5) Sky High I think we can all agree that the wave 2 1988 Pretenders - which we didn't get in the UK - are better than the Wave 1 ones. Sky High here actually manages to look like he's got a proper vehicle mode albeit at the cost of having the blades on his arm. 4) Pincher There's odd things going on with the smaller Pretenders. Stranglehold & Longtooth break the shell pattern for their faction and it would make sense to me have the Autobot vehicles againt the Decepticon animals, swapping Pincher's robot/creature to the Decepticons (as a Pretender Scorponok ?) and Bludgeon's to the Autobots. As it is it's a bit confused. But the first small TF Scorpion? Sold! Or I wish I had been. 3) Bumblebee The classic Pretenders are a massive step forward for the TF line as they really acknowledge the value of character. Yes there's Golbug in 87 and PM Prime in 88 but these 89 classic Pretenders are the first time Hasbro has brought a number of older characters back. BB gets a gun and his comic/cartoon face for the first time which is reason alone to buy the toy..... 2) Grimlock ..... whereas Grimlock is anything is a HUGE step down from his anticendant but still to my mind the best of the Classic Pretenders. It captures the essence of the character nicely. Points for the gun/sword too. 1) Crossblades So Pretenders: Robots disguised as Humans? Good idea. Monsters... ummmmm. Creatures .... OK. Vehicles - I'm sorry that's just silly, that's what TF's do anyway. But somehow the next stage up, the Mega Pretenders, works for me. Shell turns into vehicle and in Crossblades' case it's a nice one. The inner robot is so so but adding the jet to the copter really adds something to it. If I could have one Pretender it'd be Crossblades.

Pretenders. Good one.
Ok, in no order this time.
Classics Pretenders Jazz. Never owned one, but love the entire concept of 'Classic Pretenders' big time. I wish they'd done a second wave, which could easily have featured a certain police car Autobot we all know and love.
Roadgrabber. One of the few Pretenders I have owned, for some reason. Just so much going on! The vehicle, the inner robot. Lots of play potential. The later Pretenders are often criticised for, perhaps, missing the point. And yes they do get rather complicated. But there's awesome play-value in them, and Roadgrabber is a prime example.
Pincher. Big Phil raised a great point about this wave of Pretenders being a big mixed up. Pincher is the only Pretender I had as a child, so there is a lot of nostalgia attached to him. But I also love this wave of Pretenders for their diversity, and pincher is the perfect example of this this mixed-up crazy-ass wave of Pretenders.
Bludgeon. I'm a big fan, as many are, of the character. Never owned the original toy, but own the outstanding Voyager Movie version. He's just such an imaginative bringing together of different ideas: samurai, tank, Decepticon. Brilliant.
Classic Pretenders Prowl--- oh no wait, just my dreams poking through to reality! Again! Hey-Ho.

And the best part is, they'd forget it after a few seconds so you continuously get the same tormented response.
Anyway, on with the countdown-
1. Metroplex. Weee... Large triple changer base, Six-Gun, Scamper. 2. Hot Rod. Love the futuristic alt mode, one of the movie based toys that actually turned out ok. 3. Ratbat. Great cassette, who thought that wing-span would be possible? 4. Springer. Triple changer, a little simple, but there's something about him that calls to me. 5. Galvatron. Big lazer gun with multiple sounds.
I really want to say Cyclonus, but I think it's just nostalgia entering into my judgement.

Oddly Cyclonus was very close to making my list too! 5) Hot RodBest of the Movie toys: actually looks a realisticish car and has a see through windscreen! Decent colour balance too! The 88 update is even better but hasn't a hope of making the top 5 for that year! 4) BruticusThere is a reason why Bruticus has been back so many times: it's very good. You've heard me moan much in the past about how I feel Superion and Menasor aren't representative of their factions: well Bruticus is, made up of Military vehicles.... and a Space Shuttle. Has it ever struck anyone else as odd that there's a space shuttle in Bruticus? Like all Special teams the individual limb robots and vehicles are fine but there's something extra with Onslaught being able to carry one of the others and having the best base mode of the four leaders. Plus the combine robot works better than the two earlier special team combiners. 3) DefensorBut just as Bruticus is a decent representative combined robot for the Decepticons, Defensor is even better shouting Autobot with lots of reds and whites involved. Yes it could be a tad better - the only reason I can assume Hot Spot is blue is that Inferno was still on the market! The repair bay limbs are a nice add on and the combined head is actually housed in the leader's body. 2) MetroplexI remember very clearly walking into the Zodiac toys in Kingston and seeing the 86 TFs on the shelves for the first time. There in the middle was Metroplex huge and waaaaay beyond anything I could afford. The first citybot. Fabulous stuff even today. The only snag is the waist which deteriorates over time. And he combines with the Special Team toys. Fab. 1) Ultra MagnusOptimus Prime's robot was fab to start with. Give it a new coat of paint and a car transporter trailer he can use to tow other Autobot cars on - fab. Then have him combine with the trailer to form a larger robot? Superb! Yes the body is a brick but it stands up ok and the arm articulation is fabulous better than some of his imeadiate succesors in the cab/trailer combining stakes. The last gasp of Diaclone in the Transformers line.

