I picked up X-Men Forever #1 by Claremont and Grummet.
It's a little disjointed to be honest but an interesting enough start, glad to see that Fabian Cortez is dealt with in this issue, not an interesting character by any stretch. Wolverine refers to Cyclops as Scott a couple of times which was quite jarring, surely he'd be calling him "Cyke" or "Slim"? The sub-plots are pretty obvious given what we have seen from solicits and cover previews.
I'll give it a few issues and see how it pans out, after all we do have some Paul Smith art to look forward to.

They redid Issue 1 as well with new art. It's about a toy teddy bear that gets the ai meant for a special agent robot. A lot of fun.

Ex Machina 43 Mitch puts a costume on and goes heroing ! Woo ! CABLE #15 Please let it be over so X-Force can get on with being good DARK REIGN: YOUNG AVENGERS #2 I'd should have reread issue 1. How did I know they were going to reveal who the Executioner's Mum was ? That then throws open a whole new world cos if Princess Python's his Mum then his Dad (Step Dad ?) was the Stilt Man who was slain by the Punisher who's MO is so similar to the Executioners.... And he knows Kate. MIGHTY AVENGERS #26 MA & FF kiss and make up. Ahhhh ! X-MEN: LEGACY #225 We round off the Xavier story by dealing (peacefully) with the Acolytes ending with half of them going off to join the X-commune in San Fransisco. Which given the current size of the mutant population is sticking all your eggs in one basket. All we need is for some villain to try the Sheridan/Hicks solution * and it's game over for the Mutant race. * "Nuke them from orbit, it's the only way to be sure

I gave Batman and Robin #1 a whirl as a tester for when the trade comes out in 2013. Fuck me, what an exceedingly dull comic, right up until the end with one of the most horrible things I've ever read. DC Comics, get a fucking grip. It should have a 'Mature Readers' tag. Disgusting stuff for an all-ages title.
And thus I leave DC's superhero line alone again for another few years.

Seaguy: Slaves of Mickey Eye #3. And so the second wonderful and mad Seaguy tale ends, and the point of it becomes much clearer. Great stuff, and like the first series it only needs 3 issues to tell the story. There's mileage for one more story in Seaguy's world. I hope the wait is not too long this time!
X-Men Forever #1-2. How to make Ralph buy an X-Men comic: 1 - Make it accessable so I don't have to read 20 other books to follow it. 2 - Have it come out fortnightly, with the date of when the next issue comes out printed up the back. 3 - Design it from the cover onwards like a Marvel Comic fallen through time from the 80's. 4 - Make Wolverine a bad man who hates people rather than conspiracy bollocks. Repeat and rinse. Hurray.
Chew #1. Now, this is brilliant stuff. High concept: in a world where chicken is illegal and sold on the black market (like alochol in prohibition America), a detective solves crimes by eating things and getting pyschic impressions from them, ie from eating soup he finds out about murders (because the murderer spilled some blood in the soup). This sounds horrible, but it really isn't due to stylish and witty writing and art. It's the most distinctive and original first issue of a comic I have read in a long time. Can't recommend it highly enough. All must read!
The Unwritten #1-2. Bloke writes Harry Potter type books and bases the protagonist on his son, the vanishes. Later, strange things happen to the son. Was the writer really his father? Is he nothing more than a fictional character brought to life by magic? Is this a war in which stories are used as weapons? Very original, with great expressive art and an intriguing and literate script. Give it a go. #1 is oversized and only a dollar!
Props to the House to Astonish podcast (http://housetoastonish.podomatic.com/) which is where I heard about Chew and The Unwritten.

For those of you thinking about picking up Justice League: Cry for Justice, on the evidence of issue 1, don't. It is pretty much snapshots of various DC chars sitting about going "rargh JUSTICE!"
I have no idea what James Robinson is on. But whatever it is, its not much good.

