I've just read Daredevil: The Devl's Hand, the first volume written by Andy Diggle. It starts OK with The List issue we looked at in The List trade. However it goes down hill drastically after there sinking into Japanese secret society politics and as far away from everything that made the Brubaker volumes good. I'm not sure I want to read any more.

Just got my JLIv1 trade and I'm amazed at how bad the paper is in it compared to my Marvel trades.

The paper quality in DC trades is shit. Just shit.
In Oxfam today, I found the trade of Robocop V Terminator. Some damp damage but readable. I remember it being mental. Frank Miller/Walt Simonson combo crazyness!

It is indeed top notch and the quality of DC trade stock is shockingly bad.

God yes, DC trades are either on quasi-newsprint or fragile wafer-thin rippable paper. Dammit DC

They have yet to learn how to run a good trade programme. Marvel's trade programme is vastly superior: multiple price-points/editions, decent quality paper and almost everything they put out gets traded so if you missed it in single issues you can usually get it.
It boggles the mind that DC's high-end expensive HC's have shit paper, nevermind the cheaper paperbacks. And it's somewhat random what gets traded.

My realm of Kings HC (ordered when it was hideously mispriced at Amazon) has just showed. I expect this to be a "one read and then on eBay's altar" job Realm of Kings HC: Contains RoK One Shot, RoK: Inhumans 1-5, RoK: Imperial Guard 1-5 and RoK: Son of Hulk: 1-4. Finally finished it. The one shot is some alternate earth nonsense with Quasar, I don't like the Inhumans at all so didn't take to this segment, the Imperial Guard stuff was actually rather good and Son of Hulk left me cold even though Commander Rann & Marionette were in it. Your mileage may vary. At £30 I would have been unhappy. But at a tenner it was worth a read. Off to eBay's altar unless I get a good offer for it by PM or email by Monday.

Courtesy of the library, I have now read Star Trek: Year Four and Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire. Both were competant but barely register in my memory scant hours after reading them.

An infinitely better read from the library has been Northlanders Volume 1: Sven has Returned.
In AD980 a viking returns to Orkney. His uncle has killed his father and has taken over his lands that are his birthright but the viking doesn't give a toss. He just wants the money owed to him so he can piss off back to the more exciting life he has overseas in exotic lands. Which is infinitely more interesting than the usual cliched 'You stole my birthright!' bollocks we see so often. Pleasingly, the reader is left to their own devices as to whether the lead character, Sven, is a 'goodie' or a 'baddie'. Sometimes he is surprisingly nobel, at other points astonishingly vindictive. It's a fine line to walk, doing that kind of character, but the writing is deft enough that you're always interested in what Sven is thinking when the tale could easily have devoled into reading about a one-dimensional psychopath (hello, Transformers: Drift #1, I'm looking at you). It's gripping stuff.
The art and colouring are spot-on. You can feel the cold and see the dampness of the mists. Very atmospheric, and during pages with little text the words are very very well chosen.
And what's nice is that though the cover says 'volume 1', you do get an involved story with a beginning, middle and end: something very few collected series bother to do properly.
Well worth checking out.

This week, from the library:
Wolverine: Weapon X. The Marvel comics Barry Windsor-Smith mini rather than the ten zillion other Weapon X trades. One of those stories that is referenced so often it felt like I had read it even though I hadn't. It's a strange tale. It has a certain hallucinatory quality and dry wit to it that I liked but when it was revealed a big chunk of it in which many important things happened had merely been an illusion I wanted to throw it against the wall. And the epilogue was utterly pointless. Ah well. Comes so close to goodness but ultimately a waste of time.
Captain Britain and MI:13 vol 3: Vampire State. Absolutely superb. Flawless. Genuinely tense and thrilling, exceptionally well paced, lovely ending, sharp dialogue. Lesser series would have got six issues alone out of 'Dracula launches vampires at Earth from his castle on the moon', but that's just a third of an issue here as it has many tricks up its sleaves. Recommended. It's just fantastic.