Animated Activators Bumblebee. Puts it more in scale with the other figures in the line, doesn't cheat on the chest like the deluxe does. Good flip change feature. Movie Camaro Concept Bumblebee. G1 Bumblbee. Such a classic. Classics Bumblebee. A good reimagining, but not really sure on the Jet Ski accessory. Alternity Bumblebee. OK... So the robot is a little doofy, but I'm a sucker for this line.
If only G. was still here, he could vote for Movie Ultimate Bumblebee.

5) Minibot Bumblebee The toy that started all, helped admitedly by very strong support from both animation and comics. I can't decide if I like this or the Reissue with the face better so the original wins it. 4) 30th anniversary Generations Legends Bumblebee: smaller than the classics version, identifiably BB and just fun. 3) Cyberverse Battlesuit Bumblebee there's just something about putting one of the smallest Autobots into a massive armed and armoured battlesuit. Yes the toy could have been made of better plastic and yes the vehicle base mode is a bit something of nothing but I just love the robot mode. 2) Legends Bumblebee Bumblebee is meant to be small and Universe Legends captured him perfectly straight out of the box. I've lost count of how many different versions of this I've got but nothing has outright beaten the original version. 1) Wal*Mart Classics Bumblebee Inevitably the Classics BB mould has to be a winner. But which one? The grey stripes of the original classic BB aren't quite right, and the plain yellow of Henkei just looks wrong. United Bumblebee is the closest we have to a classics Goldbug. It's a fab deco but it needs an alternate head and I was afraid to touch mine! The RTS BB in Orange is just wrong. My Fave is the Wal*Mart version from the 3 pack with the stripes in black and clear blue plastic windows. It's not perfect - I'd prefer the black seats (and thus upper leg fronts) of the Japanese versions but the overall look of this version is the best. The car's about the right shape and the robot's packed with articulation. Love.

