Year Two is decent enough, Alan Davis art on part 1, Todd McFarlane on the rest. He's inked by Alfredo Alcala so the Toddism's are at a minimum but he does Part 4 and it's all Todd. Some pretty ropey storytelling emerges in the last part.

I never really got the love for Year One myself. I imagine it is more a trailblazing product of its time.

Part of what made Year One so good for me, was how different from every other Batman monthly comic we'd had up to that point. Much overlooked is the colouring job from Richmond Lewis on the book. Adds immensely to the atmosphere.

Alright as outlined here Graham has been given a £20 amazon voucher to spend and was considering spending it on All Hail Megatron Volume 1. As good friends we have stepped in and tried to convince him not to. So let's use this thread to recommend some better books and graphic novels for him to spend his free money on. Andy

For great art, stirrring heroics and dense, fun and witty storytelling of the highest order I recommend Thor Visonaries: Walter Simonson vol 1.

I can recommend Ex Machina and Fables. Both are fantastic books.

Marvel Masters: Art of John Byrne The Fantastic Four contribution omes from the triple sized FF 236 which is a great story featuring two of the FF's long serving villains so is worth it's space. Following this I sat down to reread Byrne's FF run in Visionaries. It ticks all the FF boxes, does the cosmic stuff, does Doctor Doom and looks great. And yet.... It just feels like it's missing something. Now it might be I've been reading (and enjoying) too much grim and grittystuff recently and that's coloured my view.... And it's true I'm not the world's biggest FF fan. But .... I've also recently read The DC Universe stories of Alan Moore prompted by Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow popping up in Comics Greatest Moments. It's a fab volume, some good stuff in there especially the short back up features where Moore does more & challenges perceptions in a few pages than most people do in an entire issue. (One about beings moving at a slower rate than the rest of us reminded me of a 2000AD story about a man living his life backwards, possibly by the same author) Worth a look.

New stuff is up. I can see the new additions, just not the older stuff.

It's here ! Falls just frustratingly short of where my Extinction Agenda trade starts. Next volume should be a doozy: 5 issues of UXM, then Days of Future Present (four annuals) (say 2 standard issues each makes 11 issues) then Extinction Agenda (3 UXM + 6 others) (20 issues) leaving just enough space to fit in all the Jim Lee in space issues.
I have mixed memories of this volume though - lets see how it pans out ....

I was pleased to see Essential Thor Volume 4 is finally in release today in FPG. Unfortunately, there appears to have been yet another price increase - £15. I shall patiently wait for Amazon to get it in. It looks brilliant.

There's some in this volume.
(takes quick peak)
Yeah not too bad at all. But if anything it looses something from the colour (unlike, say, Byrne)

Byrne is an artist for me whose work always looks better in black and white.
Another is Alan Davis, I recently snagged Gotham Knights #25 which has his and Mike Barr's eight page black and white tale "One Night in McSurleys". Bloody amazing looking. It's in Batman Black and White volume 3 I think.
