So TF Ex Optimus Prime just got dispatched... I ordered this as the Dragon mode looks utterly bonkers. So I got to thinking, what other bizarre TFs have there been?
To get you started...
TF Prime Unicron - Alt mode is a face with a mess around it.
The Capbots and Nike shoes are pretty out there, but I'm kinda thinking mainline figures.

I think pretender shells semi count, as Stranglehold looks like either Sean Connery in Zardoz, or Burt Reynolds after becoming a pro wrestler.
Douldheader looks vaguely like a two-headed Mitt Romney.
But for actual alt modes, gonna have to think about it.

What's wrong with Strongarm? If this is a colour thing then much of Universe fits, really.
Meanwhile.... Beast Wars Mutants. Transforming from one animal to another isn't all that bad in itself, I suppose, but combined with the concealed robot head, that's bonkers.
And then there's Cybertron Unicron, just because Unicron is in no way supposed to be a tank. (Even though it is actually a nice toy.)

Likewise, i find nothing wrong or garish about strongarm. Actually find it better than his original deco.
I think colors should be ruled out, as half the franchise then becomes open game, reigned over by AMTC.

Also, Skybyte. While a cyborg white shark isnt that weird in the line, the way he was often used in fiction (swimming through pavement, swimming through the sky) combined with his character... It's just pure animated joy.
There's also RiD Megatron/CR Gigatron/Galvatron. A hand. A giant flying, disembodied hand. While it has mythological relevance to the japanese, mad props to hasbro figuring out a way to explain it to western audiences. A lot of his modes were nutty, too.
And any nebulon out of context. A human Transforming into a head, or an engine block, or even a gun is a really weird concept.

BWII Galvatron is glorious! It's a giant lavendar dragon of doom with cyclone cannons in it knees that turns into a very angry robot with hand-axes and a drill tank that looks a bit like a sex aid! What's weird about that?
Beast Machines Night Viper is pretty weird. Not the weirdest, but worth mentioning on a weird list.

I always found it strange he was never released in the West, it's a great mold, though I imagine it fell into a weird price point that didnt' fit what Hasbro were doing at the time.
Didn't Botcon try and get the mold, but found out it wasn't usable anymore or something?

Galvatron did sort of get a western release: The Japanese version could be ordered through the Hasbro US online store.
I think the 3H Botcon wanted to repaint the CR Galvatron in Red as a BW Megatron thing but weren't able to.
Speaking of Beast Machines: BM Silverbolt's toy is all kinds of odd.

I was JUST thinking about him in regards to this list, too!
Was going through TFU.info, looking so see if any of my "homeless" figures are a reasonable match to pose as various pre-beast wars.
Add to this list, BH Knockout. Croc/sportscar fuzor. Pretty crazy in a fun way, and I almost never use the word "fun" in regards to TFP.
FYI to bw fans, the only way he could be more perfect as a prebeast Drancron, is if his translucents were orange. He is dead on, even down to color layout in robot mode.

OMG, Injector's robot mode!! THAT FACE. I was avoiding Fuzors as just the concept is ridiculous, but that is something else.
Megabolt Megatron - if they retro fit the design into the show, then yes it's barmy. If the show came first - makes sense in context.
