I'd take a Hot Rodimus reissue sans Star Convoy too.

Gasp. The madness of missing parts reissues goes back further than I had realised!!! Thus, the madness of the new Prime doesn't seem quite so mad now...

What other reissues could be 'improved' by leaving out most of the toy? -Ralph A Warrior doesn't need a head- -errr- I mean, I actually totally agree with you Doc'. It's cheap and silly and cheap. A cheap way of grabbing our nostaliagasmic cash for half the guff. Yes, there is something kinda oddly cool about the cab-only Prime reissue, but it really is just about taking our cash for half the effort.

It is ridiculous, half the toy is missing as Doc' says, but there is something about it that looks... I dunno... familiar, but different. Like having sex with your wife or girlfriend in a hotel room wearing a wig. Seriously, no one's ever done this? Make sure that the kids have DVDs, water, and plenty of snacks, rent a hotel room couple of towns over (ideally renting two rooms is best, but that's silly money...), arrive in separate cars (essential), check-in, go to the bar, pretend you don't know eachother, get chatting, back up to the room, and Bob's yer uncle, hasta lasagne. No one? Really? It's dead easy (wig optional).

I'm on the +ve side with this reissue! The cab / robot has plenty of play value in itself (the trailer by itself would be terrible), is the properly iconic part of it, and releasing it like this, cheaper, gives more people the chance to own that.
I also quite like having it in the traditional packaging for the car releases, it feels like some unexpected find from back in the day.

Trukk not caaaar!!
Whereas the Optimus module could survive without Roller or Combat Deck, they could not survive without him.

Is it possible the reissue does come with the trailer, it's just in subspace or teleported back to bsse or something... I dunno, Sunbow's got a lot to answer for.

Does anybody recall the ending of The Prestige (2006)?
Somewhere there is a mass grave of Optimus Prime trailers......

After twelve years of trailerless Optimi, I'm can't find myself to be particularly bothered by this.
What I am bothered by is the rumor that this guy will be the ridiculous amount of $50 by himself.

$50 is 40 quid. Same as Hot Rod was on Kapow. Sounds about right. Everything is expensive these days.

At the moment. Unlikely to be by the time this comes out. I'd be expecting it to be more like £50, perhaps a little under it we are lucky - but I can't see the pound being much less than the dollar. I'll be honest, even at the £40 I probably wouldn't spring for this even if I didn't already have a Convoy reissue for a whiles back. It feels like it is missing large chunks of the toy, and in many ways the parts that gave it the most play value in my eyes. The classic Optimus Prime without Combat Deck or Roller feels...rather incomplete. It kind of feels like selling Soundwave without a cassette, you are cutting out a lot of the interaction that makes that toy special. Karl

As older collectors, is it possible we're not the target market here? We would have got one of the many previous reissues with the trailer already.
I can see someone who's entered the fandom in the last 10 or so years being quite excited to pick up an original G1 Prime cab.

If it is $50, that's a bit of a bad price though for what it is. Maybe the packaging will turn into a cardboard trailer like the Transformers Jr Convoy

While I agree the price seems steep given this is just the cab, if that's in line with Hot Rod, then I'll put that aside for a moment, and say I do like that they're trying to make the reissue more affordable. Especially given I have to assume the market for these will be more limited than a brand new Seige figure or the like.
I do think he's a bit incomplete without the trailer, but like many, I've got the previous short-stack reissue, and the trailer happily lives in a box in the attic with all the other trailers. Fun to dig out now and then, but not something you'd keep on the shelves permanently (or at least, not with my limited space).
I am intrigued by the normal-sized smoke stacks. I'm guessing in the intervening years they've managed to swap out materials to make them more robust? Certainly makes me tempted to pick one of these up if they ever go on sale (alternatively I really should just buy a junker off ebay and swap out the stacks with my current Prime).
