What do I want from an Masterpiece Ultra Magnus? I want it to be IDW-accurate, that's what I want. Which would be so very awesome. And also so very never going to happen. Because, hey, IDW is not the G1 cartoon. Which, apparently, is the only incarnation of Transformers that matters. Ah well...

There's a whole line of IDW based Transformers in the Generations line. In the US, they even come with specially commissioned comics.

I am indeed aware of that. And have as many of the Legends as I've been able to get my hands on. However...
It's not enough!
I want a Masterpiece line based on the IDW-verse!
I want it *all* to be based on the IDW-verse!
...
Anyway.
But yeah, I was just being cynical. I do appreciate that Hasbro have put IDW-accurate versions of some of the toys out. It just seems that the Masterpiece line is quite beholden to the G1 cartoon. But I appreciate I can't have it all my way.
Doesn't stop me from wanting it all my way, mind. ;-)

Because Masterpiece is entirely 100% Takara driven, now. Hasbro may have a little say in terms of character (not much given that Star Saber is in the line up), but they don't seem to really care about the line at all. I think Grimlock would have had an updated dinosaur mode, or at least been toybased if they did have any say. And Takara is 100% behooven to the cartoon.
Which is what makes the attention paid to the details on G2 Sideswipe all the more amazing.

I think it's worthy of mention but MP-02 was Ultra Magnus and that was just a white repaint of MP-01 (to my knowledge). The silhouette at least shows that they're not just making that cop-out move again. But, to be honest, I can't see how they can scale him correctly without making him massive. Presumably the cab would have to be the same scale as MP-10 so if that's the case, they might as well use the MP-10 mould. 'Battle Armour' is quite fashionable at the moment too so by putting some interesting and intuitive designs into the trailer, they'll be pandering to that trend too. The silhouette thighs look quit narrow so i wouldn't be surprised if they curb the overall height by using the MP-10 thighs and having the trailer components snap-on to the lower leg. I'm going off on one but I'd be very surprised if it didn't take some tips from FP's City Commander...

I think the Marvel comics have a sort of mystique in Japan in the same way that Headmasters, Masterforce and Victory have in the west. G2 wasn't much of a thing in Japan and (I think) Takara only released some of the line at the time (the big tank Megatron mould, for example, didn't show up until Megastorm in Beast Wars Second). I stand by my assumption that G2 Sideswipe is to test the waters for a tank-style MP Megatron some time after Star Saber.

I always assumed that's exactly what we'd be getting, it somehow never occurred to me they might do otherwise! Back when MP10 was revealed one of the designers tweeted an image of one with bits of a chopped up G1 Magnus stuck to him which was taken to be an early concept mock-up.
It's exactly what I would want - pre-DW-fiction aside, as a kid a _huge_ part of the appeal to me of the Ultra Magnus toy was a white Optimus cab with a trailer that becomes armour. That just seemed very, very cool somehow. That said, the comic is my primary fiction so he'd largely be staying in armoured form.

The two most likely options have to be G1 type trailer armour or Titanium all in one transformation. I'm not sure there is a third option come to think of it. Either way I'm fine with. But from a financial sense I have always assumed trailer armour on MP 10 was the only realistic option. The add on trailer armour would have to be insanely complex before a brand new mould would be more profitable.
The trailer would essentially be three sections, 2 lower legs and the torso. but I dont think it would make it massive. The lower legs would end up longer but no more than RID or Cybertron Prime with their foot extensions. Most of the trailers mass would go to enclosing MP10 rather than adding to the overall height.
It's also possible that some modification would be made to MP10. The hips might get a joint/hinge to widen them and the thighs be able to extend a little further something like the Tracks Wheeljack modification.*
As long as they release a Powered Convoy version of it.
*edit, it could even just be a flip around panel so that the thigh is a different colour in combined mode.

Right. Pretty much what FP's City Commander does for classics magnus. He's not drastically larger in super mode than classics prime.

That's a great sketch, Andy! Having spent the evening thinking about it, I really do feel a 6" Titanium type transformation will give a better Magnus though. But they're going to want to reused the MP10 mold, aren't they? Which on the one hand is obviously more like the G1 toy, but as I say, I feel an integrated cab transformation would give us a better looking robot. Time will tell! Hope we get some pics soon.

I sold my MP-02 and I'm assuming this is going to be Armour on something similar to MP-10. Its really what you would expect.

It's an all-in-one transformation with a removable head revealing a 'Convoy-esque' head beneath in homage to the G1 toy.

Yawn. I like Ultra Magnus, but no - this isn't for me. Wake me up when MP Star Saber is up for preorder.

"My duly appointed enforcer of the Tyrest Accord has no nose." "How does he smell?" "Expensive."
I like the look of this, for the most part. Although looking at the trailer armour I am having painful flashbacks to Fire Convoy. I'm hoping that the "super mode" is a little bit more stable than that one...

Oooooooooooooooh... According to the discussion thread on TFW2005, the cab does *not* transform into an all-white version of Optimus Prime. I can't decide if this is a good thing or a bad thing...
On the plus side, I am very interested to see what an integrated cab and trailer transformation will look like. And that should hopefully solve my above stability concerns.
On the other hand, that white Optimus Prime was one of the things I liked about the original Magnus. Which this isn't. And also means that it really won't be IDW-accurate. Which is a shame.
Guess I'll have to hope for an IDW-accurate Magnus from the Generations line. Guess I'll be hoping for quite some time...

I wrote somewhere that I wanted my Masterpieces to do everything my original toys did as well as looking more like the animation models so right off the bat this reveal isn't thrilling me, but there are pro as well as cons.
Pros: -A whole new mould to play with -Robot mode may be better articulated/proportioned -Appears it might be cheaper than expected
Cons: -A big chunk of the play value just went bye bye -Can't put Optimus in Magnus armour -Can't have Magnus tow Primes trailer -Cant have little ultra Magnus stood next to his trailer while Silverbolt sits on it.

But then there's this, that suggests that he *does* also transform into a small, white version of Optimus Prime. Except when he doesnt.

We need more pictures! And some decent translations! Until we get them I'll be sitting here in impatient, impotent, entitled confusion...

Just wait and see until we get some nice clear officially released photos. Better than speculating and getting all wound up by what he may or may not do, when we have very little information.
From what I have seen, he does look very nice.

That frankly makes more sense to me as Takara have been pretty true to the original toys, but still isn't a totally clear explanation of what it does. Though it sounds as if its either a new white cab transformer mould or theres some heavy remoulding gone on.

Post by Toph on Apr 22, 2014 19:43:39 GMT
Here's how I interpret that bit of poor translation.
-The cab and trailer are separate pieces.
-Cab IS NOT a repaint of second mp prime. It is a mostly new mold that recycles some mp op parts.
-"Integrated Transformation" is really hard to make sense of because it implies one piece, like the titanium? But you cant have separate cab robot mode and call it fully integrated, otherwise g1 um and powermaster op are fully integrated. So... It combines in cab mode, instead of robot mode?
