The Record is essentially the Scottish edition of the Mail, though both can be found up here. -Ralph No, the Daily Record is actually quite directly the Scottish equivalent of the Daily Mirror. The Daily Mail is a very different paper and has its own Scottish edition, the Scottish Daily Mail. They are easily confused as the Daily Record's Sunday edition is called the Sunday Mail, and the Daily Mail's Sunday edition is the Mail on Sunday.

I've only just read the Seibertron.com comments and I found them amusing! To be fair though I find a number of posts on that forum amusing because they seem to be written by people who don't seem to think about what they're writing. I actually joined Seibertron.com before I came on board here a few years ago and - one post later - I gave up on the forum! It seems that things never change!

I like how the person who posted the first comment on the Sun website somehow managed to link it with his/her hatred for Muslims and their distaste for pigs and pork-based products!
Also, the Sun story and the News.com story seem almost identical in their wording. Are they both the same group or has one copied the story from the other and passed it off as their own?

I know I don't quite share the level of outrage as some of you over this but the 60 page TFW thread has left me feeling sick. The attitude of so many who at other times seem perfectly reasonable just amazes me.

Andy It gets worse, one of the moderators there has started a 'Spastic Fan Club', a special board where they talk about kitbashing him with a wheelchair and crutches. It has pretty much made me decide to never go to that site again for a good long while.

Yeah I saw that, how he thinks that isn't deliberately causing offense I have no idea. In fairness though he said he shut down the kitbashing talk, but what he thought was going to be dscussed if not that is beyond me.

Ooh, look, The Sun is copying The Mail word for word in places. Nice, thorough journalism, there; no wonder it's got such a good reputation....

Andy I'm sure I will get in trouble for daring to criticise the mod in question, but I think it needs to be said! If anyone has an account there, a post of support would be appreciated, but it's not a place I'd recommend hanging around at the moment! www.tfw2005.com/boards/transformers-news-rumors/343260-uk-newspaper-catches-wind-pcc-spastic-42.html#post5401589

After all, if it doesn't offend them personally it doesn't matter!

Online reaction to this issue merely confirms my recent feelings of pulling back on Transformers for a while and focussing on other things. The fandom has an ugly intolerant side which has been exposed by this which turns my stomach.

I'm not sure turning the situation into an "us and them" thing is best way to go, to be honest.
These words only have the power to offend while we choose to be offended by them.
Remember what we were told at school: Sticks and stones may break my bones, but the Internet can never hurt me.
Certainly, a lot of the more ignorant comments are offensive, but what good will it do us if we give them the time and reaction they so desperately crave?

Certainly, a lot of the more ignorant comments are offensive, but what good will it do us if we give them the time and reaction they so desperately crave? That's basically my opinion on the subject as well, which is why I rarely comment on the "Spastic" situation itself, but rather that the Americans etc are being insensitive to other cultures' view points. I mean, regardless of their stance of "if you aren't getting it in your country then why moan?" if the brits released a toy called something like "Fag Pipe" they'd find it offensive, even if it never came out in the US Online reaction to this issue merely confirms my recent feelings of pulling back on Transformers for a while and focussing on other things. The fandom has an ugly intolerant side which has been exposed by this which turns my stomach. -Ralph Then again you get people like that in every fandom in existence

If a British toy company released a pair of transforming robots that transformed into a plane and a mock-up of the World Trade Centre where both characters had to combine to create a larger robot would the Americans find this humorous as well? Somehow, I doubt it.

I have been reminded once again why this is one of the only Transformers forums I am actually active on. I think that the separation that this allows from the broader Transformers fan community is probably good for my blood pressure in all honesty.

The comment I made earlier was a bit offensive I do admit and I apologise if it did offend anybody here but I made it just to prove a point. The point in that our American cousins have little to no understanding how offensive the word 'spastic' is to us in the UK and I needed to give an example that would hit closer to home for them in terms of causing offensive.

Good. Hasbro UK's earlier statement implicitly acknowledges that toys find their way into the UK through means other than Hasbro ("and will not be available via traditional retail channels in Europe, including the the UK"). Apparently Toys R Us and the supermarket chains all buy from outside of Hasbro UK's supply change. This toy probably would have ended up on our shelves at some point and then it would have got really bad for Hasbro. Hopefully Hasbro can do the sensible thing and call it Drag Strip now. If they'd have done that to start with or as soon as people told them it was a problem we'd have been saved all the fuss.

No, you did not. Slurring a country is not acceptable on this board. Consider this a warning. -Ralph
