66. It's got the Hulk in it.
So if Essential Classic X-Men vol 2 reprinted up to 54, vol 3 won't just be 55-66. Here's hoping it has some of the guest appearances the X-Men made in various other titles before Giant Size #1 came out, and not Hidden Years, as that was rubbish.

Nearing the end of E ASM 2. My goodness Dikto could draw. His Spiderman illustrations are great, wouldn't look out of place today. One that lept out at me is a splash page of Spidey holding something up while water comes down him - looked fabulous.

Oooh the Romita ASM is good. Nice honest storytelling from Stan - simple stuff but it works. The art is brilliant - again quite simple but as soon as Spiderman puts his costume on it comes alive.
Brilliant stuff. If I'd have read this a few months back it would have got a favorite run nomination.

I do have an affection for Stan/Romita Spidey. Been ages since I read any Stan/Ditko Spidey: I recall being blown away by the craftmanship of the linework. Really must pick up some essential spidey at some point.

Just started working my way through "Essential Fantasti Four" vol 1 courtesy of Nick. Has an awful lot of charm to it, and has aged much better than the contemperanous DC stuff.
I also have discovered from this that the first Fantastic Four story I read (in a B&W Marvel UK Reprint called "Marvel Superheroes" along with a half-issue of George Perez Avengers and a half-issue of Godzilla) was in fact two-thirds of the very first appearance of Doctor Doom...... With material like that being pumped into my young brain it is no wonder I developed an affection for superheroes.

ASM volumes 1 and 2 are top notch stuff (now if only I could find mine). Steve Ditko truly made the character his own in his run. It's interesting to see JRSR match him a little in style early on but as the issues go on establish his own style.
JRSR's work on Spidey being much better than the work he did on the early issues of Daredevil he worked on. It just didn't gel for me.

The first FF I read was in a uk FF weekly (may even be an issue of the same title as Karl mentions). There's at least 2 stories in it. One is about some bikers and the aftermath of a battle with Dragon Man (FF 13something 136, i've found it in EFF6). The other is part of the first appearance of the Skrulls. May even have been a Defenders strip in there too.

The Stan and Jack FF run is required reading for all who love comics, for the sheer density of ideas per issue and sense of fun wafting off each page. I would argue it's best read in black-and-white: the art pops off the page more. Only some dated sexism lets the side down.
In other news, to celebrate finishing an essay I picked up Iron Man: Doomquest. Also, the Doctor Who Storybook 2008 for 99p. Woo.

New Mutants Classic 3 and Fallen Son: death of Captain America dropped onto the mat today.
NMC3 starts collecting the Bill Sienkiewicz issues. Comprises his first 2 storylines + NM Annual 1. If you're any sort of X-fan you'll get this.
I bought FS in floppies and then sold it for far more than the trade cost. I remember it being so so, but the issue in the middle with Hawkeye, Patriot and Hakeye II drawn by JR jr is fantastic,

Hopefully it picks up, but thus far it lacks the fun cheese of 60's Iron Man or the polish of later issue of the Micheline/Layton/Romita Jr run.
In other news, I see the Kree/Skrull War trade has had another reprint, though I do recommend Essential Avengers vol 4 over that, which has the same story in glorious black and white, is about 400 pages longer and about a fiver cheaper. I do love that period of The Avengers.

In E ASM V6. We had a sudden outbreak of Stan Lee "Female" a few issues back. Whoever used the word like that? Woman I could understand. To be fair on Stan his writing of women in ASM is much better than in FF !
