Amazon tell me Essential Power Man & Iron Fist v2 is about to go in the post. You need this trade as it's got issue 100 and the run up to it reprinted within which is the best the title ever was post Byrne/Claremont

THE ETERNALS by Jack Kirby Vols 1-2. Picked these up at Chrimbo and forgot to read them until now! Very rough round the edges, not a smoove read and it's easy to see how it didn't catch on with readers at the time. However, it is a fun read with masses of Big Ideas thrown at the reader at a fair rate of licks and it arguably works better now than it did then, I think. And in Karkas we have the Sensational Character Find of 1976! marvel.wikia.com/wiki/Karkas_(Earth-616)I really cared what happened to him! But, yes, once you get past the roughness of it, it's just terrific rip-roaring stuff. The world is a duller place without King Kirby. His comics never fail to entertain me. Recomended. -Ralph

I keep meaning to get these as I had a random issue, the one with the Astronauts and the unnamed eternal as a kid. Loved it to bits.

The Eternals is one piece of Kirby's work that I have never actually read. I have encountered the characters as written by others in various guest appearances, but I have never quite gotten around to going back to the source.

In general it can be summed up as: blokes in crazy costumes bursting into rooms screaming: "THE SPACE GODS ARE BACK!". Repeat to fade! Great, though.

Essential Classic X-Men 3 My that Adams stuff is good, head and shoulders above other art at the time. Well worth a read and nice to see the Beast stories collected.

Annihilation Classic was half-price in FPG. This made me very happy for it has the Rocket Racoon mini (that was in Marvel's TF-UK) in it! And very good repro too.

There's some nice Panini trades listed on Amazon. I'm all for booking up my Astonishing X-Men and flogging the floppies, and here's hoping their Origin of the Hobgoblin has the complete issues rather than the slightly cut versions in the US trades. Either way if you don't have a copy I'd recomend buying it for some great Stern Spiderman action.

Today I discovered that a Marvel Masters John Byrne exists. What's more it reprints Alpha Flight 12 (not in the only Alpha Flight Classic volume) as well as some Iron Man and Namor I don't have. I must have this.

All Star Superman V2 has dropped onto the doormat. Good stuff, better in the trade, an intorduction by Mark Waid had me checking stuff and noticing things I missed first time. Recomended cos it's Morrison/Quitely but you can bet that they'll be a big combined volume a siome point.

Mini Marvels: Secret Invasion. The second collection of MM strips and utterly hilarious. Many times I found myself laughing out loud. Such a shame Marvel have canned MM in favour of the souless abomination of Super Hero Squad. I hope we get a further collection with some of the strips originally printed in Bullpen Bits that haven't been reprinted yet.

Captain Britain & MI 13 Volume 1 - top notch stuff. Cornell has a good handle on Wisdom and Brian and the redesign of the costume makes sense and is much better than the shitty one he sported in New Excalibur. Cracking stuff.

Essential Power Man & Iron Fist v2 Lord that was hard going. Mediocre stuff, similar every issue. It only brightens up at the end when Busiek comes on board and produces the run leading up to 100 which is top stuff and worth the price of the whole trade.
Daredevil: Lady Bullseye I do love my six monthly does of Brubaker Daredevil. This time the hand show up with a new Assasin persuing a number of targets. It's got Brubaker writing Iron Fist in it so you can't really go wrong can you ?

Finally held a copy of Captain Britain V3 in my hands today. Looks good stuff. This missive went to Pannini ( paninicomics@panini.co.uk ) tonight Hi Guys, Captain Britain V4 the Siege of Camelot is listed on Amazon. I've got a question about the contents: www.amazon.co.uk/Captain-Britain-Vol-4-Siege-Camelot/dp/184653433X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1241727869&sr=1-1"Captain Britain returns fighting alongside the Black Knight and Merlyn to save fabled Camelot and Otherworld from the hideous hordes of Necromon! Plus, Captain Britain is reborn as the acclaimed Alan Moore and Alan Davis begin their momentous run and Britain's hero faces the terrifying Fury! Collects Hulk Comic Weekly #42-55, 56-63, Marvel Super Heroes #387-388, Daredevils #1-11 and The Mighty World of Marvel #7-13. " Shouldn't this volume also contain Marvel Super Heroes 377-386, the issues that Dave Thorpe wrote & Alan Davies drew ? Are they actually in the book and Amazon's listing is inaccurate or havethey been left out for some reason ? Thanks,

