the ~£15 fee from the courier company. Total charge around £96. Import duty is probably what makes up the rest, as that varies depending on the product and the material.

Ah yeah I forgot VAT was paid on duty as well. Ive only had to deal with that oonce or twice thankfully.
And reading through some of the links above, there are additional charges if the products or part of the product comes from outside the EU which would more than likely account for the extra.

Moneybox had an interesting article on CUTA this weekend that had an expert trying to summarise the changes. It starts 17 minutes in: www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m000sgwkAlso points out that bizarre charges applied by couriers that don't seem to match the rules, where the original seller didn't apply VAT properly, might well be because the couriers have no idea what they're doing.

Phil has just placed a £200 order with RK. Place bets now It got caught. I know this because the tracking tells me so. The tracking tells me I must wait for a letter from Parcel Farce with a Parcel Farce code in it to let me pay the charge. Why I can't pay it straight off the tracking number, like I can with Royal Mail, I do not know......

After giving up on finding a UK stockist, I am importing the WORLDS COLLIDE set from an Australian shop. It's spent a week pootling around that continent and has now been "advised to Royal Mail".

It's still hopping around Australia and now on its third plane. The tension mounts.
Meanwhile, I have Universe 1.0 Inferno en route from Americaland.
After so long without importing can I avoid CUTA not once...but twice??!!

Apparently, the US package has been delivered to "an individual" in Illinois in Americaland.
The Australian package is "undergoing inspection".
Ralph's adventures with importing are going well.

Without any notification, the Australian package (BB Worlds Collide) suddenly appeared today! No CUTA!
Meanwhile, the American package has resurfaced on tracking. "Shipping information received".
Could my toy luck be beginning to turn?

Not the Aus place I suggested. But yes it does appear as if Australia got the world's stock of that and it's been happily shelf warming there
