Did you read beyond the UK issues Karl? Yep. Alpha Flight was one of my "on-again-off-again" US titles, so I have read a swathe of Mantlo stuff, and past that around the "What do we do with fifteen Alphans" stuff. Karl

How about the post SW UK Byrne issues ? 11 - 28? As I recall (it is a while ago now and I have some holes in my memory...) I don't think I was able to pick up many, if any of those at the time. (Not being carried on UK newstands I was limited to what I could obtain on my occassional voyages to Glasgow). Karl

I'm pretty certain all Alpha Flight issues - bar the double sized ones - were sold on UK newstands up until the point (c issue 50) when US Marvel stopped being distributed here. 5, 14, 20 & 21 certainly were.

Well, they weren't available in Stirling then (mind you, distribution was pretty spotty - mostly just X-Men related titles with one newsagent also carrying either Avengers or WCA depending on how the mood took it). My experience down south is that newsagents generally got a big bundle of Marvel comics which they had no control over what was in. ASM, PPTSSM, MTU/Web Of, Marvel Tales, X-Men, New Mutants, Cap, Thor, Iron Man, Avengers, WCA, Alpha Flight, Conan, Daredevil, Rom, PMIF, Defenders..... rarely any of the double sized anniversary issues. Never licenced stuff like Star Wars, GI Joe and Transformers. Never Limited series either.
Anyway finished AF Classic 2. Just need to polish the write up off.

Trial of Captain America: usual quality stuff. Master Man shows up. You can't beat Cap vs Nazis.
Invincible Iron Man 6: Better than the previous volume, good to see Rescue back in action. In fact this volume was virtually team Iron Man.
Invincible Iron Man 7: Cracking stuff. The annual with the Mandarin trying to have a movie made about his life but interfering creatively was great, the .1 issue with Tony at AA recaping the classic Iron 160-200 was SUPERB - I raved about the story last year and it's great to see someone else show some love for it. Fab moment where Tony discovers what happened with Pepper that he'd forgotton due the mind wiping. How I Met Your Mother is superb story helping to explain Stane's motivation for his part. Issue 500 afterwards half a Spider Man team up where Peter tries to not reveal his identity/half a future story is the weakest point of the book but is still pretty decent. Well worth a look this volume.

S.H.I.E.L.D. Architects of Forever (S.H.I.E.L.D. 1-6): Loved it so much that I imeadiately read it again. Fab. This is the sort of comic I want to read with it's past settings sort of reminding me of the dear departed Immortal Iron Fist. Spider-Man/Red Sonja: Why I bought this book: It reprints Marvel Team Up 79 which is fabulous Claremont/Byrne/Austin work having Sonja possess Mary-Jane Watson. The HC had been talking to me every time I saw it cheap - I can't see MTU 79 in the up & coming Byrne/Claremont MTU trade (rights issues for Red Sonja ?) - so when I found the soft cover also cheap I lept at a chance to get it. The Limited Series is what you'd expect Kulan Gath shows up and does his stuff transforming New York into the Hyborian age and MJ into Sonja. Two complaints: The limited series depends on you having read MTU 79 so why is MTU 79 printed after the LS? The limited series doesn't make any referance to Kulan Gath's *first* attempt at Revenge (Uncanny X-Men 190 & 191): it'd be nice to have got a colour reprint of those issues too.

SHIELD is great, though the bi-monthly schedule killed it dead in single issue form. I'll pick it up again when there are a few trades out.

Given Marvel's recent policy of killing titles not meeting minimum sales levels I'm not convinced it'll be tolerated for that long.

The 2nd series is only a 6 issue mini, so depends on how well that does as to whether there'll be a 3rd.

I loved the first S.H.I.E.L.D mini - there was some fantastically epic-scaled stuff in there, and it was doing such a wonderful job of playing with the history of the Marvel universe that I couldn't help but love it. Lost track of the second mini due to it being bi-monthly, and my decision to drop getting most floppies in advance of my eventual digital migration.
I think I am going to get it in trade in due course though, probably around the time I replace the floppies of the original series with the trade.

Vote Siege!!! ;D (Seriously, not just 'cosa my Sentry obsession.) Avengers Assemble, vol 5. Avengers Assemble as I'm sure you'll know gather the Kurt Busiek run on Avengers, pre Disassembled. Vol 5 features the whole Kang Dynasty arch, it arrived to me last week. Think I read it in two days. Freakin' brilliant. Took me two days 'cos of children, wives and DIY, otherwise I may have got through it in one. Just a great great enormic story, with equally great art. Issue 49, 'There are no Words' is a masterpiece, a complete masterpiece, with terrible consequences. Guna look out for more in this series. They look great on the bookcases-that-define-me-as-a-person.

I'm in trouble though, for buying too many oversized Marvel hardcovers! I'm collecting them! They're displayed on the bookcases-that-define-me-as-a-person! I think I'm going for a chronological sequence of sorts from pre Disassembled, through to Siege, and then BEYOND!!! Avengers and Fantastic Four focused. Avengers Assemble vol 5 arrived last week, contains the whole Kang Dynasty arch. Bloody marvelous! The issue 'There are no words' blow my pants off. I'm cross that there is no omnibus of Straczynski's run on F4, though. I have the TPB and it's a bloody good stuff. Birthday comming up (AAAARRRGH!!! NOOOO!!! SO OLD!!!), so hope to bag a few more for my collection! Eh, poor ol' Mrs Shockprowl! Straczynski FF is Poo. Buy the Byrne FF Omnibuses.

I should go back and read that Kang story at some point. In those pre-decompressed days it irritated by seemingly going on forever, despite being decently done. I could swear the Kang war still continues. I wonder if it reads better in a collected edition.

Generaly decent, though the interminable Triune Understanding sub-plot tried my patience, as did Triathalon! The Ultron War story is amazing.

Yeah I'm after vol 2 (ULTRON!!!), crazy expensive on Amazon. Where you getting yours from, Big Phil (naturally I'm after oversized hardcover for the bookcases-that-define-me-as-a-person!). kang Dynasty reads very well as a collection. Takes a while to get going, but when it does it blow my pants off. Then again I am easily pleased. Triathalon doesn't do a great deal for me, but he got kinda interesting towards the end. I can see why it would feel like it went on for ages in single issue form, it's a freakin' long story!
