Also been reading lately Essential X-Factor, great stuff, the original Secret Wars, I had no idea what to expect but was reasonably entertained throughout, Barry Windsor Smith's Weapon X story from Marvel Comics Presents, which I actually didn't like that much - maybe I need to reread it, but I was really confused near the start where all the characters in the lab seem to be dumbfounded at the idea of Wolverine being a mutant, _after_ they put the adamantium in. I always assumed they put the adamantium in because of his massive healing factor! Also, a large part of the narrative is revealed to be essentially a dream sequence at the end which licked balls.
I think we've mentioned before about how certain artists look better in B&W. Well I'm making my way through Essential Avengers 6 at the mo. I previously had some of the issues in Avengers: Celestial Maddonna. No contest, John Buscema's art looks far better in B&W, it looked sloppy (poor reprint colouring ?) in the earlier trade but the Essential looks superb.
Still trying to make headway with EFF1. Some good stuff in it, even if the style is an adjustment. amazing at how many of the early villains are still household names at Marvel: Mole Man, Doom, Sub Mariner, Skrulls, Rama Tut, Mad Thinker & his Awesome Android, Impossible Man.
1) Invisible Girl is written so appallingly it's untrue. Dialogue like "Oh Read, forgive me for being emotional" and "my feminine intuition" is very, very dated. Yes I know this was the 60s but I expected better
2) Kirby's art only really makes it when Joe Sinott shows up to ink in issue 44 . After that it's wonderous.
Finally got round to reading volume 2 of DC: The New Frontier on loan from Andy. Superb stuff, shame so much of the shading and context that are needed for large parts of the story to make sense were cut from the animated version. Both versions of the story are pretty good, but the original pulped dead wood version is easily the superior one.
The Order: Next Right Thing um..... I might be talking sacrligously but I'm not really seeing what everyone's going on about. Sure the framing device (of everyone being interviewed) is good but I'm not getting much out of the ordinary from it.....
In other news, Essential Captain America vol 1 finally got a reprint. Oh, it's glorious. Stan Lee madness at its peak, aided by King Kirby and others. The sleeper awakens! The first Batroc story! The Red Skull origin, which is crazy bat-shit mental in the extreme! Captain America constantly mooning over Bucky! Hilarious WWII adventures with Evil Nazis who shout "Himmel!" a lot.
