A commentary on the state of Marvel's publishing in this week's comic, It's actually so painfully true it is in fact quite tragic. Andy

2000AD dropped. I don't have the space for a weekly title. It's available online now so will switch to digital editions and catch-up when I (hopefully) pick up an iPad-like thing in the New Year.

It runs about 2 weeks behind in digital variants and can be had in CBR or PDF format.

Andy- what on Earth is a "Goldenroo"? A power-up for a character from Winnie-the-Pooh, I believe. Martin

Hmmm, even with discounts and dropping some titles comics are just eating up too much cash. Dropping Marvel US stuff when Fear Itself ends and Daredevil hits #6. I'll just wait and read material in the Panini editions. It's significantly cheaper that way.

Alpha Flight: Fear Itself 4: has just dropped through the letterbox. I'm not sure if I have the regular (Jiminez/D'Armata) or variant (Eaglesham, Hennesey & Oback) cover (mine's mainly red) but it's the most Byrnesque piece of work I've seen for years. Gorgeous.

Jumped right in and bought some COMIC BOOKS:
Action Comics #2: A decent, fun read. I'm glad they've realised that Action Comics should actually contain some action.
Swamp Thing #2: Wasn't sold on the first issue, and the second one confirms it. They're doing a similar thing to Animal Man, only not as interesting. At least to me. Dropped.
OMAC #2: First issue was daft fun, and the second issue continues that trend. I don't know how long they can keep me interested, but if they keep ratcheting up the insanity - good on them. OMACTIVATE.
Animal Man #2: Love the character, so I'm willing to overlook minor niggles. Still not 100% on the artwork - but there's definitely some great moments.
All Star Western #1: A great introduction to the character of Jonah Hex - some nice touches in the ol' Gotham for the fans, and plenty of rough-housing. A definite #2 pickup.

The Swamp Thing story is a bit too slow, and I agree it is too similar to Animal Man, which is doing it better.
OMAC is fun stuff. Didn't think I would enjoy a Dan DiDio written book, but he and Giffen are a good
Stormwatch I want to like, but it's just not working. It's trying to fit into the DCU as well as be similar to the Ellis era Stormwatch/Authority. Dropped.
Action Comics issue 2. Really enjoyed it, but GM rarely goes wrong in my eyes.
Justice League International actually enjoying this, fairly straight forward superheroics but it's pacy and the team is already assembled and embroiled in an adventure, unlike other DC team books with Justice in the title.
Shadow of the Bat -someone at DC has sense and we are getting the Alan Grant helmed Shadow of the Bat. I approve, now we need his Detective run and Batman.

Wolverine and the X-Men Issue 1
Well worth picking up, great sense of fun to it and the redesigned school is tops. The Danger Room is no longer confined to just a room, but can be used EVERYWHERE in the school.
There is also a Brood mutant student.

Think you will enjoy it Phil.
Feels like the X-titles might be getting back on track now.

Tank Girl: Carioca was purchased via Titan's app, purely on the strength of Mick McMahon artwork as I have always detested Tank Girl.
Art is as great as you would expect, story didn't rub me up as much as most previous Tank Girl stuff has.

I have heard this and a copy is winging it's way to Phil towers. I'll wait until Panini print it. X-Men comics are fine at 3 for £3 but otherwise no unless they hit Morrison quality again. I did, however, buy the 20th anniversary version of X-Men #1. I'm not sure why! -Ralph

Because it's the 20th annivcersary edition of X-Men 1?

Because it's modern colouring and I never like modern colouring on vintage comics. Hence why I was surprised when a copy turned up in the post. It must have been a vodka pre-order nostlagia purchase a few months ago.

...though it's by far the best 'modern colouring' job I have seen. Emulating the original style with some updates in methods rather than the usual method of burying everything under photoshop effects. Not better or worse, just different.

He has done a very good job. No other recolouring job I've seen of old comics has been anywhere near as good. Too many colourists forget how to work sensitively with art that wasn't designed to be coloured in the modern style.
Bit poor of Marvel not to give him a credit on the published comic though.

that is yes.
There have been some p!$$ poor modern recolours. The recent attempt at Iron Fist's first appearance springs to mind.
The worst is any trade print of Kraven's last hunt. Horrid.

S.H.I.E.L.D Infinity: Honestly, I had thought that the S.H.I.E.L.D series' little break was going to turn into a cancellation by stealth I've just got the trade with 1-6 in. apart from the special the Kaptain mentions are there any other issues out there?

Marvel Point One: Framing story, with some nice cod Dikto art, has two agents trying to steal something from the Watcher while he's "asleep" for 42 minutes. During that time we get peaks at the information he's been seeing. The Nova story is good, always nice to see Terrax and it wasn't as if we didn't know that the ******* was coming back. Encountering it with Nova first though..... Didn't think much of the Age of Apocalypse: X-Terminated story. 4 issue LS at best. Liked the Scarlet Spider, Loved the Dragonfire/Coldheart origin right up until the last awful 90s esque "You Avengers Need Our Help" panel. Doctor Strange was OK, and I'm not sure what to make of the Ultron one. Not a $5.99 comic book though, not coherent enough. The £2 I paid however..... but on poster elsewhere hit the nail on the head: This is the srt of thing Marvel should be producing for Free Comic Book day as a taster for their books and giving it away. Axel Alonso talks about it here

I'm not sure any comic has annoyed me as much as Avenging Spider-Man #1 has in a long time. Story - Moloids break into New York during the Maraton & kidnap Jonah - is OK. Art - well It's not X-Men era Joe Mad but it's far better than a lot of stuff I've seen recently.
7 page prologue including TWO double spalsh pages (one of which has insert panels) 4 of these pages don't feature Spider-Man or his co-star Red Hulk
2 page titles. 2 pages !!!!
11 pages of action, 2 of which haven't got SM/RH in it (ok you can see RH's foot in one panel). Two double splash pages with inset panels. 2 splash pages with inset panels.
4 pages of Jonah & the Moloids, leading to the big reveal on another splash page - no SM/RH.
HALF THE PAGES IN THE COMIC HAVEN'T GOT EITHER OF THE LEAD CHARACTERS ON IT! This is effectively Marvel Team Up, which the letters page cops to, and you don't see either of the lead characters for half the book???b?? There's something wrong there. And the amount of the book consumed by splash pages is just silly.
Really not happy with it.
