Thats something thats been bothering me eve since I got most of my MP autobots on the same shelf. The cars look tiny in comparison to Prime, Rodimus, Grimlock, the jets and Soundwave. It might be cartoon accurate. It's probably pretty close to the original toy scale too, but it doesnt work so well here.
Or maybe the comics have had a bigger influence on my views on scale than I realised.

Mmmm. That possible kibble on the back concerns me. Need pictures from that angle.
I am amused to see that Magnus comes with the option of a 'Special Moment' facial expression.

What is that Unicron thing??? It's a riotously expensive, 2ft tall Unicron head. You can put it on your dressing table and brush its hair, or something. -Nick

Not his most flattering pose, but it's nice to finally see him in colour.

Hmmmmm. Hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm.
I'm not sure about UM. Jury is still out for this handsome young Transforners collector. I may go either way. He doesn't look a bad figure, I'm just not sure yet if I'm gonna need him in my collection or not.

I'm not as excited about Magnus as I expected to be, it must be said. It might be the lack of inner robot that's breaking it for me. I don't know.
That said, I wasn't too excited about MP G2 Sideswipe, but isn't he just *gorgeous*? I suspect I may end up feeling the same way about Magnus. But, as I usually do, I think I'll be waiting for the Hasbro version of this one. Unless Kapow do another crazy sale...

Now I like the fact he has, what I call, an integrated cab transformation. That's a selling point for me. White Prime has never done anything for me. I'd never display him as white Prime, I certainly didn't as a child with my G1 Magnus. An integrated cab only means, I hope, a quicker transformation from truck into his 'true' robot form.

I have to say that this is one of the few recent Masterpiece toys which has strongly appealed to me (him and G2 Sideswipe). My current circumstances mean that I won't be ponying up the cash for him, but if I was in a position to I would be strongly tempted. I find that the lack of a "cab" robot does not really feel like a lack - like Shockprowl I have never really thought of Ultra Magnus as having any form other than the large chunky one - possibly because there was no hint of anything else in the Marvel Comic, and for a lot of my expectations of some characters I default back to that.
(Of course, what the Masterpiece really needs is to be in Powered Convoy colours but that almost goes without saying).

Oh yeah, I completely understand what you're both saying, and in no fiction has Ultra Magnus ever been a white Optimus Prime. (What's that you say? Dreamwave did something along those lines? I'm not listening.) But I remember the original excitement from Christmas '86 when I wanted Ultra Magnus so badly that my parents bought me something else instead. (In fairness, I was a fickle and greedy child.) The thing that excited me about the toy back then was that it was an Optimus-alike that combined with his trailer. Amazing!
Of course, Powermaster Optimus Prime went and completely eclipsed that. But after receiving MP-10 for Christmas a couple of years back, and feeling the same excitement as when I opened the original Prime back in '85, I'd just like Magnus to be as similar as possible so I can recapture the original feeling. Of not having him.
Of course I'll get him anyway. But you know.

Those are much better pics of him. Looks like a good figure. Certainly 'Masterpiece' quality. I still can't decide if I need a MP Ultra Magnus in my collection though. I have a Magnus in my Classics collection (City Commander). Am I an '84er where MPs arr concerned? Am I?!?!

Still need to see what this thing looks like from behind as I can't understand why there seems so much hanging behind.

Well Star Saber has just answered the question of whether or not I get an Ultra Magnus. Unless the Hasbro releases comes with some more interesting additional features, this'll be a pass for me. Poor little badly served duly appointed enforcer of the Tyrest Accord...

Better views on these new images, but everytime you see new ones you spot extra things.
So it looks like the top of the cab now is lower back cover but how do the wheels get midway up his back? [guessing they are the back 2 wheels]

Lack of details and paint apps (e.g. on the back there are no tail-lights etc) and a slavish adherence to the original are damaging this figure.
It would be much better if the legs / arms on the trailer were integrated a little better to look more natural and realistic.

Agreed. "We've made it look just like the cartoon!" "What, you mean badly drawn, and coloured in the simplest and cheapest way possible?" "... Yes." "Good job."
That and the now pretty obvious lack of waist articulation (and the previously-mentioned release of Star Saber) have made this a "not buy" for me. Which is a shame. But there you go. Masterpieces have to be... well... masterful.
The only thing that's really keeping me interested in Magnus is that orgasmic death mask replacement face...

I don't like his rear in robot mode. He appears to have some kind of a bottom-flap going on.
He doesn't look terrible though. I'm not disapointed with him like I am with Bumblebee. But I'm far from blown away. He just does not look dynamic in robot mode. That and the fact I am uncertain if I actually need an Masterpiece Ultra Magnus in my Masterpiece collection, mean that I'm begining to pull away from the thought of buying this figure.
Prowl, Prime, Soundwave, all outstanding. Wheeljack looks INCREDIBLE.... but Bumblebee I don't like, and Magnus is not outstanding. Are the Masterpiece designers loosing their touch? What of the future and the possibility of much needed figures like a Ratchet/Ironhide, or a Megatron?

What of the future and the possibility of much needed figures like a Ratchet/Ironhide, or a Megatron? Is that breakpoint where the designers switched over again? or are Magnus and Bumblebee from the guy that did the other cars? I like Magnus, but the colours are pretty garish. Can't fault it for G1 accuracy though. Tee hee 'bottom flap'. I like it. "I say!" exclaimed Shockprowl as he peered at the image on his screen closely through a magnifying glass, "This chap appears to have some sort of bottom flap going on!"