Catch up time in no order Week 6: MegatronYour top 5 toys named Megatron. 5. Masterpiece Megatron - it might get a lot of stick and it certainly has its flaws, but it takes the original Megatron toy design and just about manages to make a robot that resembles the G1 animation model while retaining the original toys robot features. 4. G2 Megatron/Hero Megatron - if these two had been combined it would stil be the best Megatron of all time I think. I prefer the size and articulation of the hero, but love the slightly different visual of the larger toy, its angles and proportions just seem to work better. 3. Actionmaster Megatron - Love actionmasters and Megatron comes with a really fun tank. 2. BW TM Megatron - I dont really share the love of TM2, maybe its bias as I dont really like the TM2 designs across the board. But for me this was the perfect Megatron, just the right size, (Croc was too small the rest too big)great articulation and features and much more show accurate. Obviously now knowing that they disintegrate I know they have a major flaw, but as it didnt have that issue in the time I regularly played with it I dont care. 1. Classic Megatron - well actually the United one or which ever I bought of Phil. Either way I'm a big fan of the mould whether grey and silver or green and purple. Bubbling under: I wanted to add G1 Megatron, but I wanted to add Browning even more but as thats not a Megatron I felt I couldnt add Megatron. Likewise I considered MW Megatron but Megaplex is much better. 5. Brave Max - Mine is very incomplete but the colours are so good. 4. CR Convoy - I was lucky enough to get one of the translucent versions and its beautiful. I am terrified to transform it so it stays in Super robot mode all the time, but thats okay. 3. Build Boy - I love the name and I love the toy. its fun, the perfect size and the robot mode looks and feels like a G1 animation model. And its a combiner 2. JRX - Only got them a year or so about they are great. Individual modes are a little odd but combined they are onee of the best balanced combiners Transformers has produced. 1. Sky Byte - Another I only got last year from Toy Fu and mostly on the list for the cartoon character to be honest, but it is actually a much better figure than I ever give Cybershark credit for. Bulbing under: all the spy changers 5 Vroom - One of the few I had, but I still think it has one of the nicer, that is sleeker inner robots. A decent robot mode and even without bits it still sort of resembles a car which is more than most. The Shell has a great robot mode and decent bike too. 4. Thunderwing - Only got it a few years ago and like Vroom on the list for its inner robot. As good a robot mode and an alt mode that actually looks like a jet. Not so keen on the shell, it looks slightly off in robot mode. 3. Pincer -Growing up between me and my brother we usually managed to get one representative from each line sometime one bot one con. Pincer was our small pretender guy, but I still think hes one of the most fun. Scorpion mode is a lot of fun even if it does rely on one of the bigger add on sets to make it work. 2. Grimlock - This was the subline we got a full set of as we did not have Starscream, Jazz or Bumblebee at he time, but Grimlock is the one that seems to stand up the best. Jazz couldnt see over his chest, Bumblebee was oddly stretched and had a big chunk on his back and Starscream, well Starscream was okay, but just a bit scrawny. Grimlock was a bit of the small side but was well proportioned fun to play with. 1. Grand Max - Not the real Grand Max but the Grand Max I pictured when I first learnt that there was a Fortress Maximus repaint with a pretender shell. Week 9: 1986 toysThis week's top 5 toys is toys that came out in 1986: New Leaders, Special Teams, Movie toys and plenty of non UK released stuff. See www.tfu.info/year/86index.htm for a list 1986 was my first proper year of Transformers so theres a lot of favourites in here 5. Defensor - Some of my very first Transformers and still my favourite combiner. 4. Metroplex - So much to do in one so relatively small toy 3. Ultra Magnus - At this point an Optimus Prime toy was still 2 years away so getting a white repaint was very exciting, that it combined with the trailer to make a bigger robot made it even better. 2. Hot Rod - Not my favourite toy for a long time, but possibly since the underwhelming 2006 classic version its gone up in my mind. Nice car mode and well proportioned robot mode. 1. Wreck Gar - I wish there had been a whole bunch of Junkions made back in the day, admittedly I'd have liked it even more if it was just a little smaller, but I like that it felt more like the diaclone toys than the early Hasbro efforts (I have no idea if it was based on diaclone designs or not, but compared to Rodimus Prime it certainly seems more complexed.) So many Bees. 5. Minobot Bee - Any of them really. I suppose the reissue with cartoon head, but original red Bee and G2 Gold Bee any of them. 4. G2 Gobot Bee - I'm a sucker for the G2 repaints. its not as good as Sideswipe but its still good. 3. Animated Bee - the Takara diver one. It still has the fake chest, but is close to scale with the other toys and unlike the activator it has proper arms and hands. 2. Classic Bee - Again pick a repaint, I like them all. 1. Actionmaster Bee - The first to take in to account the cartoon look of the characters. bubbling under: Prime NYC Taxi Bee. Just because. And theres probably a movie bee I should mention but I can never keep them all straight.

4. G2 Megatron/Hero Megatron - if these two had been combined it would stil be the best Megatron of all time I think. I prefer the size and articulation of the hero, but love the slightly different visual of the larger toy, its angles and proportions just seem to work better. Still want a Green version odf the Hero tank, possibly with a new gun. If anyone sees the Robotmasters Blue tank for sale please LMK! 2. BW TM Megatron - I dont really share the love of TM2, maybe its bias as I dont really like the TM2 designs across the board. But for me this was the perfect Megatron, just the right size, (Croc was too small the rest too big) I keep thinking that a larger Croc Megatron would make a really nice toy. One to think about if ever there's a BW reboot.

Top 5 Bumblebee toys? Wot wot!
Well - here we go:
1. Pretender Bumblebee. Bumblebee gets up-sized, hangs out with Jazz and Grimlock, same line as Starscream, better toy than the original, larger, holds a gun and Pretender Shell has cool visor and 2 guns! Awesome!
2. Classics Legends Bumblebee. Small, so a good scale compared to other toys and gives off a cool Bumblebee vibe.
3. Action-Master Bumblebee. Looks the part and has awesome helicopter doo-hickey.
4. Classics Deluxe Bumblebee. Awesome re-imagining of the character.
5. Worlds Smallest Transformer Bumblebee. Almost identical to the original toy but in a teeny tiny version that's perfectly cute.
That's my top five. Admittedly there are some Movie versions that might come close, Mech-Tech, then the Prime versions are nice, The animated ones are cool (Activators is nice) - but ultimately none break the top five. If I had IDW Bumblebee or the new Masterpiece Bumblebee there might be some adjustment of the list. The fact G2 Bumblebee's didn't make this list (or the original) just shows how many awesome Bumblebees we've had.

