And a certain issue of PM/IF. That needs reading before 23. The other crossovers fit in anywhere, but annuals 3 and 4 both need to be read before certain points - Rom Annual 4 between 72 and 73, can't remember about 3 but it's something like between 60 and 61.

I got the impression that Ralph was in need of a pick-me-up in light of recent Essays of Doom. I made it clear that it was a birthday present from yourself.

The read-through began last night with #1-2. It's fairly mental from the off. There's a great moment when ROM, instead of just shooting a Wraith-in-human-form with his limbo-gun thing, let's him get into his car. Then he picks up the car and throws it in the air. Before it falls to Earth, he shoots the Wraith into limbo while the wraith-bloke is still in his car screaming his head off, just before it falls to the ground and explodes.
That's hardcore.

I'm glad you've finally got starated. Do let us know how it goes. I'd be particularly keen to here comments on 22-26 which are my favorite issues.

Those issues in particular are mad beyond words. The covers alone are just an escalating adventure into insanity.

Read up to #6. The haunted house story was particularly mad and only needed half an issue. Take note, writers of decompresed stories.

Sadly I don't have #6 in my loaner pile from Nick, but the issues I have read are rather good. There is a lot of bonkers Mantlo-ness to them, but at the same time there is a quite bleak undercurrent to some of it. It even makes me believe in the Mad Thinker as a viable character, and I am warming to the small supporting cast - Brandy's reaction to what is happening to her life rings true in a comic-booky way.
Yep, very enjoyable stuff.

That is a rather nice pic. One might almost say Romtastic.
In my peruse of the pile of "Rom" on loan from Nick I am about to start #21, featuring the return of the rather low-rent Torpedo (who I have always been fond of). Good, bonkers stuff so far. The appearance of Space Phantom was a bit of a highlight - although the X-Men/Rom/Hybrid brawl was rather good as well.
I have to say that I like the idea of the Dire Wraiths having wormed their way into governmental office, and control of parts of the black budget. This is how you run a stealthy invasion of a planet - don't concentrate on the Superheroes, target the infrastructure and the systems of control. With those in your hands you can go a long way to neutralising anyone who stumbles on what you are doing. There's a decent "bodysnatchers" idea in the background of "Rom" and some quality Mantlo bonkersness up front. A winning combination.

Oooh, that's nice. Who's the artist ? That would be me. Ralph asked me to do a version of TFUK#205 with Rom instead of Galvatron standing atop of heap of something or other. That's what I've done so far, just not sure what to have as the pile of bodies. Andy

The ROMathon is now up to #33. What a cracking comic. Also much more enjoyable to read in order than in the random order of picking up an issue everynow and then. I like the high amount of ideas thrown at the reader and the denseness of each issue. I also find myself caring about the characters and wondering what will happen to them! Also, it really does have a sense of 'any character can be killed at any time', which adds genuine tension. Yeah, there's a huge amount of cheese (which is a part of the fun), but I think a lot of contemporary comics writers could learn a lot from Mantlo's pacing.

Glad you're liking it. I think the Power Man & Iron Fist, Nova and vs Galactus issues are the best
