Some praise needs to be sung of Essential Defenders 2. It's in this volume Steve Gerber shows up to write the title - see 100 Greatest Comic Runs and here - and boy is it good stuff. I cheered when the Headmen showed up. Wonderful art on GS Defenders 4 - 2 artists I don't like much Don Heck and Vince Colletta combine to draw something looking Byrneish. A superb bit of dialogue from the Hulk when confronted with the racist/white Supremacist Sons of the Serpent "Hulk is not white" leading to Hulk doing some smashing. And just when you think it can't get any better an accidental flick forward revealed an Elf with a Gun. How good is that ? Buy this book.

Half way through Essential Defenders 3 and the Gerber run has finished. My goodness, if I'd have read this a few months back it would have been high on my top ten list, it's superb stuff. Turns out it contains 2 of the earliest US comics I ever read reprinted in the UK. All the brain swapping stuff is nuts, and then the fawn..... Hulk's great written like a big child, Gerber writes Luke Cage better than nearly anyone I can think of. And what was he thinking when he came up with the elf with a gun concept ? We'll never know - unless Steve was interviewed on the subject - and at the point I've read to it isn't explained. You have to read this stuff. Essential Defenders 2 & 3 I love thee.

Ultimate Human: I don't give a toss about the Ultimate universe, but I rather enjoyed this. Ellis on top form and putting a bit more effort into it than the mandate of 'we would like a Hulk V Iron Man trade in time for the films coming out'. In and out in 4 issues, doesn't outstay it's welcome. Hell, it even makes the Leader interesting for the first time, well, ever. Splendid art from Cary Nord too.

In other news from Phil towers we retrieved a number of packages from the Post Office today. No CUTA action, just that they couldn't be bothered to take off the elastic band holding them together and sticking them through the door one by one while we were away ! Contianed within were the 2 remaining Daredevil Frank Miller Visionaries I needed and the New X-Men Grant Morrison omnibus number 1. Good news: The annual is it and it's correctly formatted.

SECRET WARS II! AT LAST!*
Now where the hell is my nice remastered HC of the original Secret Wars, hmmm? Come on, Marvel!

*Bet it's missing the ROM issue though.

I'm not sure it will be. Is Rom not in it ?

I speak of ROM #72 in which ROM himself does not actually appear.
Hang on.
Phil, you bring me joy! THAT MEANS IT COULD BE IN THE SECRET WARS II OMNIBUS!
*lies down*
In other news, currently making my way through Strontium Dog: Search/Destroy Agency Files Volume 1. Splendid stuff. Very rough and ready at this early stage but the glimmers of future greatness are there, and Wulf and the Gronk are tops.

I'm not sure it will be. Is Rom not in it ? That could have been worded better. "I'm not sure it won't be" is how it shoudl have started.

Far be it for me to criticise an item of Mantlotainment ....
But in MTIO V2 there's a series of issues where Ben comes to London. Artist has drawn a perfect Routemaster bus. And then drawn Ben and Alicia getting in the wroing side. Said art Monkey had obviously never been to the uk, done any research or thought about what he was drawing !

Finally got around to reading Mike Carey's X-Men stuff - didn't think much of Supernovas, Blinded by the Light was much better and quite enjoyed Messiah Complex. All seemed a bit more all out brawl violent than you normally get with X-Men, but everything still goes back to the status quo pretty much in the end.

I saw there was a HC of Virgin's Dan Dare series out. On checking the contents...it only has the first three issues. Oh, Virgin, you utter twats. How to fuck up a property in the collected editions market. It's sales tactics like that that ensure comics rarely sell beyond the comic shop ghetto.

If i was going to get an HC of it I want the whole bloody thing or at the very least more than three issues.

Yeah, I saw that last week too , but didn't get a chance to mention it with all the bonkersness I was going through. I picked it up off the shelf, decided that Virgin were taking the Michael and put it swiftly back. For a hard-cover collection you need a bit more than three issues I'm afraid. Otherwise you end up with a book where the covers are thicker than the contents near enough.

I read an issue in the first trade of 'The Immortal Iron Fist' in Waterstones. To my complete surprise, it was stonking stuff! Very atmospheric. I will happily put down some cash for the book at some more solvent point.

Nay. My reluctance to read Iron Fist comics that don't also feature Power Man has precluded me from doing this.

Hmmm. Well I'd have a think about getting Essential Iron Fist. Lots of early Byrne Claremont, and Power Man shows up at the end. Get this and Imortal Iron Fist V1 together at Amazon and get free postage.

Captain Kirk...I shall consider it.
Mainly because: A: Entertainment funds are very tight until I get a paying job. B: I have a very high pile of trades/books bought over the last 9 months or on loan that I haven't had time to read yet anyway!

Right ..... Finished the Essential Peter Parker volumes. Good enough stuff, in general nothing too special. #71 is a real stand out issue though
Captain America: Death of cap v1 arrived and that's rather good.
Not wild on the Byrne Hulk volume, though it's sent me scurrying away to eBay's back issues to plug the gaps between this and Peter David v1.

Yeah finished the Byrne Hulk Visionaries - not JBs best work. It's more concerned with Samson and Hulkbusters than Hulk, and the Hulk you get is virtually mindless and relegated to the background. You wonder where Byrne was going with it. But he moves the stuff about personality onto the plate and foreshadows the return of the Grey Hulk as well. My one small complaint (similar to one of the FF Visionaries) is that the ordering of the issue is a little odd, would have perhaps made more sense with the annual up front and then the regular issues.
Daredevil: Hell to Pay 2 arrived this morning - slipped under the radar that did and I had to order it from Play.
