Split from Top 5 Toys Week 43: Scramble City CombinersAnd a third: 5 Scramble City repaints they should have made 4) Decepticon Superion/Aerialbots The Decepticons are planes! They should have got the plane combiner! It wasn't until the Sixwing repaint that we got a Decepticon plane combiner. For a GI Joe version how about Sky Patrol Aerialbots with silver chrome vehicle modes? 3) Autobot Menasor/Stunticons Similarly the Autobots are cars. It would be nice to see this one done with the cars in the colours of the Autobots they resemble YES YES AND YES AGAIN!!!!!!!!!! These would have been seriously awesome. We share this dream, Big Phil. Although I'd not given much thought to an all Autobot Stunticon team. I'd always swapped out Blades for a sports car (as Wheeljack) in an Autobot Protectobots team. But all Autobot Stunticons is a brilliant idea! I'd mud-wrestle my mother for Decepticon set of Aerialbots, with a Megatron-like Onslaught ande a Soundwave-like Brawl in there. |

Ok, Big Phil, my 'perfect' Scramble City teams.
AUTOBOTS:
Hotspot OR Motor Master as Optimus. You've really got me thinking here Phil, I can't decided which. I'd always thought Hotspot, never even considered Motor Master before (D'oh!). You've turned my world upside down Big Phil!
Prowl-Streetwise, Ratchet-First Aid, Groove or a Stunticon as Jazz (probably prefer a Stunticon), and a Stunticon as Wheeljack. I do feel the 'perfect' set is missing an Ironhide though (maybe a repainted First Aid could form a back-pack or something!).
DECEPTICONS:
Onslaught as Megatron. Brawl or Vortex as Soundwave (really can't decided which I'd prefer as Soundwave). And three repainted Air Raids as the Strike Planes (the thought of three repainted Air Raids gives me trouser problems). And I'd love it if Soundwave could eject a little Laserbeak.
Just imagine it......

Phil, for scale reasons, I think I'm going to stick with Hotspot as Optimus. The vehicle mode is better scaled with the other vehicles, particularly the Onslaught-Megatron.
But who as Soundwave? WHO?!

You proceed from a false assumption, and I think we discussed this the last time the subject came up.
Onslaught is Soundwave. just look at the head! The Combaticons are four of his cassettes. Send one of the fliers over to join Megatron and the Strike Planes in the Aerialcons.

I must step in here. If we can repaint as we see fit, it has to be:
Motormaster = Optimus Prime (blue head with bottom half of face grey, red chest plate)
Prime must be Motormaster. He has the Combat Deck trailer opening up with scout car! And Optimus Prime is not a fire engine!
Breakdown = Sideswipe
Dead End = Bluestreak
Drag Strip = Mirage
First Aid = Ratchet
Lightspeed = Jazz
Streetwise = Prowl
Swindle = Hound
Wildrider = Sunstreaker
(Hotspot = Inferno)
That makes two complete teams of five.
Scattershot = Megatron (he's a bit gun-like)
Air Raid is recoloured in three different ways as Starscream, Skywarp and Thundercracker.
Blot is recoloured twice as Frenzy and Rumble
Cutthroat is recoloured twice as Buzzsaw and Laserbeak
(Silverbolt = Jetfire possibly as a Decepticon)
(Blast Off = Astrotrain)
(Brawl = Blitzwing)

So if Onslaught is Soundwave it makes sense that the Combaticons are four of his Cassettes. So Silverbolt becomes Megatron and the Strike Planes are three of the Aerialcons then it makes sense that the fourth one is one of the flying cassettes and Laserbeak suggests itself. Rumble and Frenzy are probably the ground Combaticons and Rumble lends himself to Brawl so Frenzy becomes Swindle. Ravage's booster rockets lend him towards being Blast Off (not an ideal fit) so Buzzsaw becomes Vortex. Megatron is Silverbolt, Starscream gets the F15 mold of Air Raid recoloured. Laserbeak becomes Fireflight (they're both red) and since Skydive is the darker of the remaining jets he's what Skywarp becomes leaving Slingshot for Thundercracker So Silverbolt = MegatronAirraid = StarscreamFireflight = LaserbeakSkydive = SkywarpSlingshot = Thundercracker Onslaught = SoundwaveBlast-off = RavageBrawl = RumbleSwindle = FrenzyVortex = Buzzsaw |

And Optimus Prime is not a fire engine! I've always seen a fire engine as a really good fit for Optimus Prime's heroic character and since RID it's become a standard Prime vehicle mode. Plus look at the head and chest on Hotspot: they are screaming Optimus Prime!!!! Just swap the pale blue for Red, and black for Dark Blue and you're there. |

But 1984 Optimus Prime is not a fire engine! He's a flat-fronted articulated lorry! Plus combat deck and Roller! You're giving too much weight to the robot mode, Phil. Recolouring to resemble the original can hide a multitude of sins to make the robot mode look right.

Rollbar & Wideload are obvious from form and colour. Colour says Freeway is Gears. So you're down to which red car/robot gets to be Chase and which gets to be Searchlight. Chase is a Ferrari, Searchlight is a Ford RS200 rally car which doesn't really help sorting it out. In the end it comes down to this: Windcharger has an official white repaint so he gets to be the white Throttlebot Searchlight so Chase = CliffjumperFreeway = GearsGoldbug = BumblebeeRollbar = BrawnSearchlight = WindchargerWideload = Huffer |

I was having alot of trouble with Megatron from Silverbolt. But whilst on the 'ballet' run, I've come round to the idea. He's been a jet/flying vehicle a couple of times in different lines recently, and it makes him very dangerous. If Optimus can be a fire engine then Megatron can be a big jet!
Although Hotspot is my Prime, I do see the, perhaps wasted, opportunity to have Motor Master as Optimus. I quite liked him as Ironhide at first, but having thought about it more (again during the ballet run) I think Ironhide would suit a repainted First Aid far more.
So who else could Motor Master be?
What about..... Ultra Magnus?!
I'm also concerned we don't have a Shockwave, chaps. Scattershot?
I think the team leaders/combined mode bodies should be 'Leaders'. So Hotspot couldn't be Inferno. Optimus, Megatron, Magnus, Shockwave, Soundwave.... Grimlock?
