The Kwannon thing was itself a retcon though wasn't it? It was originally Betsy's body made asian by the hand/mojo/siege perillous

Yes.
The Mojo/Spiral connection starts with the X-Men annual where she gets bionic eyes. She'd been blinded by Slaymaster in Captain Britain and had refused bionics as I recall. The eyes would then let Mojo spy on the X-Men. She has the bionics and when she goes through the Siege Perilous and that coupled with the Hand ends up with her being asian.
X-Men 17 has a purple haired psychic show up in a cameo, then X-Men 20 she appears at the mansion and a kerfuffle ensues. She only lasts another year before dying from the Legacy Virus. Then somehow comes back much later.

Didn't she get the eye in New Mutants Annual 2, her first Marvel US appearance? That then sort of leads into X-Men annual 10 which I think was what you're thinking of, and also has Mojo/Spiral in it as does the NM annual

If it's any consolation, it was pish at the time!
The original "Betsy has been changed by the Siege Perilous" explanation was far better, especially considering what it did to Rogue - separated her and Ms Marvel.

Been reading X-Men Epic Collection 19: Mutant Genesis and it's a rather odd trade. HUGE chunk of bonus material at the back: There's a Jim Lee poster from speakeasy which has an odd X-Men team configuration on it: were the teams in flux going forward or did they release specific mixed up images to muck with people's heads? There are others - definitely a Portacio one somewhere, and I think an odd X-Factor one too. There's also a fabulous Jim Lee tryptic poster set which I had hanging on my wall at University which I think depicts where they intended the team before they came up the merger with the X-Factor members: If that isn't in Volume 18 I will be VERY cross! It's in V 17 Dissolution & Rebirth :-)

Had all 3, plus the 275 poster an Art Adams X-Men and an Art Adams Wolverine, on my wall at University. Somewhere they're all rolled up together in a tube, possibly in Mum's loft.
I need to talk about that poster and the X-Men in relation to the the book but I need my head together to do it. I think it's possible to roughly date the image to c265 and what Claremont was intending to end up with but as we all know he didn't!

The Tryptich poster is a very interesting look at what might be and what Claremont was intending at this point - there's a similar one for New Mutants in Annual 6. Storm, Forge & "Polaris" Wolverine, Jubillee, Psylocke & Havok Rogue, Banshee, Colossus & Gateway That's quite a large X-Team. No Longshot. I get the feeling Claremont hadn't really got the hang of what to do with Longshot and probably only had him on the team to please Ann Nocenti, hence his disappearance first. No Dazzler either. Her appearance in 259/260 does kind of write her out though with the intention she'll do something different. No Gambit - so it's ether pre 266 or they weren't intending him to hang around for long. Forge, Banshee & Polaris, who looks to be in her "Powerhouse" phase - the word was used by one of the Reavers in reference to her, Marvel Age said she was getting a new code name so it's kind of stuck for me - are all in the updated original X-uniforms. Everyone else is in their normal Costumes. By the time the team get back together as a team, which is most of those here minus Polaris, Havok, Rogue & Gateway, everyone bar Storm wears the X-uniforms, which is lucky for Toy Biz as that sorts them for another Wolverine. There's a similar "what might be" picture with Strong Guy in an X-Uniform like these - do a search for Jim Lee X-Men poster and it'll pop up - which he never gets to wear. The team comes back together over Annual 14 and UXM 270-274 resulting in a line up of Storm, Wolverine, Psylocke, Jubilee, Forge, Banshee & Gambit. Of those in the poster Havok gets found, and left in the Genosha. Polaris spends ages locked up in Moira's basement and poor Gateway just gets forgotten about for a while - I think he turns up in Wolverine next where the Reavers storyline gets continued. Those three don't come back to the team for years after. Rogue's in the Savage Land but somehow later pops up on Muir Island. Colossus is left where he is till Claremont brings him back for the Muir Island story - see comments on his handling there in the Mutant Genesis Epic. So plans are evolving. Was this the linup that Claremont intended Post Muir Island before the X-Factor merger came up?

