Batman was in G2...?
It's a good theory, CJ, but nothing can explain the bonkers colouring of G2.
Except perhaps LSD.

I bet you anything thats it for ramjet, too. It may even be the reason why Starscream diverges so much, so they could try to keep ramjet white. But decided they would still be too similar. Which begs the question that if they wanted to keep Ramjet white, then why not just change Starscream to white in the first place? If they'd stayed with something closer to his original colours, or gone with something else for him like the black-gold scheme which they looked at for a possible redeco then he wouldn't have clashed with Ramjet. Of course, then we wouldn't have got purple Ramjet, so it would have been our loss in that case. Karl My guess would be someone decide Starscream and others had to remain close to his original colours so that he bore some resemblance to his cartoon appearance. Because thinking about it now, all the regulars from the cartoon that got G2 reissues stayed relatively close to G1. Hasbro ditched the grey* and generally made them more bright, but still recognisable. Sideswipe and Ramjet were probably not deemed cartoon regulars so could be more radically recoloured to fill whatever gaps existed on Hasbro colour charts. *Grimlock was released in grey then switched to the blue that while much blingier still sort of resembles the cartoon appearance. Snarl and Slags green for grey also make similar sense. Starscream swaps grey for bright white and Primes Trailer gets the first black repaint. Why they didn't just release Cliffjumper instead of Hubcap I still don't understand.

It's highly plausible cliffjumper's mold was MIA or toast. I honestly think that's why sludge and swoop never turned up (despite the concept art)
As for Sideswipe, I think they chose him to be black, because Inferno is red. And a black sportscar works better than a fire truck of any other color but red.
Ramjet: hypothesis. I had forgotten he was purple, and remembered him being black. As I stated earlier, I figure they chose a conehead to be the second jet instead of Skywarp or Thundercracker, because they offered new tooling, and thus something different from it's assortment mate. However, being primarily white and red puts him as being basically the same visually as Starscream. So you gotta wonder, why choose Ramjet, over Thrust (maroon and black) or Dirge (blue and gold)? Here's my new hypothesis: Thrust has largely all the same basic shapes as Starscream. He wouldn't be much different looking than Starscream. So Dirge seems logical. Dirge was a deep blue. G2 Rammy's purple is a rather logical more "villainous" looking color. I think they may have intended Dirge. Designed the colors based on Dirge. But the Dirge tooling was unusable, and they instead just transplanted it to Ramjet.
That, or from the start Ramjet's was the only usable tooling period, and they just changed up the colors cause Starscream is white, and there were no other purple toys on the shelf

Sludge had been used relatively recently for the Chinese TFs/Classics.
There's a good chance the G2 mouldings are the Chinese/Classics ones as there's a large intersection between the character sets used. Slag, the Jets & Minibots are the only G2 recycles that hadn't had a Classics (or Euro) release, I'd have to research if they had a Chinese use or not but I suspect they did. Actually I seem to recall tales of Minibots showing up in UK Woolworths at the same time as the Constructicons, and I'm pretty sure all five mail away Dinobots in Japan for Zone/Return of Convoy(?) are known to be Chinese.
Op, the 3 Autobot Cars, both Special Team Combiners and Grimlock & Snarl had had a Classics release. The Constructicons had had their euro release in 92 and were still on UK shelves, alongside left over Chinese Constructicons in some Woolworths, at the point G2 started in the US which may partially account for the non appearance of G2 Constructicons in Europe.

Because thinking about it now, all the regulars from the cartoon that got G2 reissues stayed relatively close to G1. Hasbro ditched the grey* and generally made them more bright, but still recognisable. But the thing is Starscream's original colour _is_ grey(with red-trim), not white. So, what I was getting at is that they'd actually taken him a long way from his original colour scheme by adding all that white. Karl

Yeah I meant, G1 Starscream is red and grey. Grey is not acceptable to G2, but as the only significant Decepticon reissue appearing in the cartoon the colour scheme has to stay somewhat true to the original. So they turn the grey to white and brighten the red till its almost glow in the dark orange/pink.
Then Jettys theories on Ramjets colour changes seem pretty sound.

It's highly plausible cliffjumper's mold was MIA or toast. I honestly think that's why sludge and swoop never turned up (despite the concept art) I thought it was due to declining sales, wouldn't make sense for them to put the effort in if the moulds were dead. As for Cliffjumper, the mould was still around as they used it for the keychain version in 2001. Could easily have been misplaced around G2 time though. I don't think Cliffjumper was a Chinese release either [definitely didn't hit the UK along with the other Minibots in Woolworths, although we did get Cosmos which doesn't match up with the other Chinese Minibot releases].

Maybe not as bad as you think: - 2001 was the first release, on the original style card - 2003 was the Takara release, in the little boxes with Dreamwave Bumblebee artwork - 2007 was the release on Heroes of Cybertron card

Looking at those images make it look like they where originally designed for another line first then make into Transformers because of how those figures fit better than the Action masters & Micromasters toys

www.allspark.com/2017/06/artwork-surfaces-unused-generation-2-designs-quickswitch-landcross/A bunch of unused G2 art. Some we've seen, some we haven't. Of note, we have a yellow Sideswipe, a Decepticon Quickswitch, the Landcross team, two Starscreams and sandstorm (we've seen protos of), Dirge, Ramjet, and Thrust, and the unreleased Gobots, and a micromaster team!

I've heard at least rumors of most of these. Like I'd never seen any proof, but I'd at least heard there was a yellow/gold Jazz planned. I've seen proto photos of Sandstorm and the Starscreams (sounds like a band), and the gobots. I've seen art for the dinobots, and mirage.
But completely new to me is yellow Sideswipe, the coneheads, landcross team, micromaster team, and COMPLETELY left field is that DECEPTICON Quickswitch!

I don't quite understand why there are two Starscreams. Although this was G2, so, I guess... ;-)
Also, I quite want that Canesten-Craving Jazz.