Bit of catchup to do myself. Odd, I distinctly remember writing up my Pretenders but I guess it didn't post. Pretenders1. Catilla - I love everything about it. Aside from Grimlock, that's all I owned back in the day (and I never liked Grimlock much). As an adult: 2. Octopunch - lovely and colourful, all modes and shell look nice and well-designed. 3. Vroom - As Bogatan says, nice inner robot, and the shell is good. I sold mine after giving up ever managing to complete him for a reasonable price, slightly regret it. 4. Gunrunner - robot's alt-mode is an odd lump, but still doesn't detract from a really fun toy. And never actually handled but always wanted: 5. Longtooth - great design. 1986 toys1. Tailgate - I loved this as a kid, and am thrilled to see him get some love in MTMTE. 2. Fireflight - I got mine as the free gift for having my letter printed in the UK comic, but aside from that I still think he's cool. One day I will make some effort to put together a full Superion. 3. Metroplex - didn't own one until Encore but did play with a friend's. He's a city! And seemed huge at the time! 4. Pipes - my brother got him when I got Tailgate, I always associate them. Lump in throat during final scene in MTMTE. 5. Hot Rod - again a possession of my brother, and a good toy. Bumblebee1. Classics - I still prefer the Classics deco to the others, the trailer is a nice touch. 2. Action Master - always room for Action Masters, and this one is pleasingly close to the animation model. 3. Arms Micron - the PRID mould is better than most people expect (it's actually pretty good), add a micron partner and it's even better. 4. Battle Blades Bumblebee - the only movie version I own, lots of neat features and looks pretty cool too, especially with the visor down. 5. G1 - it's the original! I have high hopes for the MP, so far they've been doing great work with the recent figures. -Jim

I think the minibot Bumblebee with that bonkers original head remains my favourite due to overwhelming nostalgia. I loved the one I had as a nipper until it was mislaid on waste ground near Adrian Sheridan's house circa 1988. I searched for it for weeks afterwards but to no avail.

5) Slugfest - One of my favourite Spy-cassettes. A fun dinosaur mode, and a lovely gormless expression on his face. 4) Bruticus - a good clear military vehicles theme (even back then I'd read speculation about a USAF Spacecraft program so the idea of Blast Off as a military orbiter seemed to make sense to me), really nice proportions on the combined mode and a reasonably unified colour scheme (although my favourite scheme on then molds is probably the Urban Camo Ruination one) 3) Ultra Magnus - I can't separate the toy from the character in this case. He is one of my favourite TFUK characters in plastic form so I am going to think he is great regardless. But for all that, I think it has some great play value, and some good interaction with the other toys in vehicle mode. 2)Galvatron - fantastic futuristic update of Megatron. Has the articulation to punch, heel-kick and deliver a solid knee to the chest any Autobot who gets in the way of his machinations. A Lazor-gun mode with multiple settings like Star Trek led us to expect, and a cannon mode for when he wants to flatten Metroplex without getting his hands dirty. 1) Metroplex - Bulky, powerful looking, humanoid mode with absolutely absurd amounts of firepower. A fun base-mode with lots if interactivity possible, and a land battlefortre...battleship mode which is great fun to trundle about. A winner Week 10: Bumblebee toys 5) Classics Legends Bumblebee - Great fun little toy, replicates the fun of the simple transformation of the original Bumblebee. 4)Pretender Bumblebee - A good Animation model Bumblebee, with good articulation and a fun heli-pack (flight packs are always good fun) 3)Classics Bumblebee - a really nice way to update the vehicle mode and a fun toy to play with, and the trailer turning into an integrated version of Flight-pack is a nice touch. I would like it even more if it had the original Bumblebee head design rather than the humanised Animation model version. 2) G2 Bumblebee - the original Bumblebee, with a shiny chrome finish. Marvelous. 1) 1984 Bumblebee - A fun little toy. Simple but enjoyable transformation, a great little SD vehicle mode. Wasn't one of my first Transformers, but will always have a special place in my heart. (I always prefered the original head design as well.) Karl

