It was also cheaper (£13) for the whole series in one titanic giant volume. It hit the spot other than one printing error.

Shame it never came to proper release...

How much of all of that was in TFUK? Was it just the machine man series?

The subject of which Essentials I have that have been superseded by Epics came up recently (can't find the post) ASM 1-2 Avengers 1-3 have 69-76 in epic 4 Classic X-Men 1-2 Defenders 5-7 (? MTU 101, 111, 116) (138-139 in Floppy) FF 1-2 (Strange Tales annual 2) Iron Fist PMIF 1 (Could be 2 if my floppies of 90-99 in the loft) Silver Surfer v2 needs just 17 & 18, annual 1 in longboxes X-Men Essential 1, 11 In addition PBK X-Men Masterworks 1-2 are all in Epics and I have all of Essential 1-2 in colour. And I've all of Essential X-Factor 5 in colour too HOWEVER..... I don't feel I can get rid of trades where I have later volumes in the series. So most of those have to stay. Defenders could perhaps go but I'm not sure I've got all the MTU within that wasn't reprinted in in the Epics. Likewise Iron Fist, but that's b&w Byrne and look superb! Then there's a large number of Essentials that don't have Epics yet

I just finished reading the recent rerelease of Jack Kirby's run of 'New Gods,' it's pure action and Kirby-insanity, but it's a shame that it was cancelled (and then wrapped up rather strangely in two stories about ten years later) because you have a supporting cast that just drop off the map and while they've reprinted 'Mister Miracle', they've yet to do 'The Forever People' where I think Darkseid and his quest for the Anti-Life Equation was more focused. I wish they'd rerelease the Omnibus' which collected everything in a close to sequential order as they did a few years back (now sadly out of print), instead, we get the feel that we're reading just part of an epic saga with a bunch of chapters missing. I think Orion is one of my favourite DC Characters, truly a war between his own brutal warlike nature and his fight to protect his peaceful, idyllic homeland.
While Kirby's plotting and his art are at his most Kirby, the dialogue is really not his strong suit, while he can write the grandiose dialogue of Gods and Demi-Gods, the humans just come off really stilted and just 'there.'
This was a pick-up after DC finally released the first trade collecting Walter Simonson's run of Orion, now that manages to be a fantastic combination of the powerful stories of Gods and the Men caught, Simonson is probably one of the best artists ever to capture the insane scale of the Cosmologies of both DC and Marvel (and others, as his work with Michael Moorcock's Elric and the wider Eternal Champion Multiverse is also some of his best.)

But we didn't get the full story did we. We got some half baked lie of an ending that made you think you'd read the story... But we hadn't. This is the kind of thing that keeps me awake at night.

Picked up a few trades today.
The Complete Future Shocks V1 - about to start on this, I expect a mixed bag - but always loved a good Future Shock. Batman: White Knight - I remember the furore about the whole series, it's just another Elseworlds. A well drawn and relatively well written one/ Sin City: The Hard Goodbye - long since lost my first trade of this. Not re-read it yet, but Frank Miller bringing his a game and giving us noir comics after some years with them not really being a thing.

Read the first volume of Al Ewing's Immortal Hulk, courtesy of Comixology's Trade sale, after seeing it's praises sung in people's end of year stuff on Twitter. Yeah, it's certainly got something. Will be keeping an eye for future volumes.

When I was returning the Alien Costume saga trades to shelf, following our failed attempt to get Martin to read them, I realised that between them, the 2018 ASM Epic Venom and the forthcoming ASM Epic Assassin Nation means the Birth of Venom trade can go in the OUT pile.

The Spirit 75 Years HC.
An absolute joy to read. A masterclass in sequential storytelling, even saddled with the abhorrent portrayal of Ebony White.

The latest issue of Jack Kirby Collector is something very special: www.previewsworld.com/Catalog/MAY182059Kirby & Lee Stuf' Said! I'm only at the early 60s, but it's a great exploration into a couple of the people responsible for the Marvel Universe. Highly recommended if you like your comic history books [things like Marvel Comics The Untold Story by Sean Howe].