Marvel Masters: Art of John Byrne
Dark Asylum for GS Dracula 5 makes it in because it's Byrne's first published work for Marvel but a lot of the Byrne style is hidden here. Nevertheless, historical importance etc which is the same reason Marvel Premiere 25 (Iron Fist) gets in as it's first full issue. Byrne's done better Iron Fist stories later in the run.
Marvel Team Up 61 & 62 are an odd choice as they'd just been/or were about to be reprinted elsewhere in the Byrne FF v0. I'd have had the Iron Fist/Daughters of the Dragon 2 part team up, or the Captain Britain 2 parter, or Thor & Havok 2 parter or even just saved space (see later as to why I want an extra issue of space) and gone with the superb but rights limited Red Sonja team up.
Next follows the inevitable Uncanny X-Men 137. We've all read it and it's been collected hundreds of times (I think I've got it on my shelf three times !)
The Fantastic Four contribution comes from the triple sized FF 236 which is a great story featuring two of the FF's long serving villains so is worth it's space.
Captain America 250 follows up - also recently reprinted. Good story this with cap deciding whether to run for president.
Next follows Alpha Flight 12. Oh yeah. But we come to the story already in progress so it would be nice to have got in issue 11 (and the superb ad for 12 - possibly follwing 12 with the companion ad for 17 ) - neither 11 or 12 have previously been reprinted in the UK
Avengers Annual 14 is an odd choice. Kyle Baker's inks don't suit Byrne's art. If we're going for a Byrne drawn Avengers - and this is far removed from his run - I'd have chosen issue 187
Byrne's Hulk run isn't that long so 319 the wedding issue probably makes the most sense to use.
She Hulk 1 is great - can't beat the Circus of Crime and wait till you see who hired them (clue: it's my favorite Defenders villains). Got my Byrne She Hulk run here, must read it again.
Namor 1 likewise sets up the series. Since Iron Fist comes back from the dead during it I'll have to track these down.
Finally X-Men Hidden Years 22, Byrne's last piece of work for Marvel, ruined by either a new art style or Tom Palmer's inks.
So not a bad volume, but with a tiny bit of tinkering could have been a bit better

Amazon tell me Essential Amazing Spiderman v9 is en route.
I've also (on recomendation from Comics should be Good) taken a plunge into the DCverse with Batman Year One and Killing Joke neither of which I've ever read.

Year One is a good read. Killing Joke is highly over-rated. It looks fantastic and is very readable but it's merely a decent Batman story rather than a classic. It does rely too heavily on the sort of tiresome theatrics Joker stories tend to fall back on.

Got some reading in while the Internet was gone
Essential Amazing Spiderman 9 The annual treat comes around again - got Peter Parker v4 and Marvel Team Up v3 coming soon for more Spiderman action. For context this volume starts at the same time as stories that are in EPPtSSM v1 & EMTU v 3 and concludes alongside EPPtSSM v2 and a potential EMTU v 4. Most of the stiff within is written by Marv Wolfman and for the most part it some ride with nearly every chapter ending in a cliffhanger. That's how to get em back the next month. Cosmic Jim co writes and draws an issue and that's cracking. Byrne draws three issues plus an annual but his two earliest have Byrne's pencils flattened by Jim Mooney's inking which takes out the detail of what makes Byrne art good - compare to the covers of the same issues. The last issue in the volume is John Romita Jr's first.
Cracking volume.
Batman Year One Well I can see where the writers of Batman Begins sourced their script from, this is very similar to the later work. Miller is great as he was at the time, but Mazzucchelli's art isn't as good as it was for the contemporary Daredevil: Born Again. A great read. What's Year Two like ?
Batman The Killing Joke Deluxe Edition Looks superb, as you'd expect from Bolland, and his colouring is vastly improves the story from the earlier version (which I glanced at in another volume in the shops this week). I loved it up till the final confrontation but felt I missed something about what was going on there. A reread will hopefully enlighten me.
