Also I do like the fact that Cyclops has a wedding trade on his own. Does this mean we are compiling the marriages to Madelyne and Jean in one trade. Awkward!

Good result in the library today. Essential Captain America vol 6 (feat the tail-end of Kirby's utterly demented 70's run) and the first two albums of Asterix. Long time since I've read them and I look forward to reacquainting myself with the material.

DWM - The Crimson Hand.
Damn good book. Really loved the 10th Doctor era for strips. Dan McDaid and Rob Davis' The Deep Hereafter was the highlight for me.

Just finished Strikeforce Morituri vol 1. Very good comics, it's nice to read superhero comics where nothing feels safe - not only is there not a stable status quo, but a return to an earlier one is also off the cards and it's all built into the concept. Refreshing!

Andy Don't have the trade of that as yet, but it is one I must add to the ever-lengthening "must buy" list. I read a lot of those strips on a monthly basis in DWM and they were cracking stuff - my first port of call in the magazine on the way to work on the Friday morning. Karl |

To be honest, I gave up on the strip when it got to the 10th Doctor. It's never been the same for me since the 8th Doctor strip finished its run.

The Batman elseworld Crimson Mist (3rd in the vampire series by Doug Moench and Kelley Jones for £1.99 in Oxfam today. Forgot how much I loved Kelley Jones art. One of my favourite Batman artists.

Iron Man - Iron Monger - this storyline has long been a gap in my Iron Man reading, so great to get to it at last even if I knew roughly how the Stane story went. It's very good, very mid-80s Marvel, work. I always did like the geodesic dome, Silicon Valley start-up set-up, and the the writing makes good use of the technical / corporate aspect of the title. Tony's "working out ideas through his armour" made perfect sense to me.
It also ties in neatly with the WCA volumes I've been reading lately, it's nice to see such light-touch interconnectedness.
If I have a complaint it's that there are loose ends which are presumably picked up in subsequent issues but seem quite glaring in the way these issues are collected. That's a bit of an unavoidable risk with superhero comics of the time which aren't being written for the trade or in discrete arcs, though, and it's not going to be hard to look that stuff up or find the back-issues.

I've read quite a few of them, probably most, back when I was a teenager and was slave to what FP Nottingham had in their back-issue area. Always had other priorities on back-issue hunts in more recent years though, so only finally got to it by finding this HC cheap.
One day I plan on reading all of Iron Man from the beginning through to the end of Kaminski's run. Just from the random runs here and there I've read it must be one of the more consistently good titles Marvel have produced.

On reflection from reading this volume, it does seem to be the run which best balances the things I like about Iron Man comics.
There's a fun run somewhere around the 70s/80s that I liked, though I couldn't name a writer or artist for it off the top of my head.
I'm also fond of Byrne's stint as writer, even if it is a bit grim. Armor Wars II and the Dragon Seed Saga were robbed by going straight to Premiere Classic SC rather than HC. Armor Wars II also features some of my favourite JRJR art; I don't know if it's mostly down to the inking and old-school colouring, but I find it much more expressive than his recent work.

GOOD DOG, BAD DOG arrived today. only had chance for a quick look but seems to be a winner. Reprints the run from THE DFC. Hopefully a volume of THE PHOENIX strips may follow. Like Frontier, beautiful presentation. I can see myself picking up the other books of strips from the late THE DFC.

I was happy to take mine along on FCBD to get it signed and eagerly anticipate Horizon. While I haven't been liking his covers to the UK Classics volumes, Wildman is producing some fine work (not that he didn't back in the day).

New Mutants Classic v7 (collects 48-54 & annual 3) a bit of a game of two halves: first two issues, Each displaying a different alternate future, are good, but both are effectively build up for 50 which is the long awaited confrontation between Warlock and his father Magus and our first meeting with Professor Xavier since X-Men 200. Huge battle, Starjammers, one of my favourite issues of the title and one I had to hunt for at the time because my LCS didn't get enough. Fab Guice art. 51 is a follow on which returns the kids to Earth without Xavier then we get Annual 3: Warlock vs The Impossible Man. Fab Alan Davis art, ensuring Andu will buy this volume, but I have a big problem with the ending: Warlock cannot change colour at will! He changes colour to show ow much energy he has left as shown elsewhere in the volume. From thereon in Claremont's phoning it in having obviously lost interest and 54 is his last issue on the title.
Mixed bag. But worth it for first half and annual art, which includes the original Forbidden Planet, inside and out, just as I remember it.

Yay! Finished West Coast Avengers: Sins Past last week. Such a fun series, but not without bite - strong character drama, especially for Henry Pym and that final page. Milgrom was the perfect artist for this as well. Only weak spot for me was the annual story in the middle, especially the Fingeroth-penned chapter. And also for Englehart's Avengers fans, the Serpent Crown HC has just dropped below half price on Amazon. |
