Prompted by the recent arrival in my home of MP Megatron. Got me thinking: which is the 'Ultimate' version of ol' Megs? Think I've got all the 'main ones' down above.
I'm gunna vote Infiltration. I much preffer Megs as a git-fook-off TANK! As much as I love G1, he seems to suit a tank more than a hand-gun. And I think he suits a tank better than a space ship as well. I think Infiltration is the best yet cybertronian battle tank version of Megatron (although we haven't seen too clearly the actually tank, one gets the idea). This version's robot mode is so G1ick, yet cybertronic/futuristic as well, and he looks mean mean mean! IMHO it's about as perfecta Megatron as we could get, that's how much I like it. Wish they did a toy of it.

Depends is this about the best toy or the best embodiment of megatron. My favourite toys would probably be G2 hero Megatron which isnt on the list. Hero Megs is great because its to scale with all 3 big G2 primes and has a load of articulation. Oh and I like the purple. TM Megs close second (also not on list:) ) As for embodying the character I think just to be awkward cause its not on the list either Animated Megatrons appearance in the pilot came over really well. Serious, deadly but not invincible. It seems Megatron now must always be the ultimate fighting machine that only Prime can stand up to. Since Armada Megatron never seems threatened by any other Autobot and it bugs me. Watching G1 recently I like that Megs is tough but cant just stand around while the entire Autobot army stands firing at him, only to be beaten by Prime Super Power Up, merge to combine, linking keys bullshit. In my mind's nostalgic eye, I will always back original G1 Megatron. His design is perfection, and the toy version is so ridiculous that i can't help but laugh whenever i see it.
That said, i also liked the War Within tank, and the robot mode too. Was really well executed.

Hate to sound like a fanboy, but I reckon the original has yet to be bettered. Specifically the Japanese version that actually fires little pellets from the pistol and the gun turret you can make from the accessories. It was a remarkable piece of engineering for its time, it comes with loads of extra stuff, it's a fun (albeit politically incorrect) roleplay toy and I just like the look of it. Second place I give to Armada Megatron, which has heaps of features and Minicon points which was, after all, the point of the line.

Animated Megs could be a top contender to best G1 Megs. ^^

I agree with Nick, and just add that I also like the G2 tank Megs as it makes me laugh. "Megatron attack!"

I'm going to have to abstain on this one - I am in two minds to be honest. I love the engineering on the original Megatron toy, some of the accessories (the forked-blade sword for example), and the fact that he is close to 1:1 scale in his alt-mode (a lot closer than the Masterpiece one) is a nice touch as well.
One the other hand, in terms of being a _toy_ rather than a piece I'd want to display I'd have to say I lean towards G2 Tank Megs having the edge - he's chunky, has electronic sound effects and a gun that shoots large projectiles. Just the sort of thing I would have loved as a kid.

I was kindoff going for the best 'embodiement' of Megatron, in a general sense. So I put, for example, one T-Rex for all T-Rexs. Shoulda been clearer on that really. I should've maybe, therefore, have put G1 and Masterpiece as the same item, 'cos MP is really a 'super' G1 version of Megatron, which is what got me think of the 'ultimate' version of Megatron. Interesting opionions though. Alot of thought going to a Tank version as perhaps the 'ultimate' alt mode.

One wonders how many additional Megatrons have come out in the last 12 years across all lines. Must be at least 50.

I don't care what anyone says about the ridiculous-Ness of a giant robot turning into a human sized handgun, THIS is Megatron. The best disguise of all time. Being able to shrink beyond the perception of other robots view. Sod the stupid cartoon version that has another Decepticon weild him and use him as an actual gun, Marvel got it right! It is a disguise. He is a weapon as a robot. A disguise as a gun. Yes a toy gun is taboo nowadays but that's what Megatron is all about. It's poetic thst he becomes the most unsuitable thing. The second Masterpiece is the ideal perfect version of Megatron by far. I've never transformed mine, but knowing it can do this is enough. As a toy however it has to be the original. I still want an R rated film made based on Shooting Star.

Also, y'know, he's the leader of a group that call themselves "Decepticons". They deceive. By nature and by design. The hand gun is perfect for that.
Speaking of which, my current choice for current best Megatron has to be MP-36+, just because it's so shiny.
If we're talking about Beast Wars Megatron, though, well, he's a completely different character, so for me doesn't come into consideration here.

Why? Galvatron is just the city commander, what does he have to do with Megatron?

The fact that Auntie gave them Earthen equivalents of their Cybertronian modes and he was given a handgun as opposed to say a tank or mobile artillery piece would suggest he was a handgun on Cybertron. That and the fact they developed the ability of transformation suggests a lot of story possibilities not really explored, such as walking into peaceful negotiations with Autobot rulers with Soundwave and whoever, nodding his head and transforming to gun mode and killing the Autobot rulers.

I don't know enough about Transformers outside the G1 cartoons and the toys but can the Cybertronian Alt-Modes change scale? Or was that only part of the Earth rebuilds?

Wasn't it mentioned in the letters page that Megatron was originally a flying cannon/gun like Shockwave and Straxus? I always assumed the size changing was an Earth thing.

Dreamwave brought up something interesting in a way that indicated they were going to explore, and it's a shame that they never got to and an even greater shame that no one else bothered to follow through... Why do their cybertronian modes have cockpits for tiny beings?

Honestly, I think it's Siege.
I know the mold has its faults, but he looks G1y in robot mode, with a great head sculpt, and has a nice no-noneense tank mode.