5) Supercon Optimus PrimeThe Superbase Optimus Prime is a mixed bag. But the smaller deluxe version is fabulous and has a great Minicon. Two fabulous repaints and representation in three other toylines 4) WheeljackCriminally unreleased in the UK this is a fab car and chunky robot. How it has never had a huge number of repaints as Sideswipe, Red Alert etc I will never know. 3) MegatronSuperb toy. Two decent modes. That action feature. 2) OverloadLove Overload. Sue me. Sure the vehicle mode is um..... yes. But it serves as a carrier for Jetfire.. The weapon station is a great add on for the superbase Prime. But the robot mode is where it's at for me. It just looks fab, big and chunky. It makes the tf noise as you attach the Minicon. 1) HoistHoist is just so waaaaaay out in front here it's untrue. The vehicle mode is rare at the deluxe side. The transformation works and the robot mode look fab. There's a great action feature. Love it. On my all time list of favourite transformers and possibly my favourite released during the 2000s. Now for a proper Constructicon Scavenger repaint! Bubbling under: Nemesis Prime, Skywarp, Predacon, "Dirge" Powerlinx Thrust & "Thrust" Powerlinx Thrust (proof, with TM2 Cybershark that grey and green do not mix on a toy), Unicron, Jetfire, Demolishor & Powerlinx CyclonusArmada wasn't the worst toyline in recent times by any means. It's just the bad has rather stuck in the mind.

All Unicron for me, baby. I didn't have many of the toys. Liked Megatron, and still have all three big Armada Decepticon jets (Srarscream, Thundercracker and Skywarp). But it's Unicron who's the daddy here. Our first Unicron toy. Still get alot of enjoyment out of him. So, top five Armada would have to be-
1. Unicron 2. Longrack (sold with Buzzsaw as a set) 3. Buzzsaw (sold with Longrack as a set) 4. Big Decepticon jets 5. Megatron
Am I correct in thinking Longrack was the same mold as Hoist, Big Phil? I love that set, it's like two Beast Wars figures coming through a Portal into the Armada Universe! And they're great figures.
Nostalgic line Armada, more nostalgic than I realised. The big chunky designs got me back into collecting TFs after my Dry Spell.

I don't think I've had any of the other toys except Hot Shot, who is a horrible horrible toy. I guess he can have the #5 spot by default then, for he did give us JaAm.

I love the designs, but I really hate the final toys. I think it might have been that Armada was the first Transformers line as I went to university and I wanted it to be awesome. It wasn't.
But 1. Supercon Prime - some how came out of this series and is one of my favourite toys ever. It gets the Armada look, but they gave it half decent articulation AND one of the few decent minicons from the line I like. I'm amazed it hasnt been recycled as an extra target master mould in the last few years.
2. Hoist - A close second, it might be top if I had found it in the day, but by the time it came out I think I had given up on the line. Came across it in 2006 at a car boot sale and the first time I got a complete version of the mould was the excellent Pre BW Dinobot.
3. Unicron - Not perfect and it tried to blind me a few times. But finally getting a Unicron was worth it.
Struggling now... erm.. 4. Sideways - All right, it looks like a lost toy design from 1988 and maybe thats why its lack of articulation doesnt bother me. I think the only joint on the toy that arent right out of the 80s are on the 2 minicons/headmasters, which are the other two minicons I like.
5. Smokescreen - I dont know it was the first Armada figure I bought, first transformer I bought living in the US so theres nostalgia.
or
5. Starscream - My 21st birthday present. I still love the look of it and am hoping the new Gernations one proves to look as good.

That was a good figure. Aaaand, hmmm... Big Optimus was't bad either. Nice big powerful Optimus. Nice arm cannons.

I am shocked. Shocked! SHOCKED I SAY!
1) TIDAL WAVE. Giant aircraft carrier. 3 boat fleet. Enormous robot. Megatron power armour. Great Mini-con, Mini-con storage and activated feature. 2) Megatron. Big chunky robot, full of Mini-con hard points and features. Also it combines with Tidal Wave. 3) Demolishor. Unique vehicle mode, good suite of articulation, only let down by an absolutely pump Mini-con feature. 4) Starscream. First Starscream figure in a western TF line since 1994 by my count, and what a figure. sleek, distinctive jet mode and a cool Mini-con feature. 5) Air Defense Team- 3 nifty, well-articulated figures that turn into distinctive jets and combine into a fearsome weapon. Holds together pretty well too.
Wasn't a great line for Autobots, Armada, was it?

Megatron and Tidalwave have grown on me over the years, but I have never been able to forgive the lack of articulation. I understand the reasoning, but it was far too much of a backward step, especially in the larger figures. Overload too has grown on me. Big Prime and Jetfire have not.
Theres a fantastic fix for Tidalwave which involved a straight swap of Cybertron Jetfire (I think). Those few extra joints add so much.
