Today is the first day for I don't know how long that I've not read any ASM in Essentials having completed volume 8 yesterday. Back on the FF with V4 now (5 and 6 to follow)
However I made a trip to the post office today to collect 2 volumes of the Essential Peter Parker Spectacular Spiderman that I got (cheap !) off eBay. I espy a familiar name in the dredits that guarentees their quality and look forward to sitting down to some Spidey Mantlotainment.
After the 3 FF volumes. And the 2 MTU. And possibly the MTIO.

Read the first three issues in Iron Man: Demon in a Bottle last night. Hmmm. It's not very good, is it? -Ralph Although, when I put my tosh sensors on full, I enjoyed it much, much more. I think I had been expecting something more 'serious', considering its reputation. The issue of Tony using his wits to escape Justin Hammer's compound without the aid of his armour was tops. -Ralph

Iron Man: Doomquest was tops fun, from back when Tony Stark was a hero rather than the fascist of today. Iron Man battles Doctor Doom in the past and future of Camelot. Solid, fun, superheroics. Doom is particularly well done, with lots of humour. If you only buy one Iron Man collection, buy this one.

Has this got Iron Man 150 in it ?

Post by The Doctor on May 7, 2008 20:12:45 GMT
Yeah, it's #149-150, #249-250.
#150 and #250 are double sized issues.

Batman: The Killing Joke Deluxe edition
Own it. The best and never to be surpassed Batman and Joker story, perfectly sums up their rivalry and gives it the best ending ever. Along with endless speculation as to whether or not Batman kills the Joker at the end of it. The art has been recoloured by Brian Bolland and it's gorgeous. There was nothing wrong with the way John Higgins coloured it - back in the day it was the best it could be but here with advances in colouring the book looks amazing. Also packaged is Bolland's last Batman strip (from Batman: Black and White).
Worth shelling out the greenbacks for.
Andy
Oh and for my money - he kills the Joker. He reached out and almost managed to connect with him but the Joker pulled away and returned to his normal patterns.

Never actually read that due to not being a huge fan of Alan Moore.

Amazon UK have marvel tpb listings through to the start of Nov up. Light month for me the only new title I want is the next Brubakier/Cap volume, though several trades solicited for September now have their discounts applied (Iron Fist, E ASM)

Ah. Already got the Simonson, not been buying Stan & Jack Thor, and never was a huge RR fan. Isn't it Mantlotainment though ?

It is! Of the highest order!
And you really should give Stan and Jack Thor a try. It's great fun.

Hmmm. We'll see.
Just got to the end of the Kirby run on FF. Artwork is sometimes stunning. Stories.... well some are good but I don't see it as being as great as many people do. For my money Stan was much better writing ASM than this.

FF is best enjoyed when viewed in historical context. It was very much a trailblazer compared to much of the US comics scene of the time. Inevitably, many of the stories are not as fresh as they were. Most have been mined repeatedly in other Marvel comics in the 40-odd years since.
I would say that Stan's writing/plotting was tighter and more focussed on Spidey but more creative and fun on FF.

I'm working my way through the first volume of Essential Fantastic Four at the moment, just about to start the first Super-Skrull story. It does strike me that so much of it lays the foundations for what we have come to expect in Superhero comics. It looks a little rough around the edges in places, and a little familiar, but that is because it is the well to which so many other writers have gone back to since.
There is a sense of unpolished creativity at work in some of these stories that make me willing to overlook the rather crass sexism also on display.
I'd take these over a lot of the DC stuff of the period to be honest.

I think that most Marvel stuff of that era urinates over DC's output of the time in terms of readability and creativity. Except for the DC stories on Planet Haney.

I've had some excitable texts today from Karl which would lead me to believe he has now experienced the joy of the first Super-Skrull story. -Ralph I have indeed now read the first Super Skrull story, and it is great. Superb tosh, with a classic alien invader of the period. Reminds me of how much of an arms race there has been in superhero comics over the years - after all, as the skrulls observe, the Thing can only lift a maximum of five tons (and at around the same time Spiderman was, I believe firmly in the two ton range). These days I'm not even sure that would qualify the thing as superhuman in most comics..... Karl

Somewhere at Mum's - I know where exactly it's in the Spiderman Winter special that prints the superb Spiderman/Doc Ock/Punisher annual - I've got a chart showing where spidey is in relation to other heroes. Must get a scan of it, is superb. Not seen it reprinted yet in Essentials

Finished FF v6 today. In one of those delightful moments I discover that the story I have in an old FF weekly issue at home is the first half of FF136. And now I've read how it ends !

The new Marvel Solicitations list Kraven's Last Hunt as getting a new TPB printing in August. Can't see it on Amazon UK, but good news if true as I want shot of my HB with the horribly recoloured art

Someone yell when it comes out .....
In other news I have secured all 3 vollumes of the Frank Miller Daredevil Visionaries for about £20. Always wanted to read these.
In yet more news I've spent the last few days ploughing through a number of Dredd case files that tumbled onto my doormat recently. *FINALLY* read all of the Starborn Thing and the Graveyard shift !

Daredevil Visionaries Frank Miller Book 1 has been read. Not too bad. These are the issues that Frank drew but didn't write. I'd read one before (166) reprinted in an issue of the UK Daredevils (don't ask me which one )

We're up in London for a week again - a wedding and a christening - so i've bought my Essential Defenders with me to read. The issue of Doctor Strange to start it off looks great - Gene Colan pencils and Tom Palmer inks.
