Thanks to a stroke of luck in the new LCS in Swindon and a bit of good fortune on eBay I now own Kyle & Yost's New X-Men which I've been after for AGES and goes for a few pennys - look on Amazon. I've been wanting to read these for a while because several of the characters and plotlines turn up in Kyle & Yost's X-Force which, when not incolced in a crossover, I thought was the best X-comic since Morrisson. These issues were really great. Yes I still haven't a firm grip on some of the characters powers but thae stories told are superb. Decimation is dealt with properly here, Stryker (not admitedly a favourite character) is brought back and Nimrod (who is one of my fave X-Villains and cruelly unused) also returns. Some of the later issues suffer a little: firstly by having to provide a plot element for the Messiah Complex crossover and then by some art that's a little different in style to the rrest of the series. Well worth a read, if you can find them cheap, the first three volumes especially. Marvel: Ultimate Collections now please.

New Mutants Classic v6 (collects New Mutants 41-44, NM Annual 2, X-Men Annual 10 & NM 45-47) 41-45 are a bunch of, occasionally solo, teen related tales. Very worthy I'm sure but it forgets that we are meant to be reading a superhero book. Fortunately in the middle we get NM Annual 2 (drawn by Alan Davis) & X-Men Annual 10 (Art Adams) both of which are superb and, I think, recieving their first US colour reprint here. They introduce Captain Britain, Psylocke, Mojo, Spiral & Longshot to the X-Men as well as giving the genesis to the X-Babies concept. Top stuff, though I'd have placed them after NM45 in the book. 46 is the Mutant Massacre crossover which leads into Magus, on Earth since X-Men 192, pursuing them to Limbo setting up the storyline that takes us, in the next volume, through to issue 50. Art on the regular issues is variable throughout depending on who's inking Guice: Kyle Baker's work doesn't do it for me.
So a mixed bag. Really looking forward to the next volume which has that fab story through to 50, Claremont's last work on the regular title and New Mutants annual 3: More Alan Davis, a guest appearance by the old Forbidden Planet 1 and one of Ralph's "favourite" Marvel characters....

Essential Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man volume 5 (collects PP,TSS-M 97-114 & Annual 5) was a game of 3 parts. 97-110 collect the end of the Black Cat/Kingpin story seen in the previous volume and really should have been shoe horned in there. We then get a number of fill in issues including some Byrne covers (101 & 102 - look on eBay) and an issue of Mantlotainment (103). After that Peter David takes over and the feel of the title changes. Out go almost anything superhero (with the exception of Spider-Man himself) with David telling a succsesion of stories with a "real world" theme. Occasional stories like this, yes but a whole run of them? The only other super powered characters we see are Daredevil, during the 4 part Death of Jean DeWolfe, and The Beyonder & Puma in a Secret Wars II crossover that you suspect was forced on them. Yes it gives the titles some identity in a world also featuring Amazing and Web Of but I'm not sure they're the sort of Spider-Man stories I want to be reading. Essential Web Of 1 is due soon so I'll be interested to see what sort of stories that does in a post Marvel Team Up world. Now that book did have a good identity and also served to give Spider-Man fans, always a large part of Marvel's market, a view of other characters who's books they might want to buy....
Steve Rogers: Super Soldier Someone's salvaged the Super Soldier serum and wants to sell it .... Not a bad story and ties into Secret Avengers. Decent work from Brubaker.

I'm always a bit disappionted when the Essentials stop being 20 issues of the regular book, and start being 8 issues of the regular book, a couple of crossover issues, an annual, a mini-series etc. But needs to be done I suppose.

A surprise in Essential Web of Spider Man v1: from Annual 2 an Art Adams drawn tale I'd not read. And as a bonus, from the same annual, there's another story drawn by Mike Mignola.

Essential Web of Spider Man Volume 1 Collecting WEB OF SPIDER-MAN (1985) #1-18 and ANNUAL #1-2, and AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (1963) #268. An odd mixed bag with 4 authors on the main title and a rotating art team. I read 1 as a child (and PPtSSM 100 which it follows on from) and loved it but I can't remember reading any others. I'd definitely nor read Web of 6 or ASM 268 which form a Secret Wars II crossover.... of sorts. There's a fab Combined cover which I'd never realised before. In fact the covers are frequently the best thing here. Charles Vess' painitng for issue 1 i've seen lauded but his cover for issue 8 (used as The cover for the book) is even better, especially the black & white version found inside. There's also a nice selection of Byrne covers too (including the aforementioned combined pair above) which are fine by me. You feel Web is struggling to find it's identity as the third Spiderman book. It's not got the prominance of Amazing and lacks the distinctiveness of Marvel Team Up, which it replaced and I loved which biases me against Web Of. Plus any book that promises "daring new adventures in mystery & suspense" and then does a 2 parter using C-List villain Magma really has no idea. But despite this we get the wonder of Web Of annual 2. Re;leased the same year as New Mutants Annual 2 & X-Men Annual 10 it's Written by Ann Nocenti the main story features New Mutant Warlock rampagoing through Manhattan and some superb Art Adams art which I'd not seen before. The B story has Mike Mignola art so that can't be bad either. I'd never seen it before so was well pleased and it's easily the highlight of the book.

The HC took up to much room. Therefore I must have this:
SECRET WARS II TPB Written by JIM SHOOTER Penciled by AL MILGROM Cover by ED MCGUINNESS Last time Earth’s heroes encountered the Beyonder, they fought for their lives. This time, they fight for all existence! A year after kidnapping the most powerful beings on Earth and pitting them against one another in a “Secret War” on a distant world, the omnipotent Beyonder comes to Earth to continue his study of humanity. However, a being so powerful and so naïve is a dangerous combination. As the Beyonder’s understanding slowly grows, so too do his own desires — and even the lord of lies, Mephisto, fears what the Beyonder might finally decide he desires. Because if the Beyonder decides he wants to end all that is, even the combined might of the universe’s cosmic powers might not be enough to stop him! Collecting SECRET WARS II #1-9. 264 PGS./Rated T ...$29.99 ISBN: 978-0-7851-5830-1
In other news, December also brings new printings of Essential FF 2 and 3. Good, for I lost my old copies to damp damage.
