This thread just serves to remind me that if I had a time machine, in spite of all the wonderful things I could do, I'd largely be checking out toy shops 2-3 decades ago.

ISN'T the Mexican Hook the one with the chromed Devastator head cannon? Sort of, there was a run of the Mexican Hooks with a chromed head cannon and hand gun, but it wasn't the standard, plenty of them had normal colour weapons too.

From the G2 thread: tmukhub.proboards.com/post/203638/thread
The Chinese run (and it's other uses) was done c1990, possibly as late as 92 for the Mailaways Didn't the Dinobots get reissued as mailaways in Japan round about Battlestars/Operation Combination period? I know they did Superion and the Insecticons. -Nick I did not know the Dinobots were in Operation: Combination! This is a New Fact! -Ralph

I don't think they were in the storylines. They were just a pack-in promotion like Reflector in the US. My grey-import early 90s Rewind and Steeljaw came with a promotional leaflet for Reflector. I was gutted to find out I was 5 years too late to send it off. And on the wrong continent.

Now THAT is interesting.
The promotional leaflet would suggest yours was an Ameican grey import rather than the usual Chinese: the Chinese had no inserts/catalogues bar the instructions and stickers.

It was on the front of the card. I didn't take a picture of it before opening them because I was 11 and there was no internet -Nick

If the green Constructicons where in this set of China toys - then why did woolworths sell them for £7.50 when all the other toys where £4.99 - I think they wanted to pocket the cash.

I knew the Dinobots weren't in the Operation: Combination story line but to find out they were in the toy-line anyway is a new fact to me. The arse-end of Transformers in Japan prior to G2 fascinates me. It's one of the great areas of TF-dom that still remains maddeningly under-documented.

Replied to that thread with some cardbacks for you. Didn't realise you were interested in them.

Hadn't given it much thought till recently!
Was going to ask you for a pic of Hook's cardback just in case.
My memory is the vast majority of the Chinese stock is MBC imported

I got the full set of minibots from Woolies, though I never saw Cosmos so maybe not.
Bumblebee, Hubcap, Beachcomber and was there a fourth?
If you still need them I'll dig out the packaging.

Seaspray was the fourth. The Cosmos could've been my local Woolworths digging out old stock from somewhere, it has a different assortment number on it from the others.

Of course Seapray. Should be easy to remember, only 4 minibots I owned as a kid.

There's a correlation between Chinese TFs, Gold Box Classics - believed to be Chinese TFs reboxed - and G2 - which reuses many of the same moulds

Certainly a difference in production quality. I've got an original Dead End and a Gold Box Classic one and the difference in plastic quality is really noticeable when they're side by side.

Original is far better than the classic. The classic almost looks like a knock off in comparison.

You just need to look at the finer details. Mould fatigue for a start, but the classic feels cheaper.

Does anyone currently have an original and Gold Box version of a mould to cast further light on this matter?

I can try and see if the differences photograph if you like. I'll have to dig the toys out the loft.

I still have one of these Megatrons in the loft boxed amoungst others. It was an interesting time, although I've always thought that it never helped the G2 toys much.

highendtfs.com/?q=node/15I found this by chance today and found it very interesting. And it explains the appearance of Hubcap, Bumblebee, the Cassettes and Constructicons appearing in the likes of Jolly Giant and Woolworths. The URL for the article in the first post of this thread has changed: www.highendtfs.com/90sreissuesUpdate your bookmarks. Looks like the article has had an update and spruce up too
