How are the first three volumes going for you? Let me get back to you on that after the bank holiday, OK? Martin - who read an X-Men comic many years ago in which Colossus' little sister died and only now realises why this was such a big deal to the fans... Did we get there?

Not quite... I thought I was making good progress on issue #1 until I was 25 pages into it and realised that it wasn't issue #1 at all but a prequel graphic novel. Just working my way through the first 12 issues, then I'll have read everything up to #73. I know it's silly but NM #13 was the jumping-on point in the X-Men pocketbooks. Have to say it feels like a slow start, knowing how the team shapes up later on, beginning without an alien Transformer and a sorceress teleporter with her own demon army on the team. They get to have more fun once those two turn up... Martin

They get to have more fun once those two turn up... Martin Yeah, they do bring a certain something to the table. I always loved Warlock's particular version of the "friendly, clumsy, outsider with a heart of gold(nanotech)" schtick, and I always loved Illyana's combination of sunny sense of humour with her roommate and terrifying "remember where I grew up" backbone to her enemies. Both of them have wonderfully idiosyncratic personalities. Must pick up New Mutants at some point, either digitally or physically. Karl

Still doing better than Excaliber on that front it seems.
I may see what I can do by way of combining pocket books with digital issues. I'm quite liking the idea of going for smaller format physical trades - it helps with the "I'm going to have to move this stuff someday" issue.

My 1980s X-Men / New Mutants collection basically consists of X-Men from the Brood Saga to Secret Wars II, and New Mutants for Illyana's complete run on the team:
Pocketbooks:

Regular TPBs:
X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills X-Men: Magik: Storm & Illyana reprints Uncanny X-Men #160 and Magik #1-4 New Mutants / X-Force: Demon Bear includes New Mutants #18-20 New Mutants Classic Volume 4 reprints New Mutants #26-34 New Mutants Classic Volume 5 reprints New Mutants #35-40, New Mutants Special Edition #1, X-Men Annual #9 New Mutants Classic Volume 6 reprints New Mutants #41-47, New Mutants Annual #2, X-Men Annual #10 New Mutants Classic Volume 7 reprints New Mutants #48-54, New Mutants Annual #3 X-Men: Fall of the Mutants Volume 1 includes New Mutants #55-61
Picked up NM #21-25 and #62-73 in floppies down Cardiff Indoor Market, and reading NM #1-12 in Phil's copies of NM Classic Volumes 1-2.
After that my Marvel mutant collection jumps back to X-Men and the oversized hardcovers with the start of Jim Lee's run.
It's great having missed the 1980s at the time and getting to enjoy it in the 2010s rather than have to slum it with modern-style comics!
Cardiff Indoor Market also yielded a like-new copy of IDW's Transformers Generations Volume 1 for £4 (containing Marvel US #7, #13-14, #16-18 with Nick Roche cover art). Amazing to see what quality reprints IDW can produce when it decides not to mess with the original colouring.

Scott Lang Ant Man: On Amazon £15.90 (was £15.40) Secured a copy today for £12.71 from Wordery on the eBay :-) Been looking forward to this, all of Scott Lang's early appearances in one volume But, Phil, Scott Lang was always pish (the main reason why I am struggling to be enthused about the upcoming Ant-Man film). It was great in Avengers Disassembled when he was fried. Always thought Cassie Lang was more interesting though I think she is currently dead. -Ralph

and Scott Lang was never Pish! Better Any Man than the original and has been Ant Man longer than the original ever was!
And no it wasn't great when he was fried in Disassembled!
He's great in Under Siege and it's a big shame he vanishes just after and yet Doctor F***ing Druid gets added to the Avengers!

Dr Druid is a Z list KO Doctor Strange nobody while Scott Lang was instrumental in defeating the Absorbing Man and Titania.
We'll have no more of this nonsense Burns. It's a fab book collecting all of his early appearance with some great art from Byrne, Perez and others.

'Ant-Man Prelude' TPB has arrived through my letterbox.
Contents:
Marvel's Ant-Man Prelude #1-2 Marvel's Ant-Man - Scott Lang: Small Time MCU Infinite Comic #1 Marvel Premiere #47-48 Ant-Man #1 Age of Ultron #10IA
Will read it tonight and hopefully learn what the fuss is about, and why Ant-Man gets his own film and Wasp doesn't.

I suspect it's because The Wasp has been chronically mishandled after Stern wrote her turning her from an intelligent woman leading a team back into a brainless airhead! Byrne on West Coast Avengers was OK but after that ....

Well, that was a more satisying read than the AOE Prelude TPB. No mention of Wasp / Janet Van Dyne in any of the Marvel Cinematic Universe material contained within, sadly, but the first two parts are all about Hank Pym as the MCU's Ant-Man during the Cold War era. As usual with these collections, the oldest reprints are the best, but I was also pleasantly surprised by the amount of enjoyment I got out of the final two stories, particularly the AOU #10IA one in which Pym decides to be a superhero of many sizes including giant ant pals.
Offline for a few days now. So long, chums!
