Is Silver Surfer:Rebirth of Thanos worth getting? I've enjoyed Cosmic Jim's other work around the same time, and I have to admit to being curious about the events that led up to Infinity Gauntlet. -Nick

Think I'll go for it then! I've wanted a copy of Secret Wars for a while and the latter I can pass on to you as you have passed so many trades on to me. I wonder if they have the second volume of Thor Visionaries: Walt Simonson...
EDIT: Hmm... they've only got volume 4, although it says here that 2 is due a second print run in December. 4 will tide me over, I think.

Wot's going on with Amazon UK's pre-orders ? The Nov/Dec/Jan releases all have piddly (or no) discounts compared to what you usually get. I imagine the listings wil be updated. These are for products not officially solicted yet. The prices tend to get corrected nearer release. -Ralph

Essential Defenders 4 showed up today. Glad I didn't buy newer copies of the early X-Men and Wolverine Essentials to match the rest - they've changed the design of the covers. Still mostly black spine, coloured flash at the top, number at the bottom of the spine. Front cover very reminiscent of the very early 80s Marvel design with a banner over the top of the picture. this Ebay Auction has an example

Mini Marvels: Rock, Paper, Scissors. Funniest thing I have read in ages. I had most of the stories in other formats but I could not resist a collected edition and the Mini Marvels needs to be supported so Marvel commission more, damn it. One strip I had not read before, 'The Iron Avengers' (in which Iron Man makes his team-mates wear special armour he has designed for them) literally had me bent over in stitches on every page. The insanity is just ramped up from panel to panel. It's hilarious. In a small role is featured Elephant Steve - the mightiest Avenger of all. Worth buying for that strip alone.
Batman: The Killing Joke. One of those stories I'd read so much about that it felt like I'd read even though I hadn't. Much of the acclaim Alan Moore receives mystifies me. And don't get me started on the premise for Lost Girls. Yeah, Watchmen is a genuine classic (and if you create just one masterpiece then does it matter what else you do?) but most of his other stuff just leaves me cold so I approached this with caution. I was pleasantly surprised. The scripting is rather manipulative and nowhere near as clever as it thinks it is, but is well crafted for the page count and does the job fair enough. I suspect it may work better on re-reading though. What lifts it beyond the decent-but-average level is some genuinely stunning art from Brian Bolland. It's gorgeous and at last makes the Joker look genuinely terrifying. So, flawed, and it doesn't live up to its reputation, but worth a read. Worth it for the last page alone.

Forgot to say thanks to Andy for the loan.
Read Nick's copy of Silver Surfer: Rebirth of Thanos today. Perhaps not the finest Cosmic Jim Nonsense but a decent read nonetheless (no-one does Thanos better than Cosmic Jim) Except for the bit with the Impossible Man, due to my deep loathing for the character.

Glad you enjoyed it.
I had a read of The Return on Thanos, having read a handful of the issues before. It's nowhere near as good as his take on Thanos in the 70's or indeed from the Infinity Gauntlet onwards but I think a large part of that is him having to re-establish Thanos to a new generation of readers.
Great art from Ron Lim though.

Andy kindly passed on his copy of Fantastic Four: The End, which I read today. Hmmm. An Alan Davis written and drawn FF story is more or less a recipe for a comic created just for me. I found it strangely flat though. There's nothing wrong with it as such: it looks gorgeous and loads goes on but it doesn't feel like an FF story (far too many other characters squeeze the main foursome out somewhat) and it doesn't really work as a 'final farewell' for the FF. The Stan Lee/Jon Romita 'End' special hit that mark much better.
Still worth a read though. Just didn't hit my expectations, alas.

Ooops. Well spotted Andy. I appear to be having one of those days....
A quick repair job deployed and that should be it back mostly the way that it originally was. Apologies Phil.
Anyway, as I was intending to say:-
"For me it is the fact that I really like the writing, and I like the characters. They seem like genuinely flawed characters trying hard to be better, and almost inadvertantly answering the question of "If you had a year to try and do something for the world, would you have the courage to try".
It isn't going to be everyones cup of tea though - it is fairly off-kilter from where the rest of the Marvel universe sits tone and style wise, and it shows clear signs of being aborted earlier than planned which I think hurt it. File under "mileage may vary" I guess."

I am sorry that it happened, and if you feel aggrieved let me know and I will consider whether I should be speaking to Andy about standing down from Moderator status. Karl

One of those shots has singed my hair-do, I don't think it will ever be quite the same again. And now I am trapped on the run with a somewhat insubordinate little mini-bot. Ah well, nothing to do but sit down and tell him an untold story that happened during the middle of a previous issue I guess. Karl
