Picked up Civil War: Captain America on a whim yesterday. Enjoyable as previous volumes if perhaps not working as well as a trade, suffers from being hampered by the ongoing Civil War story. Marvel really need to get their act together with the Brubaker Cap trades though. They are not numbered or follow a common subtitle so it is difficult to know what order they go in and when they are out. This is the 5th volume of the run, but you'll find no indication of this in the actual book.
But anyway, good stuff. Captain America remains easily the best book Marvel are putting out currently. Continues to feel modern while still having that old 'fun' Marvel vibe.

The Winter Soldier one shot collected herein is a superb story. Meeting the Young Avengers and then those superb scenes with Namor at the end.

I meanwhile have read New Excalibur: Battle for Eternity. Bought because I hesitated cancelling the floppies cos the Nocturn stroke story (pts 1 & 2 within) was good.
However it goes downhill rapidly after that. Typical Claremont nonsense. Avoid

I have once again broken my promise to only buy new stuff I like in trades (Captain America) and bought 6 Iron Fist issues off eBay this week cos I wasn't patient enough to wait for the next trade !
Can I also ask for 3 issues of All Star Superman bought in December to be taken into account ?

Flicked through Essential Iron Fist and Power-Man in FP today. Oh, I was tempted, the cheese wafting off it was strong. I resisted by virtue of not having any spare cash currently but I know that one day, far in the future, it shall be procured for it has this mind-blowing issue.-Ralph

Yes indeed. I have fond memories of early Alpha Flight from when it was the back-up strip in Secret Wars UK. I am unable to see past the sheen of nostalgia! The Master Of All The World still puts the shits up me, just like when I was 6!

In other collected edition related news my long sort Birth of the Hobgoblin trade showed yesterday. Several of the issues were in the first batches of comics my Dad brought us home from work ( I'll recount the Philip's comic story later) but I'd never got to the end of the story. This is good stuff especially compared to recent SM offerings. Shame some of the material is a little edited. Will sit nicely beside the Birth of Venom volume

Fletcher Hanks "I Shall Destroy All The Civilised Planets" is quite simply the most bat-shit mental golden age material I have ever read.
It needs to be done in small doses though. Absolute madness.
Folks who live in their own personal star and are fascist god-heroes, a crazy jungle woman who is just as fascistic. Points off for not living in a star.
Well worth reading, at least once.

June's TPBs are up at Amazon UK. Ralph can order his Classic Alpha Flight V2 and Marvel team Up v3 at the same time. And try not to spill any beer on the latter this time.

Couple of interesting trades on the horizon from Marvel. Some of the War Machine era Iron Man being collected, which I'll get along with the collection of Waid's original Captain America run.

The last few weeks I've been pondering which old comics to read next. So en route to Phil towers we have some essential FF and Spiderman volumes.

I'm looking forward to it. I'd only said above I was going to buy some and lo and behold this pops up. Interestingly the FF Volumes have shipped from Play but the EASM hadn't. So that got cancelled. So instead of one volume for £8.49 that's 5 for £22
There's 3 more FF volumes out (1 forthcoming), 3 more ASM volumes, 3 Spectacular SM volumes, 2 Marvel Team Up (1 forthcoming) and 2 Marvel Two In One I'd lilke - 13 out and 3 forthcoming. Eek.

Score!
Phil, do you have of the Essential Iron Fist and/or Power Man releases? I haven't read any of it yet, but I ordered Iron Fist volume 1 when it suddenly occured to me that it was Claremont and Bryne pre Uncanny ie when they were good.

Yup. Not so keen on E Power Man but the single E Iron Fist volume is class. All the Byrne/Claremont is in the E IF volume, with only the first few issues of PM/IF being written by CC.
Working my way through E PM/IF at the mo.

I've read a crazy amount of Claremont stuff recently, finally got around to reading the Uncanny Omnibus, New Mutants Classic volume 2, all of Excalibur Classic released so far. I'm even finding New Excalibur surprisingly enjoyable.
