HR FF wasn't bad. I am one of the few folk who also really enjoyed Claremont's run on FF thereafter, though he does bugger off rather abruptly. Had he stayed on and saw some of his plotlines to conclusion it could have been one of the golden runs. Worth it for the 'Reed trapped in Doom's armour' plot. That was brilliant. I also really like Pier 4 as the HQ and its connection to Doctor Who (heavily implied it's based on tech provided by The Doctor). Haven't read it since though, so no idea how it holds up.

I saw the new reprint of the original ALIEN adaptation in FP today. I have long being intrigued by it and have never found a copy of the original. It's genuinely rare and goes for stupid money. The new edition is in colour and the repro looks really good and its printed in an oversized format.
There is also a B&W 'Artists Edition' coming out so I'll wait to see that before deciding which version to pick up.

Just finished Avengers: Serpent Crown HC by Englehart and Perez. Good fun, interesting background after just recently reading Lost in Space Time. Englehart is rapidly becoming one of my all time favourites, I love how he can effortlessly weave together super-heroes, soap, social commentary and cosmic craziness.
Prior to this year I'd read the Celestial Madonna collection and something else that escapes me, but now I want to track it all down.

New stock in at various discount book stores in London, picked up Fantastic Four: In Search Of Galactus for Ă‚ÂŁ7 and a Vertigo collection of a Jason Aaron / Cameron Stewart Vietnam war story for Ă‚ÂŁ2 (I'd never heard of it). Stacks of Nick Fury vs. SHIELD for a tenner, tempted as the Neary art looks lovely but I've heard the story is a mess.

Secret Avengers: Fear Itself: bit of a mess really. first two volumes were much better.

I did like the first two Secret Avengers books, will probably get the collection of the Ellis one offs as it just sounds like Global Frequency with Avengers. Not a bad thing.

For my money, the best volume of all is the Warren Ellis one. All done-in-ones which tie to a loose overarching plot, with different artists selected appropriately. It's a little bit uneven, but when it's good it's great - I particularly enjoyed the one focussing on the Black Widow saving a mission-gone-wrong through an emergency time travel device*.
*that's not a spoiler, as it happens at the start - what would be a spoiler would be just how cleverly she does it!

I love done in one comics. We don't get enough of them these days which is a crying shame. I loved Global Frequency as it was a new story and new artist each month. Some were better than others but where else could you get a book with the likes of Jon J Muth, Steve Dillon, Garry Leach and The Biz coming in and out to tell a story.

Yep, the erraticness of Global Frequency was part of the charm. Every issue was guaranteed to be different to the last one - it wasn't guaranteed that you would like it but you knew that you would be getting something new every issue.
Great idea.

Marvel Graphic Novel Collections latest are Daredevil: Born Again and the first volume of the Dan Slott She-Hulk run. Quite different, and both in their own ways thoroughly enjoyable.

what I really don't get is the continued popularity of those Grimm Fairy Tales books. Do people really buy those? I feel embarrassed walking just past the shelf... Yeah, they sell quite well. And if you find those embarrassing, try to never even glance at an issue of Jim Balent's Tarot.

I'm aware of Tarot, I recall reading quite a funny review thoroughly deconstructing an issue a couple of years ago.

Last night I read The Death of Captain Marvel for the first time in a very, very long time in premiere HC form.
I found it really very affecting. A true classic.

I do recommend buying a fixed version of it though. The Barr/Davis/Neary era of Batman is one sadly neglected. It has a light-hearted touch in places and was one of the last times you could say that about the Batbooks.

They are doing a recall so chances are we will get one.
Mind you it's not like DC don't have form. The original trade of Justice League by Giffen/DeMatteiss was released with part of issues 4 and 5 printed twice. Rerelease of trade in 2000's had the exact same error.

Read Avengers West Coast: Zodiac Attack this week; as fun as this era of AWC usually is. Moon Knight's bonkersness is an intriguing sub-plot, as is Mockingbird's dark secret - and it's neat that Englehart manages to intertwine the two in the subject of whether Avengers should ever kill.
There's some subtly clever stuff with the Zodiac and their programming to react exactly as their sign says they should become self-fulfilling (and ultimately self-defeating) prophecy.
Shame there won't be any more HC volumes, I really hope we at least get trades to close out the Englehart / Milgrom run or that the whole things is collected in Omnibuses.

Silver Surfer: Rebirth of Thanos HC was quite entertaining. Mostly stuff I read ages ago in comic form, but nice to revisit. First time I've read the Impossible Man issue, and to be honest it didn't work for me, not sure humour is Starlin's strongest point.
I wonder if as we get closer to Avengers 2 we'll see an Infinity Gauntlet omnibus collecting this, the mini-series and the most pertinent cross-over issues?

Essential Warlock Yeah the first half is hard going but the second half with Cosmic Jim on writing and art duties is superb. I suspect a lot of the subtext passed me by but I'll be back for further reads I think. I skipped the Annuals at the end in this trade cos I'd read them before in B&W Marvel UK Vision and in previous Essentials....
.... to read them in colour for the first time in Thanos: The Final Threat oooo yeah that's good. Looks fab..
I know others have already said but Secret Avengers: Run the Mission, Save the World rocks big time. 6 done in one stories. Superb. Makes up for the awful Secret Avengers Fear Itself.
