Apparently some new early concept art, mostly of what would have been pre-Metroplex, has surfaced via Twitter:

I do like the Metroplex concepts that make him look like an actual city, with car wash, garage, etc.
Haven't seen anyone mention anything about their veracity; I understood from Twitter that the not-pre-Metroplex ones mention Diaclone, and someone pointed out that the other two look similar and one has an Autobot symbol so must be from later.

I like the way the Metroplex is evocative of toy car garage playsets. It's quite logical to approach it that way. Big too, if the ramps are car robot size as opposed to minibot size.

Folk online have an annoying habit of sharing information without crediting the source or even caring where stuff comes from. These look very interesting but I can't tell if they're designs from Takara back in the day or some interesting drawings someone made last week. The Metroplex ones seem vaguely familiar. I'll have to dig out my Generations books! -Ralph

The Metroplex ones aren't something I' recall seening before, but they remind me a lot of some of the early passes at the Diaclone Battle Convoy shown in one of the annual Generations books Stylistically the humanoid mode one has some features which remind me of the work of Kazutaka Miataka, who was one of the Diaclone concept designers.

Alrighty then. Let's see what we can get from these: "Good people can be interested in image laugh "organized in" the TF series but there is demand? And, out of curiosity. I know good people? Products in large-sized TF image laugh maybe hit first. Concept how to express in design? Many sketches are suggested time to look. ↓ " "Hide Robo-as much as possible to accentuate the surprise deformation of buildings at the outset and says it will keep the volume demand and cool, then is totally different form several designers over the trial, became a product came out running lanes with design, but one thing do? Derived? Throughout the trial and error? Forgot " "I took the photo of another series just 4 rechargeable batteries in the "rechargeable" wherein the same concept ヽ(= be ▽'=)ノ " "Help us complement the obscure part of my memory or don't understand information because "arrangement in article" Wools of robot toys, transformers, and vinyl fans will follow us like m(_ _)m for example, commercialized was two?" "Holds the TF carry deform, expand, play as a base. And what was the concept. The first convoy type 2枚目 the emblem motif. Do you commercialized it? Are you sure you weren't used? Commercialization of other designs in the same concept? It is not know." Well. That clears that up.

Slightly concerned that going by the city picture with the batteries, Metroplex may well have had a bush between his legs in robot mode had that come to pass.

A couple of more recent tweets from that account mention LD-BOX [and show a mountain base playset with AUNTIE?]
LD-BOX could be Laser Disc box, the booklets of which contained some design art. Have to ask paulwright, he owns some of the LD sets.

I would move mountains to get a mountain playset. Mind you I do have the SDCC one.
Auntie is an interesting association. That would date these to after Marvel's involvement wouldn't it?
