Immortal Iron Fist: Escape from the Eight City Three parts to this book. This first - and biggest - is the Eighth City storyline which is very good indeed, until a few pages before the end when the writer realises he needs to resolve what's going on because the title is being cancelled going on hiatus and you get a few very rushed pages. This is followed by a single issue coda to the story, and indeed the whole series with Danny returning to New York and once again facing down Hydra agents alongside Misty Knight. The revalations contained within aren't unexpected - indeed were signposted in the previous trade. The final few pages of that issue - Danny in a bar with Luke - are worth the cost of the trade themselves. The book rounds off compilation of the series by collecting the remaining two Book of the Iron Fist stand alone issues. I read the future story in the floppies but the Li Park story was new to me and great. Solid volume, better than much of the current Marvel output. The only down side comes when you hold it up against the Fraction/Brubaker run. For my money Iron Fist has been the best comic Marvel's put out for a long time and I encourage you all to experience it's wonder in trades.

Fantastic Four: Simonsons v3 Well the volume starts with 3 issues of Art Adams artwork that even Al Milgrom's inks couldn't ruin but the curse of AM takes issue 350 down with it. Essential X-Factor v3 en route from Amazon. More Art Adams guest art work - yay ! More Al Milgrom inking vandalism of artwork - boo ! In fact this volume contains the origin of my dislike of his work......

A quick count up reveals I've bought 29 new trades this year - with a 30th allegedly being sent this week - and 3 older volumes. Of the 29 Nine volumes were eseentials.
How many have you bought and what were your faves ?

Didn't buy many this year due to being skint, but I reckon Essential Thor volume 4 brought me the most joy.

Didn't obtain a huge amount myself either this year. But of what I did buy I would have to single out the Walt Simonson Thor trades (vols 3 and 5) as being the best of what I did invest in.

Essential X-Factor v3 IS Essential X-Factor v3 the worst Essential volume ever ? Discuss.
Well for a start the redesigned cover is still using the original logo which is only on the first 9 issues - surely an oppotune moment to update it to the one used throughout this volume.
X-Factor Annual 3's never been reprinted, all good here - except for the absence of the High Evoloutionary saga pages (also removed from UXM Annual 12 in EXMv9.
Then we have Inferno. These issues are inidvidually traded and in EXMv9 so the value for money here feels poor. It's also where Al Milgrom's inking shows up - compare with the first 2 Simonson pencilled issues in this volume that Bob Wiaceck inks and the quality drops away.
A very early (earliest ?) Liefield Marvel issue is followed by a superb 2 part Art Adams drawn story. Nothing wrong here.
We then get to a horrible over long stuck on an alien planet story. I remember this coming out in floppies and being horrified by it - it went on forever and was soooo boring. It looks awful too! Closer examination shows it's drawn by Paul Smith (also responsible for UXM 165-170, 172-175 & XM/Alpha Flight which is some of the best art ever). So has Smith changed his style or was it massacred by the aforementioned Milgrom inks ? Well Smith later pencils another UXM and that looks more like what came before so I'm tempted to say the latter especially as every so often there's a flash of what you know Paul Smith can do coming through.
You can almost safely leave this if you're not an avid X-Factor fan. There's another colour trade with the Art Adams issues in somewhere.
(worse art is to come: the X-Factor issues of X-Tinction agenda are looming on the horizon. Maybe not the next volume (a reprint of Days of Future present *should* save us, but probably the one after. You have been warned. Thankfully that should also have the Portacio stuff in too which is great !)

Marvel TPB listings available into June, though the new pickings look very poor: PaperbackHarbackNo Essential, the only decent older material in pbk is Power Pack 2 (must order v1, several Amazon sellers have it cheaper than Amazon itself) and the only newer volume I want is the Hercules one. A cheap month. Hopefully they'll be some Essential goodness on the next listing and (Please Lord) Alpha Flight Classic 2.

Also picked up from FPE were vols 1 and 4 of Thor Simonson meaning I at last have the full run. I plan to read through the whole lot in order soon! -Ralph Volume 1 was superb. I read an issue a night before bed. I had only read some of the issues in it before and overall it was a thrilling read. The build-up to Surter's return is superbly paced. Currently re-reading volume 2. -Ralph

I need more old comics reprints.
So I ordered Classic Deadpool 2 and Classic Power Pack 1 from Amazon sellers cheaper than Amazon itself and then got Classic Deadpool 3 from Amazon.
Never read the first 3 issues of Power Pack, got 4 in the boxes here somewhere.