ASTONISHING X-MEN #30 Load of rubbish. Like Forge will stay dead. At least he might come back from the dead in character. Ellis can't write X-Men.
DARK AVENGERS #6 Misleading cover - Marvel Boy doesn't feature. Sentry does some nasty stuff. Needs to be read before DA/UXM Utopia.
UNCANNY X-MEN #512 *Finally* a good Fracion issue of UXM, focusing on the Science Team time travelling to the early 1900's. Unfortunately the bits that were good felt like a Fraction iron Fist comic. Also needs to be read before DA/UXM Utopia.
DARK AVENGERS/UNCANNY X-MEN: UTOPIA which was a bit of a mess to be honest, Still Emma's finally gone bad again - and they've not even used the Trapdoor that Morrison left behind to do it.
NEW AVENGERS #54 DOCTOR VOODOO ! Oh yeah.
X-FACTOR #45 More fun and games as a connection is shown between the various strands of X-Factor's investigations. Monet misses out this time
X-FORCE #16 Oh thank the lord this crossover is over. Major blip on X-Force's form. Can we get on with the real stuff now ?
Batman & Robin 2 More Morrison Quitely goodness. Oh yeah.
UNCANNY X-MEN #513 And another good Fraction UXM. OK I'm a sucker for "putting the team together" issues. Didn't get the identity of Dark Xavier right (my money was on The Changeling) but I got the Mimic and Weapon Omega (how many of Alpha Flight are with the X-Men at the mo ? Jeffries and the Beaubier twins ? Omega's got it coming) Didn't predict who'd be helping them with their science stuff either but it's an obvious choice. This worked for me despite the repeated pages from Utopia. Nice to see the transmode virus thread from early X-Force's back again - though I'd like them to explain how Simon Trask fits in with Bolivar and Larry Track (I assume a relative ?)
I'm told Mr Stuffins 3 is out too !

Wednesday Comics #1: An admirable attempt at recreating newspaper style strips. Some of it works (Strange Adventures: mad and fun), some of it does not (Wonder Woman: pretentious wank). The format is fun, but generally I admire it more than like it. I'll give it another issue to see how the creators handle progressing the strips in that format but not sure I'm in for the full run.
DC being DC have ballsed up the attempt to reach new readers yet again though. For one thing, it's a weekly comic at $4. That's not going to have mass appeal. Secondly, when folded up and put on newsstands it does not stick out at all. No attempt has been made to have the 'cover' stand out from shelves to grab the reader's eye. I went to FP specifically to buy it and spent a full 5 minutes hunting on shelves for it. It just looks so bland.
Also, $4 for something on newsprint style paper? Eh, noooo. These should be cheap and chearful disposable comics. When my expensive comic gets tatty after one reading I am annoyed.
Oh, DC. Get a fucking grip. It's like the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.
The Unwritten #3: In which literary types discuss how horror works in literature. Far more interesting than it sounds!
Chew #2: Found a copy behind some Captain America comics! Retains the strong style and humour of #1. Contains an underling lamented that they only got one picture of the hero "before all the security cameras were deactivated by ninja throwing stars." Well worth a look if you can find a copy. Hopefully there will be a second print.
X-Men Forever #3: More retro 80's style tosh. Hurray. I do wonder if Claremont is poised to do his old 'mind control' standby though.

The thing is newsprint doesn't come much cheaper than standard paper for them these days apparently. Waid went on about it when he was talking about the positioning of Boom in the current market.

Oh, I know. But it feels much cheaper to consumers. Wednesday Comics feels cheap and disposable, but it's at a $4 price point. Doesn't really work for me. It feels too expensive for what it is.

Indeed. Having seen some of the upcoming covers my theory about what is going on there is definitely not in the ball-park of mind control.
I picked up #3 of X-Men Forever this week. (The only comic that I was vaguely interested in that I have seen anywhere so far). I am rather enjoying this series. It isn't big, it isn't clever but it fulfills the idea of comics as disposable entertainment quite effectively. A fair amount of stuff goes on in an issue and the plots move along very quickly. It is pure melodrama, but it doesn't pretend to be anything else. Not something I would want to be buying a trade of, better enjoyed as a regular slice of costumed melodrama (and pleasing it is nice and regular so far, rather than the irregularity that seems to plague the US comics industry of recent years).

Having finally gotten 2 and 3 I'm pretty sure it's not mind control. Really enjoying it. My thoughts on the Storm situation are in the spoiler tags. Storm is still trapped in her child form (she became adult again during X-Tinction Agenda) that she was in and kept in a cell. Wolverine sprung her before fake Storm killed him. Not sure who/what fake Storm is. Could be just another Genoshan Mutate or someone else entirely. Andy

No copies of Wednesday Comics #2 in either of Glasgow's comic shops yesterday. As it's very rare for a main title from one of the big two to sell out so quickly round here, I suspect either the heavy hand of speculators or Diamond UK cocking up. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

To be fair, this is probably retailers underordering rather than DC being mean and stopping people from selling comics.
