Afterdeath was great, one of my favourites as a kid.
I didn't get into the US comics until quite late - #76 was my first, bought from Forbidden Planet in Nottingham's Broadmarsh Centre. Of course it was a *massive* spoiler for something I didn't read until something like 8 months later, and I kind of regretted it from that point of view...

Did anyone else think that the UK 'return To Cybertron' arc was planned to replace both 'Afterdeath' & 'Gone But Not Forgotten' but decided against late at the last minute? They have a lot in common. Who knows - if they went ahead with it, we could have had an Optimus Prime clone retcon years later too!

Good! I'm not alone on this then. (Is there another thread somewhere that I missed covering it?)
Speculating here if not, I wonder what stories we could have had if the plan was to continue with the two leaders alive and on Cybertron in UK stories until the US strips brought them back.

Woah. That's a good thought. I've never thought about it like that. I've always assumed Furman was using similar ideas to draw out the moment and make it feel more significant because Afterdeath has no build up, but with the preceding UK stories as foreshadowing it feels bigger.

But the only thing that makes that feel odd is that the UK stuff was only to fill the cap between the US issues. Looking at covers dates for comics (so we don't know how many months in advance the comics where done by - if the UK stuff was done 2 months before printing?) UK #105 cover dated 21/3/87 while US on #26 Mar87. But we do have the issue comics being released ahead of the cover date.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #106Afterdeath, Part Two. In which the Protectobots gain the trust of the locals, who then help them to overcome the virtual Combaticons. Consequently discovering he has to face Optimus and Defensor alone, Megatron throttles a cheat code out of the real Vortex. This allows him to resurrect himself after dying, giving him the chance to send Prime over the edge of a chasm. Dangling by one arm, Prime pulls away a support which drops Megatron into the abyss, but also some Cloud Steppers. Back in reality Prime cannot accept that he allowed innocents to die, and claiming to be the true loser in the battle forces Ethan Zachary to press the kill switch that detonates his body. As Megatron leaves with the Hydrothermocline, Ethan writes the name 'Optimus Prime' on a diskette, and files it in a box. Elsewhere, Captain Rik enjoys another tedious space adventure, but thankfully after an absence of three weeks to make space for Action Force adverts, Grim Grams returns with the interesting revelation that Grimlock reckons himself to weigh around 75 tonnes. Also, an Australian Transformers fan club run by 'Wayne' gets a plug, with an offer of advice and assistance to any UK fans who might like to have a go at trying something similar.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #107Gone But Not Forgotten! - Part One. In which Megatron is feeling the absence of Optimus and crushes Brawl's face after he suggests the Autobot leader really is dead. While the US army hovers tentatively outside the Decepticon base looking for inroads to attack, Shockwave decides to capitalise on Megatron's irrationality and summons the Predacons from Cybertron to destroy him. Again. Elsewhere, Captain Rik's third thrilling adventure draws his short promotional tenure in the comic thankfully to a close; The Inhumanoids backup strip moves on to the second US issue with an all action spectacular as the Earth Corp try to defend San Francisco from the subterranean monsters, and Robo Capers explores forgotten robots of history.

This is a much better story than Afterdeath. Megatron being lost without Prime is clever and Furman having set up the insanity with the mind swap makes it better.
I don't get why Furman had the Predacons do the same routine a month earlier though. The hunter/prey idea isn't right for Autobots - you can't imagine Superion in that role, but why repeat it at all?

Captain Rick with a silent P - that's just a rework of an Ade Edmondson line.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #108Gone But Not Forgotten! - Part Two. In which more hasty editing retro-fits the narrative into the UK continuity as the Predacons have a (second) go at trying to tame Megatron. This time, with Shockwave's remote controlled help, they tear chunks out of the Decepticon leader, but fall foul of his fusion cannon. However, when Megatron learns of Shockwave's deception through the medium of a laser disc, he somehow gains a flashback to Ethan Zachary filing a similar disc away with Optimus Prime's personality stored on it. Then, in a fit of paranoid delusion, he apparently blows himself up by detonating the space bridge while standing on it. Elsewhere, Transformation brings news that the fifth Collected Comics volume is now on sale, covering the 'highly acclaimed' Decepticon Dam-Busters tale from issues 29-30. Also recently released is the second volume of the Complete Works, covering the third and fourth American issues. Transformers A-Z makes a rare appearance to detail 'Blue Streak' and Blitzwing, and Robo-Capers' Forgotten Robots of History series reaches Robin Hood.

Both of these were very exciting for young Ralph as they were the first time I got to read the stories within, which were previously the stuff of legend in the playground. I still have them though my CC #5 has seen better days from heavy use!

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #109Funeral for a Friend! - Part One. In which the assembled Autobots look on in silence as Ratchet tries and fails to resurrect the defeated Optimus Prime. Frustrated by his failure, the Autobots' chief medic chooses not to go with the others to Prime's funeral but instead in search of automobile parts he can use to repair other fallen comrades. Then, at A-1 Used Autoparts, he encounters the sinister Mechanic and is forced to stay disguised in ambulance mode while the boiler-suited villain uses him to escape the police. Elsewhere, Transformation admits it's behind the times bringing news that Rodimus and Wreck-Gar are now available in shops to buy; ambitious reader Philip Green of Reading tries to get a 'Best of 1986' awards off the ground by offering to collate responses for Grimlock; and Robo-Capers' 'Forgotten Robots of History' documents the moment Leonardo Da Pinchme invented the pop-up toaster.