Continuing from my read of X-Men Epic Collection 17 Dissolution and Rebirth at tmukhub.proboards.com/post/382227/threadI mention UXM 268 & 9 there. 268 (late July 1990) is Wolverine, Psylocke & Jubilee teaming up with the Black Widow and a flashback to Wolverine in Maridpoor in WWII. 269 (August 1990) is Rogue - finally - against the Reavers, their last UXM appearance as they move onto Wolverine's solo title, then vs a separated Ms Marvel in a trip to the Savage Land which brings her into contact with Magneto. So I've had Fantastic Four Epic 20 Into the Time Stream off the shelf to read Days of Future PresentFantastic Four Annual 23 www.mikesamazingworld.com/mikes/features/comic.php?comicid=59926Writer: Walter Simonson Penciller: Jackson Guice Inker: Geof Isherwood Nowt wrong here, perfectly decent story and art. New Mutants Annual 6 www.mikesamazingworld.com/mikes/features/comic.php?comicid=51174Writer: Louise Simonson (Jones) Pencillers: Terry Shoemaker & Chris Wozniak Inker: Scott Williams, Allen Milgrom, Art Thibert & Harry Candelario Now I have in my mind that Rob Liefield was meant to be drawing this, and the number of artists involved would seemingly back up that it was a last minute rush job. We criticized Chris Wozniak in Excalibur Epic Collection 2 The Cross Time Caper and he's not good here either. It's a shame because the story is reasonable. Liefield misses the next month's New Mutants 92 too - 92 is trailed in 91 as being part of the Maridpoor story but isn't and looks like they threw out a stock issue and skipped what was planned for 92 cos 93 opens very suddenly mid scene with what looks like it would have been a great end of issue reveal for a planned 92. Can anyone recall if he was ill or anything? There's also some absence by Liefield in Xtinction Agenda that I'd like to know the story behind. A little fishing suggests this annual occurs between New Mutants 89 & 90, mainly thanks to Rictor's hairstyle! X-Factor Annual 5 www.mikesamazingworld.com/mikes/features/comic.php?comicid=61723Writer: Louise Simonson (Jones) Penciller: Jon Bogdanove Inker: Allen Milgrom Oh dear, the art is a bit of a train wreck here which is a shame. I recall Jon Bogdanove looking good on Power Pack and FF vs X-Men a few years earlier but I see an old friend of ours on inking duty here..... Milgrom also inks Bogdanove's Xtinction Agenda X-Factor issues and they look terrible: I'll be giving them both barrels shortly! The story in question is the fist meeting between Jean Gry and Rachel Summers so is an absolutely crucial one we'd been waiting years for and unfortunately it's all a bit meh, mainly thanks to the art. Uncanny X-Men Annual 14 www.mikesamazingworld.com/mikes/features/comic.php?comicid=50247Writer: Chris Claremont Penciller: Arthur Adams Inker: Dan Green Uncanny X-Men Annual 13 is a train wreck, with none of the usual suspects involved. Chris Claremont is back writing for this annual and, hallelujah, so is Art Adams drawing who so successfully drew annuals 9, 10 & 12. However he somehow feels a bit off his A game here, and I'm wondering if it's the pairing with Dan Green, who hasn't inked him before. The story feels it could be a bit better, Claremont's trying to tidy everything up and I'm not sure it quite works. But in the middle of it are two superb pages where Storm & Gambit, post UXM 267 arrive at the X-Mansion and are confronted by Cable, the New Mutants, Banshee & Forge. Finally two of the separate small groups of X-Men come together. The only problem here is this annual came out the same month as UXM 263, three months before Gambit's debut! Oooops! The insinuation here is Ahab is a future version of Cable, something that gets nixed pretty quick when it becomes clear who Stryfe is, but that fits nicely especially with the art insinuation in the New Mutants annual that the hound Rictor fights & kills is a future version of himself! So yeah, not the greatest set of annual, marred by some sub par art in the middle parts of the story. But by the end of it we have a team of X-Men again, which is picked up in UXM 270