I have the splendid The Muppet Show trade by Roger Langridge winging it's way to me just now.
I also recommend Chew volume 1. Ralph had been harping on at me to get it. Well worth it.

Yeah, pretty happy with that. I've had a flick through in store and it looks really well done, and I've never read the Dave Thorpe stuff. With bank holidays and the like, it will be a couple of weeks before I get it, but very much looking forward to it. When my old CB paperback trades are retrieved from storage they shall be given away so that others may know the joy of the Captain.

"We are the Revolution."
Captain Britain Omnibus ordered. I'm glad I didn't go looking for it yesterday when I was in Middlesborough or this afternoon when I was changing trains in Newcastle!
That is a very good price for a very good chunk of comics.
I seem to be on a bit of a Captain-themed thing at the moment. I have just got myself a couple of Captain America Trades:- "The Burden of Dreams" and "The man who bought America". Top stuff - Brubaker really does have fantastic way of using the heritage of the character in a way that feels really relevant to today. The Red Skull/ Lukin's plan feels like the sort of thing that could conceivably work and some of the character stuff feels very real. (The story arc with Sharon Carter is genuinely disturbing in places).
It is wonderfully put together - the moment when James Buchanan Barnes clicks into place properly as Cap for the first time feels so satisfying because the reader really buys into the reality of his struggle to fill those shoes. Cracking stuff. I think next year is the year that I end up buying a lot more of Bru's Captain America run.

What of it have you read Karl ?
If anyone hasn't read Winter Soldier you can get both volumes for £6 and a bit each at Amazon. There's also a very good Omnibus of the first 25 issues of the Brubaker run for £36 which includes the House of M issue and the Winter Solider Civil War special

Read the stuff that is in the two Winter Soldier and Red Menance trades. I'm currently trying to piece together which order the various other trades are in so that I can pick them up. (I do wish Amazon entries were more useful for telling which trade follows which!)

Balls! I had forgotten Royal Mail lost their contract with Amazon. Order being sent via courier. I hope they leave packages at RM sorting offices or I'll never get it. -Ralph Got my 'you weren't in' card today. Unfortunately, the courier that Amazon use is causing a problem. Why? Their depot is not actually in Edinburgh. It's in an industrial estate...in Livingston, which is some considerable distance away...put it this way, the one time I had to go to Livingston for a work thing it took longer than it takes to get from Edinburgh to Glasgow. Add on finding an industrial estate and you're looking at a 2 hours + round trip. As I am usually at work I'm not in to receive packages during the day so rely on getting stuff from a RM sorting office. This lot don't put their packages there...so I can't actually get Amazon deliveries unless I'm on annual leave so in to get stuff. So Amazon won't be getting any more business from me*. Ah well. I'll get my books elsewhere then. -Ralph *And the courier they use for free deliveries has never been able to deliver to me at 3 addresses.

Even better, after checking, the depot is off a motorway so unless you have a car...
Even better, I got another 'you weren't in' card this morning. I was in, and the buzzer did not go, nor was there a knock at the door. I phoned up the number on the card, but the number comes up as not recognised.
Amazon can fuck right off. A bookseller that cannot deliver books to me does not get my money. I just hope I get my £145 back for this order.
If anyone can recommend other online bookstores, please let me know!

I use play.com a lot for comic collections, they are usually pretty good, through the packaging isn't as good as Amazon so it is a bit of a gamble sometimes.
We all know my feelings on Forbidden Planet's packing of course!

I've just had the same disappointment as Ralph. Large parcel which I think is my new DVD player tried to deliver itself today by 'City Link' but I wasn't in. The automated service offers redelivery tomorrow, Thursday, Friday or Monday, otherwise I have to collect it myself from somewhere out of town. After five days it is returned to sender. No option of speaking to a human being to discuss the fact that I don't drive and am working during the day, and busy all day Saturday. Absolutely terrible service. Come back, Royal Mail, all is forgiven!
I want my parcel, so I'll take the morning off tomorrow if I can, and if they don't manage to redeliver it then I'll have to try to get a train out to the depot one evening. But that's the last bulky item I order from Amazon.

Yep, City Link is the offending company here too.
I'm trying to find somewhere on amazon where I can email them to let them know their choice of courier has lost a long-term customer. That you can't pick up your parcels in the Scottish (and now Welsh) capitals is mind-staggering.
