It should do. Is Lee/Kirby Thor in there? Or Simonson Thor? Both seminal runs.

"Sandman" in the number one slot? All I can say is that I am clearly widely at odds with the general taste - and couldn't be happier to be so- as I think Sandman is pretentious nonsense.

SANDMAN???!!!!! FUCK'S SAKE!
Also, the appeal of Claremont/Byrne X-Men continues to elude me to this day, Days of Future Past aside.

To a certain extent I agree. The problem with Byrne/Claremont is you know it's going to end with Phoenix dieing and despite it's laudedness the story has never really done anything for me.
That said....
My goodness it does look good. I'm a fan of Byrne's art and it's consistantly good in that "traditional marvel style but with more detail" way that Byrne has. The run introduces Guardian , Alpha Flight and Kitty Pryde plus the Hellfire Club. It's got *THE* best comic cover of all time in it 141
If you were asking me my fave Uncanny X-Men run of all time I'd go for Paul Smith's as this is the story I keep coming back to. I'm also fond of Jim lee's Uncanny issues - before he came on board the art had got bogged down and (as always) when teamed with a decent artist Claremont upped his game (was there ever a writer who was so dependant on his artists like this ?)
I'm pretty sure I nominated as my all time #1 run is the Morrison/Quitely New X-Men run. Purely on the strength of those first 3 issues which are complete dynamite.

when teamed with a decent artist Claremont upped his game (was there ever a writer who was so dependant on his artists like this ?) I'd be half-inclined to say Paul Levitz. The difference between different artist runs on "Legion of Superheroes" is quite distinct in my opinion. The Byrne /Claremont X-Men run is one of those things that I can understand folk not being so fond of. It isn't up to the standard of Claremont/Smith by a long way. I have a certain fondness for it which outstrips its actual value - one of those things that I encountered at a particular age I guess. Like the Marvel Godzilla or Neal Adams batman. Karl

I'm trying to remember what I voted for:
Claremont/Smith X-Men Stern Avengers Claremont Byrne X-Men Byrne FF Brubaker Cap Morrison X-Men Simonson Thor
all made it through to the top 100
Byrne Alpha Flight
Didn't
Can't rememeber the other 2 runs for the life of me ....
Oh hang on, I think I nominated Brubaker/Fraction Iron Fist.

Wow, I'm surprised at the strength of anti-Sandman feeling around here. The series is by far my favourite piece of graphic storytelling (not claiming to have a vast knowledge by any stretch), and it's also one of my favourite stories in any form. First read it while at uni: just picked it up at random from the local library not knowing anything about it and loved it.I'm currently re-reading it at the moment for about the fourth time, and still finding loads of new stuff about it to enjoy. The only volume I really have a problem with is World's End, which just drags a lot. I like the series' its pretension and it's hard not to be in love with Death.

I read the first two trades and while I thought the first one was okay, the second was pretty dull reading for me.
I've read worse comics but I struggle to see the spell it has over so many people.

A few things I love about Sandman: Lucifer locking hell, the characters, much of the art (particularly some of the layouts in the early volumes), Brutus and Glob, Gaiman's almost unparalleled skills of intertextual cross-pollination, the fact it makes me want to go away and learn things and think about things, the complex structure and above all else the mood, which is often sombre and introspective but with a dash of humour and moments of light - at times it's like the most beautifully melancholy piece of music.
